9-1-1 on the Rocks: 1x09 — “Trapped” Recap: Step Into the Mess

Everyone is trapped this week on 9-1-1: metaphorically, emotionally, and occasionally in a flooded elevator. Bobby gives Buck the advice that might quietly change the trajectory of his life: you can’t always pull someone out of the mess, sometimes you have to step inside with them. And Athena Grant is handcuffed to a bed, because Season 1 understood that television should be equal parts sad and horny.

This week we’re talking 1x09, “Trapped”:

🗑️ A garbage compactor, a flooded elevator, and a hoarder house that has apparently been designed by Jigsaw.

🔗 Athena’s extremely private 9-1-1 call, Hen proving herself the truest of besties, and one photograph that absolutely should have resurfaced at every birthday for the next nine years.

🎈 Buck planning the most aggressively romantic hot-air-balloon date imaginable, Abby being pulled back home by Patricia, and Buck learning that no amount of champagne and truffles can out-romance real life.

💔 Hen confronting Eva, the fallout from the full moon continuing to spread, and the painful reality that loving someone doesn’t necessarily mean you can break the cycle with them.

🌙 And Abby, Patricia, and an ending that turns the episode’s entire idea of being “trapped” on its head—because sometimes the thing holding you in place is also the thing that feels like home.

For all the literal traps this episode throws at us, the ones that matter most are the ones that nobody can rescue you from with a ladder or a Halligan: grief, guilt, family, love, and the lives we build around the people we just can’t quite let go of.

[00:00:00] Intro & Episode Overview

[00:00:00] Emily: And it's time to do this. Welcome back to 911 on the Rocks, a Fandom on the Rocks podcast. I'm Emily

[00:00:05] Mandy: I'm ready

[00:00:06] Alison: And I'm Allison.

[00:00:07] Emily: And this is season one, episode nine, "Trapped."

[00:00:10] Alison: ' Cause they're

[00:00:11] Emily: Every- 'cause they're trapped. Everybody's trapped. It's very thematic

[00:00:15] Mandy: They've definitely, yeah, they have discovered the, the format of the theme

[00:00:20] Emily: Yes

[00:00:21] Alison: them nine episodes, but they figured it out

[00:00:23] Emily: And they are leaning in. The first responders rush to save a homeless man crushed in a garbage truck, a mother and son in a crashed elevator, and extreme hoarders entombed in their house. This episode aired March 14th, 2018. They're trapped. There's really... it is exactly what's on the tin.

[00:00:41] Cold Open: Homeless Man in Garbage Truck

[00:00:41] Alison: I

[00:00:42] Emily: Yeah.

[00:00:42] Alison: love that this episode starts with a voiceover

[00:00:44] Emily: We do have a voiceover. Yes. Well, first Bruce Springsteen song "Trapped" is playing to really hammer home what's happening

[00:00:55] Alison: our poor guy is having the worst day

[00:00:58] Mandy: Not a good day[00:01:00]

[00:01:00] Alison: day is the life homeless folks in the US.

[00:01:04] Emily: Yeah, he,

[00:01:05] Alison: ugh

[00:01:05] Emily: it sucks. His, this gentleman is sleeping at a bus stop until a cop tells him to move along for some reason.

[00:01:11] Alison: For reasons

[00:01:12] Emily: And he takes his stuff and Abby's voiceover talks about like a test to see how much we can take and how you break the cycle. And he goes into a dumpster to spend the night. But in the morning, a dump truck comes along and as it does, picks up the dumpster and does not hear this gentleman screaming for help as it does what the dumpster does and dumps the trash the compactor thing. and then our guy calls for help

[00:01:43] Alison: I love that he actually gets a chance to call for help.

[00:01:46] Emily: Yes.

[00:01:46] Alison: that that's, like, a thing that they've given him as opposed to just completely saying, "Well, you're on your own. Sucks to be you." Like,

[00:01:52] Emily: Mm-hmm

[00:01:52] Emily: suck, and his circumstances do suck, and they are part of a cycle. They call out,

[00:01:57] Alison: I'm thrilled he's able to call for help

[00:01:59] Emily: They [00:02:00] mention, and I think for the first and only time, there's a lifeline program for the homeless, which gives them a connection to any family, and that's how he has a cellphone.

[00:02:10] Alison: Yeah

[00:02:10] Emily: this is

[00:02:11] Mandy: Okay. Yeah

[00:02:13] Emily: in the episode and then never brought up again despite Los Angeles and homelessness being issue in the city something that could be part of the show.

[00:02:22] Emily: I don't know. It's like, "Oh, here's this thing about the lifeline program, and we're never gonna mention it again." Kinda like Bobby's donor blood.

[00:02:30] Alison: Bobby's magic blood.

[00:02:32] Mandy: Oh, I'm still sad about that. That could've been such, like, a good, like, callback in future seasons

[00:02:37] Alison: It's a great callback in fic. The scholars

[00:02:39] Mandy: Yeah.

[00:02:40] Alison: go

[00:02:41] Mandy: Okay. Well, I do trust in them

[00:02:43] Emily: Yes, you have to leave your trust in the scholars because the show will frequently bring up kind of an interesting idea and then just watch it poof into the ether. You're like,

[00:02:51] Mandy: That's why it feels like a Ryan Murphy show

[00:02:54] Emily: Yeah, for

[00:02:56] Mandy: That hint of something good, and then the writers are just like, "What? [00:03:00] We did that?

[00:03:01] Emily: Bobby

[00:03:01] Mandy: have been us."

[00:03:02] Emily: Or not Bobby Athena, Bobby, Abby? Like,

[00:03:04] Mandy: Abby.

[00:03:04] Ship Names & Character Name Problems

[00:03:04] Emily: no.

[00:03:05] Mandy: yeah

[00:03:05] Alison: Ugh. There

[00:03:07] Emily: wait, but I wanted it

[00:03:08] Alison: there's an entire alternate universe that cracks off where it was, it was Bobby Abby.

[00:03:13] Emily: Mm-hmm.

[00:03:14] Alison: Although I don't know which would be better, 'cause I think at the end of the day both portmanteaus are babby.

[00:03:23] Mandy: Oh, yeah

[00:03:24] Alison: And it's

[00:03:25] Emily: Ah. It's a puppy

[00:03:25] Alison: I lo- like love it, but also I can't fuck with that portmanteau.

[00:03:28] Alison: We gotta come up with something else.

[00:03:29] Emily: yeah, I can't handle that.

[00:03:31] Mandy: I was trying to think what else it could be. Like Bubby, it doesn't really work either.

[00:03:34] Alison: that's worse.

[00:03:35] Mandy: That's worse. Yeah.

[00:03:37] Emily: No. Ah, ack

[00:03:40] Alison: Ack. No, we'd have to actually come up with a It would be, it would be like a First Call or like a, like a First Prince kind of

[00:03:48] Mandy: 嗯。

[00:03:49] Emily: sure. Yeah, yeah.

[00:03:50] Alison: a, like a Wolfstar. It would

[00:03:52] Emily: Yep.

[00:03:52] Alison: else

[00:03:53] Emily: Yep. Drop your ship name for your

[00:03:57] Alison: For Buck, for Buck and Abby, for Bobby and Abby, [00:04:00] and for Buck and Bobby and Abby.

[00:04:01] Emily: it in the comments.

[00:04:03] Mandy: Yeah. I think the real problem there is we need them to start naming characters with some different letters. Let's drop the Bs. We got enough Bs

[00:04:11] Emily: I need you to think about the... Well, you haven't met a bunch of the characters yet for this to become a problem. They

[00:04:16] Mandy: Oh

[00:04:17] Emily: of the characters end in I-E names

[00:04:20] Mandy: Oh

[00:04:20] Alison: end in E no- noises.

[00:04:23] Emily: In E noises. And, and you haven't met them yet, but they are Chimney and Abby and Maddie and, like they're all... Eddie and it- all of them. They all-- There's so many of them. Like who hurt Buckley? Who hurt Tim Minear? Like, does I... Why so many? I don't understand. It's just, I don't know what it means, but it bothers me And I don't have an end to that, but I don't like it.

[00:04:50] Alison: it's different, it's a different problem than the TK problem.

[00:04:52] Emily: True

[00:04:53] Alison: Which

[00:04:54] Mandy: the TK problem?

[00:04:55] Alison: now, but it won't mean as

[00:04:56] Mandy: Okay.

[00:04:56] Alison: It

[00:04:57] Mandy: We can wait then

[00:04:58] The 118 Responds: Wrong Truck & Hen's Mood

[00:04:58] Emily: Okay, so our, [00:05:00] truck problem. The 118 obviously show up because if they didn't, it wouldn't be a show. Buck is driving the fire truck again. I just can't care. I can't care.

[00:05:08] Alison: All caps. Buck, you can't drive the truck. Truck Truckley over here

[00:05:13] Emily: Truck Truck Lee over here is driving. and they pull up in front, but it's the wrong truck. Now why this happens, like why this is a plot point, I don't know. Like, do we have time for them to go to the wrong truck? It's 42 minutes of episode. Like, why is this

[00:05:26] Mandy: Yeah

[00:05:27] Alison: I

[00:05:27] Alison: Believe that there was like a cut scene in there somewhere that made this important

[00:05:31] Emily: Yeah, like why was this important that they, they flagged down the wrong dump truck? I don't under- anyway. But Athena's got the right truck, so... And they're very close by, so off they go. and Athena gets the, the driver to turn off the compactor before they kill this guy. good. Thank you. Hen is the first up the ladder to get into the garbage truck to start, like, finding this guy. And Buck has a line of like, "Damn, this stinks, and people call us [00:06:00] heroes?" Like, y- yes, we get it. We should care about our civil servants more. You're- you are correct. Hen is in a mood of whole life falling apart

[00:06:09] Alison: Yeah, 'cause the whole Eva of it all.

[00:06:13] Emily: Mm-hmm.

[00:06:14] Alison: I'm actually not gonna blame Eva here

[00:06:16] Emily: Hen

[00:06:17] Mandy: Yeah. This is the fallout of her bad decisions

[00:06:21] Emily: This is her karma.

[00:06:22] Alison: w- we're blaming the full moon.

[00:06:24] Emily: You're blaming the full moon, which is a little weird.

[00:06:27] Alison: But yeah, Hen's mad. Out of her way

[00:06:30] Emily: yep, out of her way

[00:06:32] Alison: I'm glad though she's able to funnel her, like, rage and shame into, like, chucking garbage bags

[00:06:37] Emily: Yeah, totally. And they get this man out alive and there's, you know, lines of like, "How did they survive that kind of pressure? How does anyone..." Thematic, how does anyone survive that kind of pressure? But he did, and hopefully he's

[00:06:53] Buck the Puppy Dog & Dog-Coding Debate

[00:06:53] Emily: okay.

[00:06:54] Alison: Yeah. And so there's a, there's a thing in fandom that I don't [00:07:00] mind that I think Emily hates, about, about Buck being dog-coded.

[00:07:05] Emily: Hate

[00:07:06] Mandy: Oh

[00:07:06] Alison: but I will say in this scene with his, like, little, like, pouty face, Buck is such an empathetic little puppy dog in this scene

[00:07:13] Emily: I can't articulate why I hate it, but I do

[00:07:17] Alison: Yeah, but I get both sides. I see why people see it, I see why people hate it. But in this particular scene with his, like, pouty lips and his, like, big wet eyes, I'm like, yeah, I get it. Okay

[00:07:28] Emily: make him a fucking werewolf. Like,

[00:07:30] Alison: a woo

[00:07:31] Emily: like, come on.

[00:07:32] Alison: episode

[00:07:33] Emily: Just go all in. What are we doing here? Like, come on. so that is our opening emergency, our cold open, we are off to the races with our themes of being trapped. And you know who else is trapped?

[00:07:46] Alison: Abby.

[00:07:46] Emily: Yeah.

[00:07:47] Abby, Carla & Patricia's Decline

[00:07:47] Mandy: Mm-hmm.

[00:07:48] Emily: we got Abby and Carla because Wonder Women

[00:07:52] Alison: I do miss them. I like them together

[00:07:55] Emily: I do

[00:07:55] Mandy: I like them a lot

[00:07:56] Emily: Yeah. And talking about, you know, Carla getting some extra [00:08:00] hours. The timing in this episode also irritates me because they still don't understand how firefighter shifts work, and I, I just... They never will. Not doing a modicum of research in a show like this. And I, I like watching, you know, TikToks of real EMTs watching these kinds of shows and just being like, "No, no, no, no.

[00:08:21] Emily: Wrong, no." But Abby is like, "We have a breakfast date planned, me and Buck," not her and Carla, that would be different,

[00:08:29] Alison: Eh.

[00:08:30] Emily: we both ha-

[00:08:31] Mandy: Yeah, I would be into it

[00:08:32] Emily: the graveyard shift." No. They work 24 hours. There's no graveyard shift for the firefighters. So, h- stop it It's just

[00:08:42] Firefighter Realism & Show Identity Crisis

[00:08:42] Emily: irritating

[00:08:43] Mandy: not like, serious question, like how much attention does the show put on having like actual firefighters like on set to verify anything or like script supervision?

[00:08:55] Emily: seems to be zero.

[00:08:56] Alison: Seems to be zero

[00:08:57] Mandy: Okay.

[00:08:58] Emily: I think they might be [00:09:00] wearing vaguely realistic, turnouts in later seasons. I think they have a vaguely realistic truck,

[00:09:08] Mandy: Okay

[00:09:09] Emily: but I couldn't tell you that the way they attack fires, like when they actually fight a

[00:09:13] Mandy: Yeah

[00:09:14] Emily: re- it doesn't... So much of the way they do emergencies and even like the, the traumas, I, I feel like in the scale of like "The Pit" and down

[00:09:27] Mandy: Mm-hmm.

[00:09:27] Emily: " Grey's Anatomy" and any other, like " Nurse Jackie" and other shows, I think you would put like "9-1-1" near the bottom of realism.

[00:09:39] Alison: is not known for its

[00:09:41] Mandy: Yeah.

[00:09:42] Emily: No.

[00:09:42] Mandy: So it's more on the "Grey's Anatomy" scale of how much do we wanna get this right? Okay.

[00:09:47] Emily: Yeah

[00:09:48] Mandy: I mean, as long as it owns that and is just like, "Look, we're not here to report..."

[00:09:52] Emily: It,

[00:09:52] Mandy: Oh, it doesn't?

[00:09:53] Emily: it

[00:09:53] Mandy: Okay.

[00:09:53] Emily: at all, no.

[00:09:55] Mandy: Okay

[00:09:55] Emily: Because Tim Minear will say shit like, "Well, this isn't a romance." So then you're like, "Well, then what is [00:10:00] it?" It's

[00:10:00] Alison: 'Cause it's

[00:10:00] Mandy: What is it?

[00:10:01] Alison: show.

[00:10:02] Emily: a firefighting show

[00:10:04] Alison: a fire in how many seasons?

[00:10:05] Emily: Yeah, there's not a lot of fires happening probably 'cause it's expensive and dangerous. then it's like, can't we get something right?

[00:10:13] Emily: Like famously these people have to work insane hours.

[00:10:18] Mandy: It's also kind of funny that he tries to say this isn't a romance show because this episode specifically seems like it's nothing of, like, it's about nothing but people's romances. Like, at various,

[00:10:30] Alison: that's what

[00:10:31] Mandy: points in development or, like, destruction, but still that's at the root of, like,

[00:10:35] Alison: it is.

[00:10:36] Mandy: pretty much the entire episode

[00:10:37] Emily: It, it's been a

[00:10:38] Mandy: season

[00:10:39] Emily: between the fans and the show of being like, what are, which show do you think you're making?"

[00:10:44] Alison: Yeah. 'Cause there's a, there's a big difference between the, like, the we're responding to fires and emergencies versus, you know, Athena and, you know, she's getting divorced from her husband and her kids are doing a thing, and then Bobby's guilt over the little [00:11:00] black

[00:11:00] Mandy: Mm-hmm.

[00:11:00] Alison: it's like, so are we doing, like, a show about people who just happen to be first

[00:11:05] Mandy: Yeah

[00:11:06] Alison: a show about firefighters? Are we making a show about Los Angeles?

[00:11:10] Emily: Mm-hmm.

[00:11:15] Alison: until, like, season four, they'll kinda

[00:11:17] Mandy: Okay

[00:11:18] Emily: Yeah

[00:11:19] Alison: where they get that blend really, really good. and then the balance starts to kinda tip off a little bit

[00:11:25] Mandy: Hmm. Yeah, I would say with what I have watched so far in this season, it seems like a show about the personal lives of first responders,

[00:11:34] Emily: Yeah.

[00:11:35] Mandy: and like not so much about the job as like the structure for them to tell the stories about the characters and not like the other way around.

[00:11:44] Emily: Yeah. And I think for... 'Cause I'm a weirdo, I'm like, I- "Tell me exactly what it means to be a firefighter." Which is I think why I like "The

[00:11:52] Mandy: Yeah.

[00:11:53] Emily: is

[00:11:53] Mandy: Yeah

[00:11:54] Emily: what that 24-hour shift looks like. 'Cause then you have days [00:12:00] off. You have like a weird 24 on, 24 off. Then you have like a 96 off, and like what is it like

[00:12:04] Mandy: Mm-hmm

[00:12:05] Emily: to have such a bizarre schedule when the rest of the world operates an eight-hour...

[00:12:10] Emily: Not the rest of the world, but like so many of your fa- friends and family are doing like an eight-hour workday, and then five, you know, five days a week,

[00:12:17] Mandy: Yeah

[00:12:18] Emily: what is it like to operate outside of that? I don't know. It's like, well, when you'll meet Eddie, there's a little bit of attention paid to do you have a kid

[00:12:30] Mandy: Mm-hmm.

[00:12:30] Emily: you-- how do you get childcare?

[00:12:32] Emily: How do you deal with school when you are 24 on, 24 off, 96 off? Like, how do you deal with that? But then it, like, magically disappears.

[00:12:41] Alison: Yeah. It's like, "And we figured it out, and it's

[00:12:43] Emily: we fixed it

[00:12:44] Alison: okay. then, like, over time we'll get more children, and then all of a sudden it becomes, You know, so one of the things that we'll ... That you're looking at with kind of Hen and Karen, is you've got, like, one partner emer- like, in the fire department,

[00:12:59] Emily: [00:13:00] Mm-hmm.

[00:13:00] Alison: and then you've got one partner who isn't. And so you've got somebody who's working a little more traditional schedule and someone who's not. but as the show kind of builds, all of a sudden you've got these responder pairings, what does that mean for your traditionally structured life? Like, if you've got kids but, you know, you're working 24 on and your partner's working a 12 but it starts at 2:00, like, still got kids who have to go to school.

[00:13:28] Alison: Like, how do you do it? And there's a lot of, there's a lot of wand-waving. There's

[00:13:32] Emily: Yeah.

[00:13:33] Alison: like, stuff just happens.

[00:13:35] Emily: When the drama in the relationship could be you're treating me like a stay-at-home parent and I'm not. acting like your job is better than mine. Your, you know, and that... No.

[00:13:46] Emily: But

[00:13:47] Emily: We'll get there. We have nine seasons

[00:13:48] Alison: Will

[00:13:49] Emily: of...

[00:13:49] Alison: Will we ever get there?

[00:13:51] Emily: You know, that's such a great existential question. Will, on the eve of 250th anniversary of this country, will we ever get [00:14:00] there? It's a great question.

[00:14:01] Alison: Great question.

[00:14:02] Emily: anyway, Abby and Carla.

[00:14:03] Alison: Abby and Carla being besties

[00:14:07] Emily: besties while Patricia is, the timeline of the show, very rapidly declining.

[00:14:12] Alison: Very rapidly. She is having a bad day

[00:14:14] Emily: She is having what the show refers to as an episode

[00:14:18] Mandy: yeah

[00:14:19] Emily: very Days of Our Lives. She's having an episode.

[00:14:21] Mandy: Yeah.

[00:14:22] Emily: Patricia wants Abby to stay home and not go to work, and then she slaps Abby across the face

[00:14:27] Alison: Poor thing

[00:14:28] Emily: Poor, yeah, it's really troubling and traumatic for Abby and everyone watching. But Abby wants to stay home, and Carla's like, "No, you need to go to work. You need to go do your date with Buck. Be young while you still can." And Abby is obviously feeling a lot of feelings about this. and it will be integral to the episode and the rest of the season. But first, Hen and Athena being besties

[00:14:51] Hen & Athena's Friendship at Carney's

[00:14:51] Alison: They're best

[00:14:52] Mandy: I love them so much. I want to keep them forever

[00:14:56] Emily: I know. I think this is the first and only time someone on this show [00:15:00] has eaten a hot dog. I'm not even joking. I think it's the first and only time we see people on this show eating hot dogs in Carney's Hot Dog Train. I Googled it. It's a real thing.

[00:15:10] Alison: Why

[00:15:10] Mandy: Nice

[00:15:11] Alison: there?

[00:15:11] Emily: don't know. Probably because, like, we had our other place to go to

[00:15:16] Alison: It's true, we had a lot of other places, but I think we all need to take a field trip back to Los Angeles just to eat at,

[00:15:21] Emily: I will...

[00:15:21] Alison: Hot Dog Train.

[00:15:22] Emily: Carney's Hot Dog Train. I will take a field trip back to Los Angeles, just not in the summer.

[00:15:27] Alison: No.

[00:15:28] Emily: if we go, we're getting Greek fries,

[00:15:30] Alison: Oh

[00:15:30] Emily: so.

[00:15:31] Alison: them so bad

[00:15:32] Emily: but yeah, I was like, I don't... I mean, we talk, there's a lot of fandom and a lot of fanfic about but I don't think anyone's eating hot dogs. I think that's not happening.

[00:15:40] Emily: Anyway, they're having their little chat about, you know, has Hen told Karen about her little misdemeanor. but she didn't have to because Karen, light of our lives, already knew, because of course she did

[00:15:54] Mandy: Yep

[00:15:55] Hen's Custody Battle & Queer Family Law

[00:15:55] Alison: Hen's over here having to fight the system because the system is [00:16:00] inherently built against her, as we'll discover and get reaffirmed over and over and over and over and over again.

[00:16:05] Emily: Yes.

[00:16:06] Alison: it's one of those, suing for custody, can she do that? It's like, well, she can. She shouldn't, and no judge worth their salt is going to pay attention to her.

[00:16:16] Alison: But

[00:16:16] Emily: But you can.

[00:16:18] Alison: We're two queer Black women having adopted a child that neither one of us is biologically attached to.

[00:16:25] Emily: Mm-hmm

[00:16:26] Alison: Like

[00:16:26] Mandy: I was trying to do the math in my head. So like, if this was 2018,

[00:16:31] Alison: Yeah.

[00:16:31] Mandy: so gay marriage had only been legal, like, nationally for like three years. I'm guessing there was a lot of, like, untested courts at that point, like,

[00:16:41] Emily: yeah.

[00:16:42] Mandy: like a lot of

[00:16:44] Emily: Yeah, my

[00:16:45] Mandy: there

[00:16:46] Emily: "What was the case law?"

[00:16:48] Mandy: Yeah

[00:16:49] Emily: yeah. Because Eva's the birth mom, but has a lot of issues. We don't know the dad yet.

[00:16:58] Alison: Yeah.

[00:16:58] Emily: don't really have a lot of [00:17:00] backstory, but she's trouble

[00:17:02] Alison: the birth mom and seemed to give up Denny, like immediately,

[00:17:06] Emily: Mm-hmm.

[00:17:06] Mandy: "I can't do this. I don't want it. You know, you take him." And Hen was like, "Done." Yeah

[00:17:13] Alison: there is, there's some like emotional stuff in there going, you know, he's been with me for his whole life, what are we gonna prioritize the child in? But also, you're completely right, there's a ton of untested courts, and someti- it really depends on the judge you get

[00:17:29] Mandy: Yeah

[00:17:30] Alison: how they're feeling at that particular moment in time.

[00:17:33] Emily: Mm-hmm. But also it's Glee, so like, who could say?

[00:17:37] Alison: But it's Glee. I like how that just applies to everything that

[00:17:41] Mandy: It was, yeah

[00:17:42] Emily: We have got to get like a shirt that just says, "But it's Glee."

[00:17:46] Mandy: I would buy that. Make some merch for us solely for us to buy.

[00:17:51] Alison: just

[00:17:51] Mandy: Yeah.

[00:17:52] Emily: and Hen, you know, Hen feels like shit, and thematically she wants to be covered in garbage and squished into nothing

[00:17:58] Alison: I mean, I've had that

[00:17:59] Mandy: Uhum.

[00:17:59] Alison: got

[00:17:59] Athena's Divorce & New Romance

[00:17:59] Mandy: [00:18:00] É, não

[00:18:00] Emily: but she's also like, "Hey, you know, are... about me. Are you getting a divorce?" Like, we're both in the shit storm together here. And Athena's like, "Yeah, you know, it's, it's the right thing to do." Which it is

[00:18:15] Alison: is, and it's so hard. I'm still so proud of Athena for doing this hard, shitty, awful thing. Like, I'm still thinking about it. It's like, I've gotta do this now while I still love you.

[00:18:26] Mandy: Yeah.

[00:18:27] Alison: just,

[00:18:28] Mandy: That was a good line

[00:18:29] Alison: hits me right in the heart place

[00:18:31] Emily: Now, it's not all bad news for Athena

[00:18:33] Alison: It is not.

[00:18:35] Emily: because she tells her bestie about the guy she met at the bar the other night.

[00:18:38] Alison: Get it, girl

[00:18:39] Emily: And Hen's like, "Athena Grant let a stranger pick her up and take her home?"

[00:18:45] Alison: She

[00:18:45] Mandy: And good for her.

[00:18:46] Alison: had a full background check run

[00:18:47] Mandy: Yeah

[00:18:48] Emily: It wasn't a stranger.

[00:18:49] Alison: Well, it's

[00:18:49] Emily: No.

[00:18:50] Alison: stranger.

[00:18:50] Emily: quite.

[00:18:51] Alison: his record pulled

[00:18:52] Emily: Yes. And I, my note here was like, this was when "9-1-1" was still horny

[00:18:57] Alison: Yes.

[00:18:57] Mandy: This was a very horny episode. I mean, also a [00:19:00] very, like, sad episode, but e- equal parts sad and horny

[00:19:03] Emily: Yes, the di-

[00:19:04] Alison: like all good fic, it's equal

[00:19:06] Mandy: Yeah.

[00:19:07] Emily: sad and horny.

[00:19:08] Mandy: All

[00:19:08] Emily: The dichotomy

[00:19:08] Emergency #2: Trapped in an Elevator

[00:19:08] Emily: of

[00:19:09] Mandy: right

[00:19:09] Emily: in the early seasons of sad and horny. Yep. we have to go more into the sad of our emergency number two, trapped in an elevator. We've got a mom and her, her son who... Okay, I needed the son to be older if the complaint

[00:19:25] Mandy: Yeah

[00:19:26] Emily: up, because he just turned 18

[00:19:29] Alison: Yeah, that's not enough time, guys.

[00:19:31] Emily: And so they're going to like, I th- an appointment somewhere and a therapy appointment, and they're getting into this elevator and she is complaining that he's 18, he has no job, he's not in school, and he hasn't figured out what he wants to do with his life.

[00:19:44] Emily: And the mom is like, "Who cares what you want?" And I was like, "He, he just graduated high

[00:19:50] Mandy: Yeah.

[00:19:51] Emily: It

[00:19:51] Alison: He dropped out of college after a semester. Like, broski, you've got to... this is, this is a little too harsh for my vibe

[00:19:59] Emily: Yeah, [00:20:00] this was a little too rough. Like, he needed to be 30 or 28 or something to then be giving him the like, right, let's work out what are your pass-" Like, something, not 18. And like, not quite right.

[00:20:17] Alison: Yeah, it, something about it just didn't quite...

[00:20:19] Emily: it was too soon. It was like, "Oh, here's your diploma. Now get the fuck out of my house."

[00:20:23] Alison: Yeah. 'Cause like at the end of the day, I was kind of on the kids' side about the whole thing.

[00:20:26] Emily: I was

[00:20:27] Mandy: Yeah

[00:20:27] Emily: kid's side. I was like, "Damn, Mom, he is fresh. He's like a baby."

[00:20:33] Alison: is, he, like, yes, he did in fact drop out of college after the first semester. Give him another semester. Let him go back in the fall.

[00:20:40] Emily: Yeah. Dropping out of school after a semester is premature. Like, you don't even know anything about college yet other than sometimes it sucks. But like, let's take a minute here. but they don't have a minute because the elevator plummets to the basement of this building.

[00:20:58] Alison: Rip.

[00:20:59] Emily: [00:21:00] Whoops. not gonna be our last elevator

[00:21:02] Alison: Nope.

[00:21:03] Emily: because why...

[00:21:04] Alison: last elevator.

[00:21:05] Emily: the last elevator. Todd, our child, calls 911 because his mother is unconscious. she is in a lot of things. She is like a character actor.

[00:21:14] Mandy: I've seen her a lot

[00:21:15] Emily: She, is on "Ghosts," the TV show "Ghosts," which I quite like a lot. her name is Rebecca Wisocky.

[00:21:23] Emily: Wisocky? Yeah. She's cool. so yes, the 911 arrives. Not only has the car plummeted, but it is now flooding

[00:21:32] Alison: reasons.

[00:21:33] Emily: because apparently this building should really be condemned

[00:21:36] Mandy: I was so confused by where all the water was actually coming from.

[00:21:40] Emily: So they're like, "Hey, this building is still operational even though the basement has

[00:21:45] Mandy: Yeah.

[00:21:46] Emily: repeatedly during whatever construction they're doing. and we haven't replaced the elevator cables yet. We were, like, gonna get to it, but we haven't." So oops, they've corroded.

[00:21:59] Alison: [00:22:00] Whoops

[00:22:00] Emily: So the 118's gonna have to come in from above with a little winch situation. And of course, they start, the mom and Todd start apologizing to each other because, you know, Todd i- we're here because of him, because he's been a piece of shit for six months? I don't know.

[00:22:19] Alison: A teenager.

[00:22:20] Emily: He's been a teenager?

[00:22:21] Mandy: He's been a teenager

[00:22:22] Emily: And the mom is like, "It's not you. Your dad left because he got bored and he had no responsibility, and I push you because I think you're like me, and I know you could be better."

[00:22:31] Emily: Like, he is 18 What?

[00:22:32] Alison: will be. You just have to let him, like, figure it out.

[00:22:37] Emily: You gotta let that kid breathe. Like, but Buck and Hen get to be big damn heroes

[00:22:42] Alison: Yay

[00:22:43] Emily: and rappel down to the elevator and bring the mom up, but then there's more water and it fills

[00:22:53] Alison: yeah, physics. Space physics.

[00:22:56] Emily: It's not nearly as, like, dramatic as I think they wanted it [00:23:00] to be because everyone gets out safe. but Buck gets to look very proud of himself for getting the kid out

[00:23:06] Alison: Is this Buck NDE number two?

[00:23:08] Emily: No. No, 'cause I, I think he...

[00:23:10] Alison: at bread.

[00:23:11] Emily: Just a bread. Yeah, I think this is just, like, dangerous situation.

[00:23:16] Alison: Mild work peril

[00:23:17] Emily: This was-- Yes, I think this was mild work peril that he was like, he'll tell someone about, at the bar about this after work and be like, "Yeah, we had a really cool rescue, and I was in the elevator and it was

[00:23:30] Alison: and I

[00:23:30] Emily: filling up with water."

[00:23:31] Alison: but I'm fine. Yeah

[00:23:32] Emily: Yeah, I don't think this was in, like, an actual danger zone situation. Like, he was kinda out of breath, you know? and the mom and the son make up because we could've trapped together full of anger and resentment for all time, but you gotta move out. You proved your... I was like, I, this is too... They tried too hard on this one

[00:23:51] Alison: did. And I, I know we'll get there at, like, the end of the episode. but she's, like, scooting him into an apartment for rent, and I'm like,

[00:23:58] Emily: With what money?

[00:23:59] Alison: mean [00:24:00] he's got an apartment without a job?

[00:24:01] Emily: Yeah, with what money?

[00:24:03] Alison: With what money, Mother?"

[00:24:04] Emily: Yeah. Where did you send

[00:24:06] Mandy: That's funny.

[00:24:06] Emily: to? With, like, a

[00:24:08] Mandy: Imagine he didn't even have,

[00:24:09] Emily: stuff

[00:24:10] Mandy: didn't even have an apartment. She was just like, "All right. Here, I'm dropping you off in front of the building. Here's a box of stuff

[00:24:16] Emily: It w- yeah, there wasn't actually one even rented, it

[00:24:18] Mandy: Yeah.

[00:24:19] Emily: rent sign and he just had, like, a box of shoes. Like, "Here you go. Goodbye."

[00:24:23] Alison: Here you go. It was, it w- the whole thing, this whole, like, little plot really didn't hit for me, but you know

[00:24:29] Emily: Did not.

[00:24:30] Mandy: Well, you know, okay, I, I read the Reddit for this episode 'cause it's my favorite thing to do after I watch it to see what the other people who had just seen it thought. and apparently they really pushed the elevator scene in commercials for this episode, so there were people that were let down by like, I thought this was like the big dramatic storyline of the episode,

[00:24:51] Emily: Yeah, totally.

[00:24:52] Mandy: and it was really not that dramatic, no

[00:24:55] Alison: was not

[00:24:56] Emily: It happened very quickly ' cause, they

[00:24:59] Mandy: [00:25:00] Yeah

[00:25:00] Emily: Yep. Oh, well.

[00:25:02] Athena & Aaron: Handcuffed to the Bed

[00:25:02] Alison: well.

[00:25:03] Emily: Can't win them all. Speaking of not being able to win them all,

[00:25:07] Alison: RIP

[00:25:08] Emily: Athena and her Aaron,

[00:25:11] Alison: Erin.

[00:25:12] Emily: are making out in the house.

[00:25:14] Alison: Get it, girl.

[00:25:15] Emily: She's in uniform and he is into it

[00:25:17] Alison: So Mandy, were you on the call when I talked about the 911 and the Kinsey scale?

[00:25:23] Mandy: I don't think so.

[00:25:24] Alison: Have I

[00:25:24] Mandy: Yeah.

[00:25:25] Alison: with you? In my heart, pretty much everybody on

[00:25:26] Mandy: No

[00:25:26] Alison: this show i- has a place on the Kinsey scale from one to six,

[00:25:31] Mandy: Okay

[00:25:32] Alison: or I guess from two to six.

[00:25:33] Mandy: Mm-hmm.

[00:25:34] Alison: No, from one to six 'cause zero is a number on the Kinsey scale. It's X that's the other one. from one to six everyone's on the scale except for Athena, who is a zero. She is, like, completely, totally heterosexually

[00:25:47] Mandy: Yeah

[00:25:48] Alison: and she's the kinkiest of the bunch.

[00:25:50] Mandy: Yeah. I can immediately, like, buy that

[00:25:53] Alison: Yeah. Sergeant

[00:25:55] Mandy: Yeah

[00:25:56] Alison: is the kinkiest person. Oh, God.

[00:25:58] Emily: Oh.

[00:25:59] Alison: yeah, [00:26:00] Sergeant 727L30 is the kinkiest one of the bunch, because they start doing a little role play her in her uniform

[00:26:07] Emily: Yes, they do. and what's his name? Aaron is, like, into it. and he's, like, doing a little officer, or I guess sergeant, I've been speeding down the highway. and he's really talking about, like, wanting her to take control, and she pulls out her handcuffs, and I'm gonna have to place you under arrest for being so fine. She puts the handcuffs on the bed. This bed was built for this. There's like a, an, a bed frame.

[00:26:35] Alison: Yeah

[00:26:36] Emily: and I don't think Michael would have been a part of this. I'm confused about this bed. So this bed feels like an Athena bed

[00:26:44] Alison: It's not. This bed is his bed.

[00:26:45] Emily: they were in her house.

[00:26:47] Alison: these are in his.

[00:26:48] Emily: Oh, this is his house, so he's

[00:26:50] Alison: house.

[00:26:51] Emily: prepared.

[00:26:52] Alison: Yeah.

[00:26:53] Emily: Okay, that makes way more sense. so she's handcuffs him to the bed, and then this [00:27:00] dum-dum puts the other handcuff around her hand

[00:27:02] Mandy: He's so stupid. He might be pretty. He's, he's stupid

[00:27:06] Emily: Yeah.

[00:27:07] Alison: pretty dumb.

[00:27:08] Emily: And she's like,

[00:27:09] Alison: he's pretty dumb

[00:27:10] Emily: dumb. And she's like, no." The

[00:27:12] Alison: me, did you just perhaps lock us together to the bed?"

[00:27:17] Emily: Are we,

[00:27:18] Alison: baby." And she's like, "No!

[00:27:19] Emily: are we perhaps trapped?

[00:27:21] Alison: Are we Trademark

[00:27:23] Emily: Trademark. the keys are in her belt, which is on the floor

[00:27:29] Alison: Rip.

[00:27:30] Emily: she's like, "Do not call for help. I do not want your, your friends to see us like this. I will..."

[00:27:34] Alison: know what? And that's fair.

[00:27:36] Emily: That is completely

[00:27:37] Mandy: That's very fair, yeah.

[00:27:38] Alison: Very fair.

[00:27:39] Mandy: That would've been on, I don't know, what was it? Vine

[00:27:43] Emily: Yeah.

[00:27:44] Mandy: at the time

[00:27:45] Emily: Yes. Yep. And of course, her phone is not within reach, but his is.

[00:27:51] Alison: Awesome.

[00:27:52] Emily: And she hasn't memorized any phone numbers because it's 2018 and we don't do that anymore. So she calls 911

[00:27:59] Alison: [00:28:00] Amen.

[00:28:00] Emily: and gets Abby,

[00:28:01] Alison: there for her

[00:28:02] Emily: number that is always there, and she's like, "Abby, I need you to do me a favor

[00:28:07] Alison: Sergeant Grant. A- Athena. Call me Athena.

[00:28:10] Mandy: I love that she's like, "No, no, we are not having my full title on record for this."

[00:28:14] Alison: This is a private conversation

[00:28:17] Emily: I need you to get Hen for me, and don't tell anyone about this ever.

[00:28:22] Alison: Ever. you. And Abby, to her credit, does.

[00:28:27] Emily: A girl's

[00:28:27] Mandy: Yeah, she just rolls with it. Yeah.

[00:28:29] Alison: Yeah, she's a girl's girl.

[00:28:30] Emily: That's...

[00:28:30] Alison: like, "Okay."

[00:28:31] Mandy: Something in her just like understood, "Oh, this is a boy toy situation. I know boy toy situations."

[00:28:36] Alison: boy toy situations.

[00:28:38] Emily: Do you know what's unfortunate though, speaking of things that are set up and then never, like, put down again? 911 calls are recorded.

[00:28:45] Alison: Yes.

[00:28:46] Emily: Why in nine years was there never like, "Hey, remember that call from Athena to 911? We should replay that."

[00:28:53] Alison: God, that would be so funny.

[00:28:55] Emily: Like an April Fools or Athena's birthday, or just like a

[00:28:58] Mandy: Yeah, seriously

[00:28:59] Emily: funny [00:29:00] calls and being like, "Athena, was that you?"

[00:29:01] Alison: I, never. Not me,

[00:29:03] Emily: No, no, not the...

[00:29:04] Mandy: No.

[00:29:05] Emily: If you play that call one more time, I will smack. Like, just something to, as a reminder of all the silly things they'd gotten up to.

[00:29:10] Alison: gotten up to so many silly things.

[00:29:13] Hen Rescues Athena & the Selfie

[00:29:13] Emily: Hen, the truest of besties, shows up at this man's house. How she got in the front door, we don't know

[00:29:18] Alison: Because she's a magician and probably broke

[00:29:21] Emily: I think that's probably why I kept assuming it was Athena's house because she got in the front door.

[00:29:26] Alison: Yeah, maybe

[00:29:27] Emily: and she's like completely worried and panicked and then sees them and just breaks down laughing

[00:29:33] Alison: is the funniest thing. Also, Aisha Hinds, I love your laugh.

[00:29:36] Emily: I do

[00:29:37] Mandy: Yes

[00:29:38] Emily: I,

[00:29:38] Alison: good laugh.

[00:29:39] Emily: does. She must be, I wonder if she's just a delight to be around. I hope she is

[00:29:43] Alison: so. She seems like a delight. I hope you're a nice person, I really do. You seem like such a nice person.

[00:29:51] Alison: I know. That's my hope. my wish for celebrities. It's like, I hope

[00:29:54] Mandy: Yeah

[00:29:55] Alison: you're kind. I hope you're good

[00:29:56] Emily: Me too. she's like, "You [00:30:00] called 911 for this?"

[00:30:03] Alison: she just does not stop laughing

[00:30:06] Emily: h- I...

[00:30:06] Alison: she

[00:30:07] Mandy: No. Appropriate and correct response to that situation

[00:30:11] Emily: And she's like, "Oh, you need the key?" She's like, "All right, let me unlock you." And Athena's like, "No, no, no. I didn't ask you to unlock me. I just want you to put the key where I can get to it."

[00:30:20] Alison: Just slide it right over here, friend. Right over here.

[00:30:23] Emily: "We're good. You can go." She's like, "Damn, get it girl." Like, this is the appropriate longtime best friend reaction to seeing your bestie

[00:30:33] Mandy: Mm-hmm.

[00:30:33] Emily: somebody's lap handcuffed to a bed

[00:30:36] Alison: You know, just like putting the pillow in front of him.

[00:30:39] Emily: I know. Incredible.

[00:30:41] Alison: just ... And Hen takes a picture because of course she does. Of course she

[00:30:44] Mandy: Of course she does. That was my favorite part.

[00:30:47] Emily: Get a little

[00:30:47] Mandy: She's like,

[00:30:48] Emily: there

[00:30:48] Mandy: "Selfie time."

[00:30:50] Alison: I love them so much. Hen and Athena for fucking ever. I love them, I love them, I love them.

[00:30:56] Mandy: I do believe that picture got pulled out on [00:31:00] nights to be like, "Hey, Athena, remember this?"

[00:31:02] Emily: I

[00:31:02] Mandy: the two of them. Yeah

[00:31:04] Emily: Remember, you get this one right here

[00:31:06] Alison: just for fun, because 9-1-1 has decided that from time to time they really enjoy callbacks, I would love for them to bring Erin back

[00:31:15] Emily: would be

[00:31:16] Mandy: Oh, that would be good

[00:31:17] Alison: That would be really fun.

[00:31:18] Emily: Is he tied to another bed?

[00:31:20] Alison: I hope so

[00:31:21] Emily: She's like, "Again?" Yeah.

[00:31:23] Alison: that like they, there's something about like they have to go to like a kink club or a strip club or something, and like he's like once again tied up in rigging that

[00:31:31] Emily: And he-

[00:31:31] Alison: safe, but the something else has like interacted

[00:31:34] Emily: Yeah. Maybe can he like own a kink club?

[00:31:37] Alison: Ah, yes.

[00:31:38] Emily: nine years, right?

[00:31:39] Mandy: Yeah

[00:31:40] Emily: and like he is the owner of like LA's finest kink club.

[00:31:43] Alison: Gorgeous. I love it.

[00:31:45] Emily: Yeah

[00:31:45] Alison: So Mandy, it's your turn to open a doc, right?

[00:31:48] Mandy: Is it?

[00:31:49] Emily: Every time something happens, I have to open

[00:31:51] Mandy: Hmm.

[00:31:51] Emily: Docs. So I think maybe it's your turn

[00:31:53] Alison: Every time something happens,

[00:31:54] Mandy: We'll see. Yeah. I'm waiting, I'm waiting for that, like, spark to hit my [00:32:00] brain.

[00:32:00] Alison: it's

[00:32:00] Mandy: See

[00:32:01] Alison: so excited. I

[00:32:02] Mandy: who it'll even be.

[00:32:03] Emily: Riley over blinks and I'm like, "God damn it."

[00:32:06] Alison: And, and you know what? There's beautiful stuff that comes out of each and every one of those docs, so I'm not complaining.

[00:32:13] Emily: shit to do. I can't be doing this. And yet...

[00:32:17] Alison: fic to write. You can't be doing work

[00:32:20] Mandy: You gotta suffer for the art. The art is fic

[00:32:23] Emily: Yeah, exactly. well, speaking of

[00:32:26] Buck & Abby's Hot Air Balloon Date

[00:32:26] Emily: suffering,

[00:32:28] Alison: Aw

[00:32:28] Emily: It's a babby date. I hate this. It's a

[00:32:30] Mandy: Yeah

[00:32:31] Emily: date.

[00:32:32] Alison: oh,

[00:32:32] Emily: Bubby,

[00:32:33] Mandy: Copy. Yeah, that's

[00:32:34] Emily: we are in wine country

[00:32:36] Alison: This makes me so sad even to think about

[00:32:40] Emily: But this is,

[00:32:41] Mandy: He was trying

[00:32:42] Emily: he, this boy tried so hard. Abby is wearing the biggest hat. Buck,

[00:32:47] Alison: She's precious

[00:32:49] Emily: Buck is waiting for her because he is the most perfect. He,

[00:32:52] Alison: Correct.

[00:32:52] Emily: has this beautiful bouquet of flowers, the most lovely little grin, and for some reason, a leather jacket.

[00:32:58] Alison: Eh, it's a thin [00:33:00] leather jacket. He's fine. It's gonna be cold up there

[00:33:02] Emily: they are,

[00:33:03] Alison: layers.

[00:33:04] Emily: he did. They are not dressed for the same event though

[00:33:07] Alison: No.

[00:33:08] Emily: But he has gotten them a hot air balloon

[00:33:11] Alison: Oh.

[00:33:11] Emily: champagne and truffles. Ugh

[00:33:13] Alison: He's trying

[00:33:15] Mandy: He, he's trying, but it, it feels like if you asked, like, an 18-year-old, like, boy to describe what a romantic date is, just this random, like, collection of cliches. It's very sweet, but also immediately I'm like, that is not what she needs. That

[00:33:31] Alison: No, it is

[00:33:32] Emily: And

[00:33:32] Mandy: is not what she needs. But he is trying. Yeah, yeah.

[00:33:35] Alison: like that's, Emily's right, that's the

[00:33:36] Mandy: It's definitely, yeah

[00:33:38] Emily: And

[00:33:39] Alison: is his, this is the first relationship he's

[00:33:41] Mandy: Mm-hmm.

[00:33:41] Alison: been in that he wants to try.

[00:33:43] Emily: Yeah.

[00:33:44] Alison: And so he is pulling out every stop he knows

[00:33:48] Emily: Mm-hmm

[00:33:48] Alison: he's learned from. based on the people he's learned from, this makes perfect sense

[00:33:53] Emily: Yeah. does have the most lovely little grin when she shows up, so...

[00:33:57] Alison: he

[00:33:58] Mandy: Yeah, he was very cute

[00:33:59] Emily: [00:34:00] And he, he does say the thing of like, "I wanna make you feel amazing, so today we fly." Like, that's-- we're-- it's just not what she needs

[00:34:07] Alison: It's not what she needs.

[00:34:08] Mandy: No. It's, it's not what most human beings are gonna need. Like- And yet

[00:34:14] Alison: he's

[00:34:15] Emily: No. Because her

[00:34:15] Mandy: Yeah

[00:34:16] Alison: It does

[00:34:17] Emily: and it's,

[00:34:18] Mandy: Oh.

[00:34:18] Emily: Carla, and Patricia is having another episode and you hear her like, "Why are you keeping me prisoner?" And, yeah, Abby's gonna ditch for her, her mom.

[00:34:28] Alison: Yeah.

[00:34:29] Emily: And Buck kind of, there, I don't think anyone's wrong here 'cause he rightfully is like, "It's a hot air balloon.

[00:34:34] Emily: I can't reschedule it like dinner."

[00:34:36] Alison: Yeah. And like no one

[00:34:38] Mandy: Yeah

[00:34:38] Alison: one in this scenario is right or

[00:34:40] Mandy: Yeah

[00:34:41] Alison: tricky part about it, is that allowed to be in their feelings about this because it does suck, and it has sucked

[00:34:49] Emily: Yeah. It does, it has, it will. She takes the flowers

[00:34:53] Mandy: Yeah.

[00:34:54] Alison: and that's fine. They're for her

[00:34:55] Emily: And

[00:34:56] Mandy: Yeah

[00:34:56] Emily: and then like to the hot air balloon, [00:35:00] you wanna give me a lift to work?"

[00:35:01] Alison: Lol.

[00:35:02] Emily: but where's your car, bro?

[00:35:03] Alison: Yeah, it's true. Where is your car?

[00:35:05] Emily: "Dude, dude, where's my car?" Well, his beloved Jeep

[00:35:08] Alison: Yes

[00:35:09] Emily: but yeah. Which, yeah, it sucks. And then, and okay, so we go into the... He goes back to work, which again...

[00:35:17] Alison: else to hang out

[00:35:18] Emily: Well, so it's weird. Okay, so he goes to the station, and earlier Abby was like, "We have, we both have the graveyard shift." But then Bobby is like, "I thought you had the morning off."

[00:35:30] Mandy: Oh

[00:35:31] Emily: So

[00:35:32] Alison: No idea

[00:35:33] Emily: Which is true. Anyway, and, and, Buck tells Bobby that Abby bailed on him, and he's like, "I'm super into her, and she's smart, and she, she has money." Like, bruh. the sex is great.

[00:35:45] Alison: he's got no money.

[00:35:46] Emily: At

[00:35:47] Mandy: Yeah.

[00:35:47] Emily: he seems to have no money.

[00:35:49] Alison: He has negative money

[00:35:51] Mandy: He just spent his money on a hot air balloon.

[00:35:53] Emily: He did

[00:35:53] Alison: Correct. He, like,

[00:35:55] Mandy: Mm-hmm.

[00:35:55] Alison: do not have money for this. What are you doing?

[00:35:57] Emily: Again, the concept of money in "9-1-1" [00:36:00] is nebulous and tenuous to reality. He lives with, like, four dudes, and firefighters seem to make an okay amount, especially 'cause they seem to be able to get as much overtime as they want.

[00:36:12] Alison: Pretty much

[00:36:14] Emily: they get health insurance. So I don't know could he be broke.

[00:36:18] Emily: I don't... Doesn't ma- doesn't matter. and he's like, "But this is the second week in a row where our, our dates have been screwed up because of her mom." And Bobby, because he does have a giant crush on Abby,

[00:36:28] Alison: Correct.

[00:36:29] Mandy: Yes

[00:36:30] Emily: who are great tend to have full lives." I was like, "Yeah, you think she's great."

[00:36:36] Alison: you think she's great

[00:36:37] Emily: Yeah. You, You wanna date her. and Buck is like, "I like her and her mom, but maybe this relationship is not for me." And Bobbi, clocks him. Can we say that? Clock? It's like, it's because it's a real one. This is a real adult relationship.

[00:36:51] Bobby's Advice: Step Into the Mess

[00:36:51] Alison: Yeah

[00:36:52] Emily: And Buck's like, "Well, I'm 26. I, I don't wanna be a slut anymore, but maybe I don't want this." So what do I do [00:37:00] about that? And this is where Bobby gives the line that we, the show clings to, or maybe just fandom, where, she, what she needs from you is to step inside with her And not, and keep her company in this trap

[00:37:17] Alison: In

[00:37:17] Emily: and

[00:37:17] Alison: in

[00:37:18] Emily: in the mess, and not you try to pull her out of it. You can't fix her

[00:37:22] Alison: You can't fix her and you can't pull her out of it. There's nothing that you can do to pull her out of it. what she needs is company. She needs someone to sit next to her in the dark. She needs you to step into it with her.

[00:37:33] Emily: Mm-hmm.

[00:37:34] Alison: I agree

[00:37:35] Emily: Yeah.

[00:37:36] Alison: with Bobert

[00:37:37] Emily: Bobbert. Puppy boy. Puppy B

[00:37:39] Alison: Bobert, my Bobby boy

[00:37:39] Emily: Because he is the adult in the situation, and wouldn't it have been nice if he had someone to step inside with him? Well, Hen and, and Buck kinda did

[00:37:50] Alison: Yeah, they

[00:37:50] Mandy: Yeah

[00:37:51] Alison: mo- and he's better because of it

[00:37:54] Emily: Yeah. Now, would things have been different if his wife back in [00:38:00] Minnesota hadn't tried to pull him out of his depression and had stepped inside with him?

[00:38:04] Alison: Maybe

[00:38:04] Emily: Maybe.

[00:38:05] Mandy: Yeah

[00:38:06] Alison: Yeah.

[00:38:07] Emily: I don't know

[00:38:07] Alison: of saying, "You're tough, you're strong, you can do this," sometimes what you need is someone to say, "Yeah, that absolutely blows,"

[00:38:14] Emily: Yeah.

[00:38:15] Alison: and just acknowledge that it sucks

[00:38:18] Mandy: Yeah

[00:38:19] Alison: go from there

[00:38:20] Emily: Mm-hmm

[00:38:20] Alison: I don't need you to fix it, I just need you to listen.

[00:38:23] Emily: Yeah. Who knows? But Buck's got some things to think about

[00:38:28] Alison: He does. wonder if he will internalize this lesson.

[00:38:32] Emily: I,

[00:38:32] Alison: I wonder if he will do it in time

[00:38:34] Emily: I wonder if this will, change his life completely.

[00:38:38] Alison: wonder if this will change the trajectory of his adult life.

[00:38:41] Emily: Maybe.

[00:38:41] Emergency #3: Hoarder House Rescue

[00:38:41] Mandy: Mm-hmm.

[00:38:42] Emily: but before that, we have another emergency

[00:38:44] Alison: My note here says, "Booby trapped? More like Bobby trapped."

[00:38:48] Emily: We have Cecil and his brother Winslow in their,

[00:38:52] Alison: by

[00:38:53] Emily: these are great names, in their hoarder house. And we got one of the brothers, he's like crawling through a pile of [00:39:00] stuff and the pile collapses

[00:39:03] Alison: Rip.

[00:39:04] Emily: Not great. So

[00:39:06] Alison: great

[00:39:06] Emily: they call 911, and because there's only one house, one firehouse in the greater Los Angeles area, the 118 to the rescue, with a warning that the house is booby-trapped,

[00:39:18] Alison: bobby trapped

[00:39:19] Emily: Yeah. they try to saw open the front door, and just piles of shit fall out from, like, 1968. And we hear from a neighbor that one of the brothers hasn't left the house decades,

[00:39:33] Alison: Right

[00:39:34] Emily: but the other one does once in a while. special boy, Buck, up a ladder to one of the windows to, like, try to pry it open, a bowling ball, like, smashes through and bashes him in the head, and he almost falls off a ladder

[00:39:49] Alison: the entire time I'm like, "Did that not concuss you, my

[00:39:53] Emily: Y-

[00:39:53] Alison: guy?

[00:39:53] Emily: yeah, I

[00:39:54] Mandy: You would think

[00:39:56] Alison: What just happened?"

[00:39:57] Emily: I feel like that would've been, "Okay, come down the ladder. [00:40:00] We're gonna have to check you out in the ambulance."

[00:40:02] Alison: for sure.

[00:40:04] Emily: Like let's take a little look at those pupils.

[00:40:07] Alison: Just a little look-see

[00:40:08] Emily: A little,

[00:40:08] Alison: here

[00:40:09] Emily: look. Let's do a little concussion protocol. That did not look good

[00:40:14] Alison: Did look great, bud.

[00:40:16] Emily: so we've got Abby connecting Bobby and Cecil on the phone. Winslow's trapped. Cecil's like, "I can't disarm the traps. I am blind." There's a lot happening in this house.

[00:40:27] Alison: a lot

[00:40:28] Chimney Quotes Die Hard & Cecil's Backstory

[00:40:28] Alison: happening

[00:40:29] Emily: but Chimney, we got Chimney who can finally do something good because he, he can fit through, the, the tunnel and he gets to quote Die Hard for the first time while he army crawls

[00:40:43] Alison: makes him so happy.

[00:40:45] Emily: really

[00:40:45] Mandy: the quoting Die Hard a recurring thing?

[00:40:48] Emily: Yes.

[00:40:49] Alison: Chimney

[00:40:49] Mandy: Okay, nice

[00:40:51] Alison: Chimney's a movie

[00:40:53] Emily: Yeah

[00:40:53] Mandy: Okay, I like that

[00:40:54] Emily: Chimney's a movie guy, and Buck, for some reason in the early seasons, doesn't know pop [00:41:00] culture.

[00:41:00] Alison: at all

[00:41:01] Emily: Yeah, despite being the youngest of them. So when Buck doesn't get it, that he's like, "You make me sad, Buck." Yeah. but Chimney being the second oldest, Bobby and then

[00:41:13] Mandy: Okay

[00:41:14] Emily: is very pop culture savvy I think he would probably kick ass at like pop culture Jeopardy

[00:41:20] Alison: Oh, yeah

[00:41:21] Emily: or Trivial Pursuit. So he gets through, he's disarming the trip wires, gets to Cecil. we hear about Cecil's backstory, that they took the house from the parents in 1967, but they had to protect the house and make sure that nobody stole anything. And please don't let this become my life

[00:41:43] Alison: Okay

[00:41:44] Emily: Because my

[00:41:45] Mandy: Deal

[00:41:46] Emily: was a little bit like, and my uncle like this. Not that you had to protect it from people stealing anything, that they hid things in the house and, like, didn't get rid of stuff that really needed [00:42:00] to be gotten rid of. Not quite hoarder, but definitely like, hide money in the walls."

[00:42:06] Mandy: Ah, yeah

[00:42:08] Emily: Which then means when they died, we were like, "Well, fuck, now we have to go through the entire goddamn house

[00:42:14] Alison: now we

[00:42:15] Emily: finding

[00:42:16] Alison: because there's money in the walls.

[00:42:17] Emily: Money in the literal walls and, like, the curtains,

[00:42:23] Alison: Interesting.

[00:42:24] Emily: the books.

[00:42:26] Alison: Interesting.

[00:42:27] Emily: I'm pretty sure we didn't find everything

[00:42:29] Alison: It's all right. Maybe somebody else did

[00:42:32] Emily: Maybe we go back

[00:42:32] Alison: No.

[00:42:34] Emily: Yeah.

[00:42:34] Alison: Time travel says we can't go back

[00:42:35] Alison: The Hoarder House

[00:42:37] Emily: So,

[00:42:38] Mandy: Oh yeah.

[00:42:38] Emily: they start clearing space to get to our trapped Winslow, who has a pretty gnarly broken leg

[00:42:46] Mandy: Yeah

[00:42:47] Alison: That's a compound fracture.

[00:42:49] Emily: Yeah. I bet there's a paramedic out there in, in El Paso who could fix it.

[00:42:55] Alison: bet you there is.

[00:42:56] Emily: I miss him and we don't even know him yet.

[00:42:58] Alison: I know, I miss him already. I [00:43:00] miss you

[00:43:01] Emily: We just don't even know him.

[00:43:02] Alison: It, yeah, we're, we were making jokes about other people who may also be trapped in certain scenarios that we just haven't met

[00:43:09] Emily: Yep. There's somewhere out there is a sister trapped in a violent

[00:43:14] Alison: Some- in a

[00:43:15] Emily: something,

[00:43:15] Alison: a something. She's trapped into

[00:43:17] Emily: And there's a man trapped out there in a something, something, and

[00:43:20] Alison: Something, something.

[00:43:21] Emily: they're just trapped and they don't even know it, and we don't know them.

[00:43:24] Alison: don't know

[00:43:24] Emily: So the 118 have to reset, Winslow's leg to reestablish blood flow so he doesn't lose it,

[00:43:31] Alison: Yes.

[00:43:32] Emily: I hope I don't ever have to go through that.

[00:43:35] Mandy: God, no

[00:43:35] Alison: I hope I'm unconscious

[00:43:37] Emily: unconscious. And this poor man, you know, they have to take him to the hospital, but he doesn't wanna leave his brother behind because it's been-- He, the other brother hasn't been alone or left the house in 40 years.

[00:43:48] Alison: Yeah.

[00:43:49] Emily: but Cecil stands and leaves the house to follow his brother

[00:43:54] Cecil & Winslow: Can't Break the Cycle

[00:43:54] Mandy: Yeah

[00:43:55] Emily: into the world for the first time in decades

[00:43:57] Mandy: This storyline made me sad. As soon as, [00:44:00] like, it showed, like, the, the first bit, I was like, "Oh, I remember this," and I remember thinking, "I don't know if I wanna keep watching this show," because that just made me really sad, and also, I mean, obviously combined with what else happens at the end

[00:44:13] Emily: Yeah. It was sad

[00:44:15] Alison: But yeah, it is sad. It's,

[00:44:16] Mandy: Yeah.

[00:44:17] Alison: It's really bittersweet

[00:44:18] Mandy: Yeah

[00:44:19] Alison: you know, love my brother, but at the end of the day you can't break family cycles

[00:44:24] Emily: Mm-hmm.

[00:44:25] Mandy: Mm-hmm.

[00:44:26] Alison: Like, it's, just because you love somebody doesn't mean it's immediately going to solve everything. Like, I think my thing with Winslow, and Cecil is that they don't see it as a problem.

[00:44:39] Emily: Yeah.

[00:44:40] Mandy: Yeah

[00:44:41] Emily: Mm-hmm.

[00:44:41] Alison: the way we live, and I don't want to change it.

[00:44:45] Emily: Right. Yeah, I don't want to

[00:44:47] Alison: know that as soon as Winslow is healed, they're just gonna immediately go right back to it

[00:44:51] Emily: Yeah, sucks.

[00:44:53] Alison: hard.

[00:44:54] Emily: It is hard

[00:44:55] Alison: And it's hard for us as the viewers, it's hard for them as the characters who have to [00:45:00] live it. It's just hard

[00:45:02] Emily: Mm-hmm. But it's also, like, realistic because that's the way it works sometimes

[00:45:08] Alison: and we're talking about patterns and can you break the cycle? It's like, not

[00:45:13] Buck & Abby's Second Date & Breakup

[00:45:13] Alison: always

[00:45:13] Emily: Not always Well, attempting to break the cycle and the pattern, Buck and Abby are on, date attempt number two at...

[00:45:22] Mandy: much better

[00:45:22] Emily: Well, of the episode.

[00:45:24] Alison: two of the

[00:45:25] Emily: Yes. At a random, not special restaurant, just in case she has to cancel

[00:45:29] Alison: And you know what? He sounds like a little bitch when he's saying it out loud. He's like, "I got

[00:45:33] Mandy: He does. Yeah

[00:45:35] Emily: He does. He is,

[00:45:35] Alison: like, he is problem-solving in real

[00:45:37] Emily: yes

[00:45:38] Alison: He is problem-solving in real time. What's the problem? sometimes your life is so complicated that you have to cancel on things last minute, and

[00:45:46] Mandy: Yeah

[00:45:47] Alison: but let's alter our plans so that when you have to cancel at the last minute, like, nobody's feelings get butt

[00:45:53] Emily: Mm-hmm. And I don't lose quite so much money

[00:45:56] Alison: don't lose

[00:45:57] Mandy: Hmm.

[00:45:57] Alison: money, and people don't look at me [00:46:00] sad.

[00:46:00] Emily: Yeah. 'Cause that hot air balloon guy probably went home and was like, "Did you see the shit that just happened at work?"

[00:46:05] Alison: yeah, exactly. Poor guy

[00:46:07] Emily: dude got stood up on a mountaintop

[00:46:09] Alison: Yep.

[00:46:10] Mandy: also just like less pressure on her, less added like mental space because like there's guilt if you cancel on someone when they went all out. Like that's shitty. Like it feels bad on both sides. Yeah.

[00:46:27] Emily: Mm-hmm

[00:46:28] Mandy: So like this way it's, it's much, I don't know. Good job Buck for even if he does sound like a little bitch about it, for attempting something a little lower effort

[00:46:38] Emily: Yes

[00:46:38] Alison: He, he took Bobby's advice to heart. He is, like, actively ... And we, and the thing about it is that we're, like, watching him do it. He's, like, telling us, like, "I did this thing because your life is hard right now,

[00:46:49] Mandy: Mm-hmm.

[00:46:50] Alison: it less scary." and so, like, hearing that out loud is kind of, like, unsettling. But he is actively trying. He's saying, "Look, I don't [00:47:00] want me to make your life harder, so I'm gonna try to make it easier in the only way I know how, and this is how I know." And I think it's very cute

[00:47:09] Emily: is very cute. I wonder how much of it he actually believes, where when he's saying like, 'cause she, she really does

[00:47:13] Alison: Yeah.

[00:47:13] Emily: break with him in this moment

[00:47:15] Alison: Absolutely she does

[00:47:16] Emily: And 'cause he's like, "You're breaking up with me." And she's like, "I'm letting you off the hook." And he's like, "Well, I don't want that."

[00:47:23] Alison: yeah, I'm letting you off the hook. Abby is trying in this moment to break up with Buck

[00:47:28] Emily: Yeah. And he's like, "If I... No, thank you. I don't want that. the price I have to pay to be..." It's, the phrasing is so weird. "To be

[00:47:37] Mandy: Yeah

[00:47:38] Emily: a woman like you is canceled dates, then so what? I'm in. I'm not going anywhere." And I, I think he's kind of trying to convince himself a little bit

[00:47:48] Mandy: I mean, yeah, like she breaks up with him for exactly the reason he told Bobby he wasn't sure he wanted to be with her. But it's like as soon as he hears her say it, he's like, "Oh, no, no, backtrack.

[00:47:58] Emily: Yeah

[00:47:59] Mandy: What's the [00:48:00] opposite direction of this? How do I get in that direction?"

[00:48:03] Alison: 'Cause Buck, this whole time, from the pilot, wants so badly to belong to someone.

[00:48:09] Mandy: Mm-hmm.

[00:48:10] Alison: is so prepared to commit so that he has somebody next to him.

[00:48:16] Emily: Mm-hmm

[00:48:16] Alison: And he, he's all cool to, like, think about it when the impact isn't immediate, but when the immediate impact is staring him in the face, he's like, "Absolutely not.

[00:48:26] Alison: I am gonna cling onto both hands." Like, if this is what I have to do to keep you, then I will My poor

[00:48:31] Emily: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Poor

[00:48:37] Alison: I just, I wish in this moment, as much as it would've hurt to see Buck get hurt, w- I also want Abby to have what she wants

[00:48:45] Emily: Yeah.

[00:48:45] Alison: Like Abby has made it pretty clear at this point. She's like, "I, I need to not be saddled with the, like, emotional weight of trying to not hurt you

[00:48:55] Emily: Mm-hmm

[00:48:55] Mandy: Yeah

[00:48:56] Alison: now." Because, like, she really likes him, [00:49:00] but I think trying to keep up the emotional maintenance is getting to be a lot for her.

[00:49:05] Emily: Mm, mm-hmm.

[00:49:07] Alison: And so she was trying to let herself off the hook too,

[00:49:10] Emily: Yeah.

[00:49:10] Alison: and Buck said no.

[00:49:11] Emily: And then you said no. Yeah

[00:49:13] Alison: So everyone's having a, a time in the club right now.

[00:49:17] Emily: Well, and Athena and Aaron have another date night.

[00:49:20] Alison: they

[00:49:21] Emily: He has made a, a very fancy duck dish for her. And he tries to be, like, real smooth about it and be like, "I bet your ex-husband wasn't a gourmet chef." And she was like, "Actually, Michael was a great chef. Don't talk shit about him. Thank you very much."

[00:49:34] Alison: my notes write, "Your ex-husband wasn't a chef at his spare time," unquote. No, but her next one will

[00:49:39] Emily: That's what I said too. I was like, "Wait until you meet Bobby.

[00:49:42] Alison: Wait until...

[00:49:43] Emily: Just you wait."

[00:49:45] Alison: Just you

[00:49:45] Athena & Aaron's Big Sur Weekend

[00:49:45] Alison: wait

[00:49:46] Emily: now Aaron is getting a little ahead of himself because he wants to take her away to Big Sur for the weekend And...

[00:49:52] Alison: like, on the one hand I get how Athena can read this as like it too seriously,

[00:49:58] Emily: Mm-hmm

[00:49:59] Alison: but to [00:50:00] me this is not taking it too seriously.

[00:50:02] Mandy: This sounded like let's do exactly what we've been doing, but in a different location.

[00:50:07] Alison: But in a different

[00:50:07] Mandy: Yeah.

[00:50:08] Alison: This is like, do you wanna go for away, for a weekend and have a lot of sex? Like, what I heard

[00:50:14] Emily: yeah, I, and I think it's that she's just a little old-fashioned.

[00:50:21] Alison: I, she is. Athena's a little old-fashioned. She wants to

[00:50:24] Mandy: Mm-hmm.

[00:50:24] Alison: courted.

[00:50:26] Emily: Yes. And she is still married, and that means something to her, I think it keeps in line with her character. I think for Athena, it would have been a little strange for her to fuck off with someone she's known for, like, a week

[00:50:41] Alison: Yeah, I

[00:50:42] Mandy: Yeah

[00:50:42] Emily: town as a sergeant to be like,

[00:50:46] Alison: to explain it to her

[00:50:46] Emily: "Mm-hmm."

[00:50:47] Alison: going?" And her ex- and her husband, her vaguely ex-husband, "You're going on a sex-cation with your new whatever?"

[00:50:54] Emily: Mm-hmm. Who we don't, we don't know. We haven't met. You wouldn't let Michael's [00:51:00] longtime boy- well, not longtime boyfriend, but boyfriend he's been with for a little while

[00:51:03] Alison: episodes,

[00:51:04] Mandy: Yeah.

[00:51:05] Emily: the kid-

[00:51:05] Alison: kids,

[00:51:06] Emily: the kids, but you're gonna go off, leave the kids behind to have a fuck fest with a new guy.

[00:51:11] Alison: yeah,

[00:51:13] Emily: it,

[00:51:13] Alison: work

[00:51:14] Emily: make sense for her. and she has this thing where she, she's not divorced yet. That's, it's not a formality. Like, it means something. she's also... Like, she hasn't been single for a very long time. And she does... There is some retconning again because we'll become retconning because she says, you know, she got married because her clock was ticking, and now she's getting divorced for herself. But we will... there will be some flashbacks, about Athena that kind of change

[00:51:41] Alison: Yeah,

[00:51:42] Emily: a lot of this

[00:51:43] Alison: that will counteract the statement

[00:51:45] Emily: Yeah, which is that they do this. But

[00:51:48] Alison: I don't hate the story they came up with at the end of it, but I

[00:51:51] Emily: I don't either. It's just a...

[00:51:52] Alison: that it changed.

[00:51:53] Emily: it's just annoying that like,

[00:51:55] Alison: Yeah.

[00:51:55] Emily: you did something and now you did something else. Like,

[00:51:58] Alison: Just ignore that. It's [00:52:00] fine

[00:52:00] Emily: porque? but yeah, so just believe this is the end of Eren

[00:52:04] Alison: Yeah, I think so.

[00:52:06] Emily: But that's, that's actually gonna be okay.

[00:52:08] Alison: Yeah, feel all right.

[00:52:09] Emily: gonna be okay.

[00:52:10] Hen Confronts Eva

[00:52:10] Emily: Hen and Ava

[00:52:11] Alison: Not okay

[00:52:13] Mandy: No

[00:52:14] Emily: Hen rocks up to Eva's apartment, and I was like, "Don't go in there."

[00:52:18] Alison: Correct. I'm like, "Henrietta, what are you doing? Look at your life. Look at your choices.

[00:52:24] Emily: Stay. I was like,

[00:52:24] Alison: gonna make things better?"

[00:52:25] Emily: "Stay away." and Eva's like, "We're not supposed to talk. Acting like this isn't all her fault." and Hank gets in her face talking about like, "This is just you trying to get back with me. It's not about Denny. Y- you're heinous." And

[00:52:38] Alison: Yeah

[00:52:39] Emily: Eva's like, "This is be- you know, Karen has you trapped in a sad suburban little life." And I was like,

[00:52:45] Alison: First of

[00:52:46] Emily: ouch. Don't... Get Karen's name out of your mouth." Like

[00:52:50] Alison: mouth. Get Karen's name out of your mouth right

[00:52:52] Emily: How dare you? and Hen's really just like, "What do we have to do to get you to stop? Like, get out of here. We couldn't have [00:53:00] a life, you and me. You kept fucking up. You do it, and you're not gonna do it now." So, what do you want us to do here?

[00:53:08] Alison: Yeah. I survived

[00:53:09] Emily: Mm-hmm.

[00:53:10] Alison: oh, ouch.

[00:53:12] Emily: Yeah. And just like you're incapable of caring about anyone but yourself. Which unfortunately,

[00:53:18] Mandy: Yeah.

[00:53:19] Emily: fuck up though

[00:53:20] Mandy: Yeah. It's-- she wouldn't have had any, like, material to run with if not for Hin's mistakes

[00:53:27] Emily: Mm-hmm.

[00:53:28] Alison: Just it's the moon. It's the moon's

[00:53:29] Mandy: Yeah

[00:53:30] Alison: the moon.

[00:53:30] Emily: It's that damn moon.

[00:53:31] Alison: Goddamn moon.

[00:53:33] Emily: But, you know, I guess Hen's trying to get out of the self-imposed trap

[00:53:37] Alison: She's trapped. It's a trap

[00:53:39] Emily: It's a trap. but so we've got Abby's little voiceover here at the end of, a wolf will chew its own leg off to escape a trap. Now, I, don't know if that's true, but let's, let's roll with it.

[00:53:56] Alison: Let's roll with that.

[00:53:57] Emily: we see our homeless man from the beginning [00:54:00] leaving a shelter he was staying at to go back to, a camp. feel...

[00:54:05] Alison: tent.

[00:54:06] Emily: Hmm?

[00:54:06] Alison: Probably to his tent

[00:54:08] Emily: Yeah, to his original tent. I feel like there's a very large conversation about the shelter system

[00:54:16] Alison: Yes.

[00:54:17] Emily: could be had here that isn't being had here.

[00:54:20] Alison: Yeah.

[00:54:21] Emily: But I'm not prepared to have that. So

[00:54:23] Alison: not

[00:54:24] Emily: I'm not qualified to have it at all, so I'm gonna leave it be. and Abby's voiceover talks about, like, if you're cornered in a situation, you'll do whatever it takes to break free.

[00:54:32] Emily: And this is where we see the mom and the son just dropping him off with a singular box of nothing

[00:54:39] Alison: Like he's able to

[00:54:40] Mandy: Uh-huh.

[00:54:41] Emily: Great.

[00:54:41] Alison: like that with any job at

[00:54:44] Emily: I'm sorry.

[00:54:44] Alison: kidding

[00:54:45] Emily: 40 times your income to get an apartment.

[00:54:49] Alison: Renting an apartment by himself in Los Angeles, he's paying, at best he's paying $1,500 a

[00:54:56] Emily: In 2018? Yeah. Like,

[00:54:58] Alison: 2018.

[00:54:59] Emily: [00:55:00] no.

[00:55:00] Alison: No.

[00:55:01] Emily: Nope.

[00:55:01] Alison: No.

[00:55:02] Emily: Cecil and Winslow are back in their apartment. He's putting the boards back up on the windows, like, Abby's saying, you know, "Traps don't look the same for everyone, especially not from the inside," because sometimes you go back to your old life, whether or not it's good for you

[00:55:18] Alison: Yeah, because sometimes you go back whether or not it's good for

[00:55:20] Emily: And Abby up one morning, on her mom

[00:55:25] Alison: her

[00:55:25] Patricia's Death & Abby's Grief

[00:55:25] Alison: little

[00:55:26] Emily: in her little nightgown, and Patricia has died in the night

[00:55:30] Alison: RIP.

[00:55:31] Mandy: It's very sad

[00:55:32] Emily: And Abby sits on the bed and cries,

[00:55:35] Alison: And I cried with her

[00:55:36] Mandy: Yeah

[00:55:37] Emily: And she says, "Once in a while, the very thing that everyone thinks is holding us back is what makes us feel at home." Because that was her mom

[00:55:44] Alison: At the end of the day, that was her mom

[00:55:46] Mandy: Yeah

[00:55:47] Emily: mean, it was hard and difficult and a terrible thing to go through, and really probably the worst parts of her life.

[00:55:55] Mandy: Yeah

[00:55:56] Alison: And

[00:55:57] Emily: and also her mom. And now [00:56:00] it's over

[00:56:01] Alison: For better or for worse, it's over

[00:56:03] Mandy: Yeah. And we have one episode left of "Abby"?

[00:56:06] Emily: Well, you're not supposed to know that, but we have...

[00:56:08] Alison: we have one episode left of season one. Emily, shut your mouth

[00:56:10] Mandy: Yeah.

[00:56:11] Emily: have one episode left of

[00:56:12] Mandy: Well, okay. I actually have the scene that Abby comes back. I think I did watch that, just the scene on YouTube.

[00:56:19] Alison: Lol. That

[00:56:20] Mandy: So,

[00:56:21] Emily: Yeah.

[00:56:22] Mandy: tell you any of the other context besides trains and yeah.

[00:56:26] Alison: That, that's all you need to

[00:56:27] Emily: That's what

[00:56:27] Mandy: Yeah.

[00:56:28] Emily: Trans

[00:56:28] Alison: Trains

[00:56:29] Mandy: Yes, the next episode is the season one finale after 10 whole episodes

[00:56:36] Alison: Wow

[00:56:36] Emily: Yeah. It's a very short season. It's very annoying, actually.

[00:56:40] Alison: It's, it's really, especially because season one is so much fun.

[00:56:43] Emily: I love season one.

[00:56:44] Why Season One Is Foundational

[00:56:44] Emily: I-

[00:56:45] Alison: It's, it's weird and grungy and horny and sad.

[00:56:48] Mandy: Yeah

[00:56:49] Emily: fight people who are like, "I don't watch season one." I'm like, "Well, then you don't know ball."

[00:56:55] Alison: You don't know

[00:56:56] Emily: Like, you

[00:56:56] Alison: How do you not love, like, Bobby's [00:57:00] entire origin story?

[00:57:02] Emily: talk to me about "9-1-1" if you don't watch season one. Like

[00:57:06] Alison: like about Hen's entire like relationship and family foundation. If you love Buck in Season 8 and 9 but you don't know Buck from Season 1, like stop it.

[00:57:17] Emily: Don't,

[00:57:18] Mandy: Mm-hmm. I mean,

[00:57:19] Emily: don't talk to

[00:57:20] Mandy: I do feel like this is pretty important in his, like, I'm assuming arc as a character

[00:57:26] Emily: Yeah

[00:57:27] Alison: They

[00:57:27] Mandy: where he starts out from. Yeah

[00:57:29] Alison: yes.

[00:57:29] Emily: It's this whole argument. People are like, "Well, I just don't like him. He's a fuckboy." Like, I know.

[00:57:35] Alison: know. Like, if you don't understand Chimney's relationship with Tatiana and the way that he believes himself to not be a crucial member of the team,

[00:57:46] Emily: Yeah.

[00:57:47] Alison: don't get that, then his whole trajectory from where he goes doesn't matter.

[00:57:53] Emily: Yeah

[00:57:53] Alison: Like, if you don't understand that fuckboy Buck is just looking for, [00:58:00] like, someone to love him and for someone to stick around, and you don't understand the entirety of what happens with Abby,

[00:58:08] Emily: Mm-hmm.

[00:58:09] Alison: completely

[00:58:10] Mandy: Yeah

[00:58:10] Alison: trajectory of where he goes.

[00:58:12] Alison: Like, you don't know shit. Like, season one is foundational. If listening to us yap about season one has not inspired you, then, like, please just turn us off and go watch season one.

[00:58:21] Emily: Just watch it.

[00:58:22] Alison: Just,

[00:58:22] Emily: It'll take you 10 hours. It's a day. It's one day

[00:58:25] Alison: It's one big day. Like, it, it, it's so worth it

[00:58:29] Emily: can waste one day watching. I bought the DVD. You can waste one day watching season one.

[00:58:35] Alison: Stay

[00:58:36] Emily: Listen

[00:58:36] Alison: the weather is particularly bad for you, whatever that

[00:58:39] Emily: Yeah.

[00:58:39] Alison: you,

[00:58:40] Emily: I was gonna say, if it's hot, stay inside. But you're right, it could be rainy on somewhere else

[00:58:45] Alison: it could be super, super scary rainy, it could be very bad ice, it could be blistering heat. Whatever bad weather means to you, stay inside and binge season one

[00:58:53] Emily: And then come back to it and tell us why we're wrong.

[00:58:56] Alison: Yes, and then you can come back and fight

[00:58:57] Emily: Yeah.

[00:58:58] Alison: least we'll be able to have a conversation about it.

[00:58:59] Emily: [00:59:00] Yeah.

[00:59:00] Alison: But

[00:59:01] Emily: are times where you're just like, "What do you mean Bobby killed 148 people?" That's crazy work for a network TV show to be like, "I'm sorry, the main cast member is a murderer."

[00:59:13] Alison: murder. Big murder

[00:59:14] Emily: But it's fine because that's our Peepaw. Yeah, I know he killed 148 people, and I love him

[00:59:22] Mandy's Thoughts on Abby & Age Gap Tease

[00:59:22] Alison: I love him. Mandy, I thought about you this whole episode about Abby. Tell me your thoughts

[00:59:28] Mandy: I mean, I love her. I do feel like she and Buck definitely were not meant to make it long term. I think that is not what she needs in her life.

[00:59:39] Alison: No.

[00:59:40] Mandy: He's the beginning of trying

[00:59:42] Alison: He is trying

[00:59:43] Mandy: And she probably needs someone who does not require her to... I mean, this is gonna sound a little mean, but she needs someone that she doesn't have to head pat and go, "Okay, that was good,"

[00:59:53] Emily: mm-hmm.

[00:59:58] Alison: calls him a boy

[00:59:59] Mandy: Yeah[01:00:00]

[01:00:00] Alison: like, "Yeah, that's what he is. The sex is great.

[01:00:03] Emily: Mm-hmm.

[01:00:03] Alison: Like, he makes me feel beautiful." Like, yes, good.

[01:00:07] Mandy: Yeah, like that, that's what she needed. But he caught feelings and

[01:00:11] Alison: feelings, and I

[01:00:13] Mandy: yeah

[01:00:13] Alison: what, do you think that Abby's caught feelings?

[01:00:16] Mandy: I think she cares for him, but I think she can definitely see more long-term than he can.

[01:00:21] Alison: Yeah.

[01:00:21] Mandy: she's got very tempered feelings, like

[01:00:24] Alison: Yeah.

[01:00:24] Mandy: in reality feelings

[01:00:26] Alison: And he's just kinda flying high?

[01:00:28] Mandy: Yeah, 'cause he's never done it before, and that makes sense. And I'm a fan of an age gap relationship, but these two people are not quite at the points in either side of those ages where they work well together

[01:00:40] Alison: I'm sorry. If this is gonna squick you out, please hit, you know, fast-forward about 30 seconds. Mandy, did I hear you say something about age gap?

[01:00:47] Mandy: Yeah, I'm down with it.

[01:00:49] Alison: have, boy do I have some things for you.

[01:00:51] Mandy: Oh, really?

[01:00:52] Alison: Boy, do I have some things for you when we get there.

[01:00:55] Mandy: I am gonna be ready, yeah

[01:00:56] Alison: I have a few things for you. See? [01:01:00] Thank you, Emily, for

[01:01:00] Mandy: Okay.

[01:01:01] Alison: 30 seconds

[01:01:02] Emily: The. Bleh

[01:01:03] Alison: There's two rules in my house, guys. We don't ship shame and we don't kink shame.

[01:01:07] Emily: I'm not in your house.

[01:01:08] Mandy: Yeah.

[01:01:08] Emily: I'm in my house

[01:01:10] Alison: Your house, different rules. Well, to be fair, we came up with those rules when we lived together and we shared a

[01:01:15] Emily: That's true.

[01:01:15] Alison: So. But

[01:01:17] Emily: only there was a tunnel between the houses.

[01:01:20] Alison: I'm saying pocket universe. But no, RIP Patricia

[01:01:24] Emily: Yeah You, she served her narrative purpose.

[01:01:27] Alison: served your narrative purpose.

[01:01:29] Mandy: really did. Oh

[01:01:31] Alison: did. She served her narrative purpose and, you know

[01:01:35] Wrap-Up & Looking Ahead to the Finale

[01:01:35] Emily: Mm-hmm

[01:01:36] Alison: But yeah, we're about to speed on through to the finale. Yahoo.

[01:01:41] Emily: Yes. Episode 10, "A Whole New You." I'm excited because then it's season two, baby, and things

[01:01:50] Alison: Big brown eyes

[01:01:51] Emily: So many brown eyes

[01:01:53] Alison: So many big brown eyes. Big, it's the big brown eyes brigade.

[01:01:57] Emily: I am sorry that things will shift for [01:02:00] Mandy

[01:02:00] Alison: am, I am sorry that things will shift for you

[01:02:03] Mandy: I mean, right now, looking forward to Season 2, which maybe I shouldn't do until next week, I am definitely most interested in Athena and Hinn's friendship more so than either of their individual storylines. And knowing that it's not always a focus makes me kind of sad.

[01:02:21] Alison: Yeah.

[01:02:21] Mandy: that's, I guess I should say that's where I see the best chemistry.

[01:02:25] Alison: Yeah,

[01:02:25] Emily: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. They do. They

[01:02:27] Mandy: And so like when I'm watching them, I'm like definitely locked in, whereas some other scenes, like my, my mind can drift a little. I'm still not feeling it for Chimney, but he also has barely been there

[01:02:37] Emily: Yeah, he has

[01:02:38] Alison: For being, like, a main, he definitely hasn't really been

[01:02:41] Mandy: Yeah.

[01:02:42] Emily: Yeah, he has not.

[01:02:44] Mandy: And he got some rebar through the head, and then that was pretty much it.

[01:02:47] Alison: He got a cake.

[01:02:48] Mandy: That's true. He did, he got a cake with,

[01:02:49] Alison: up with his girlfriend.

[01:02:50] Mandy: with rebar through the head, so

[01:02:52] Alison: with Rebirth

[01:02:52] Mandy: Yeah

[01:02:52] Alison: a Head. He had a girlfriend and then she went away

[01:02:55] Emily: And he'll never experience consequences of it ever.

[01:02:59] Mandy: Hmm.

[01:02:59] Alison: Ever.

[01:02:59] Emily: [01:03:00] Yep

[01:03:00] Alison: I think that's one of the other things that, because she, Emily and I each have our bugaboos with 9-1-1, and,

[01:03:07] Emily: What?

[01:03:07] Alison: think you've never had a bugaboo with

[01:03:10] Emily: Not one

[01:03:11] Alison: Not one. I think, I don't know if it's your biggest bugaboo, but one of her biggest is that the 9-1-1, the 1-18 get injured all the time, and no one ever has any long-reaching consequence

[01:03:23] Emily: No.

[01:03:23] Alison: Ever.

[01:03:25] Emily: scars,

[01:03:25] Alison: once.

[01:03:26] Emily: no muscle aches, no limps, no, no re- no con- yeah, not a single consequence of the injuries inflicted upon them. Buck just got smashed in the head with a bowling ball.

[01:03:39] Alison: fine.

[01:03:40] Mandy: You don't think the, the CTE is gonna catch up with him one day?

[01:03:43] Emily: I would that is the least-- He just had a tracheotomy in the middle of a

[01:03:49] Mandy: Yeah.

[01:03:50] Emily: and he

[01:03:51] Mandy: Which

[01:03:51] Alison: antibiotics?

[01:03:52] Emily: fine

[01:03:53] Alison: Does Edwin Buckley finish a

[01:03:54] Mandy: Oh

[01:03:55] Alison: of antibiotics? Be

[01:03:56] Emily: Not with his ADHD, no.

[01:03:58] Alison: No.

[01:03:59] Emily: [01:04:00] No.

[01:04:00] Alison: That boy has never finished a course of antibiotics in his

[01:04:03] Emily: He's never finished a meal in his life

[01:04:06] Mandy: And yet he's driving the truck

[01:04:08] Emily: And yet

[01:04:08] Alison: driving the truck without guidance.

[01:04:10] Emily: I, the only thing he ever finishes is an orgasm.

[01:04:13] Mandy: Yeah

[01:04:15] Emily: Chimmy had fucking...

[01:04:16] Alison: doesn't put the condom

[01:04:17] Mandy: Yeah,

[01:04:17] Emily: he

[01:04:18] Mandy: exactly

[01:04:18] Emily: no condoms to be found 'cause he can't remember to put them on I was gonna say like, do you know how many children he must have? And then I don't wanna think about it.

[01:04:26] Mandy: You know

[01:04:26] Alison: think

[01:04:27] Emily: Bleh

[01:04:27] Alison: Yeah,

[01:04:28] Emily: yeah, the lack of

[01:04:29] Alison: it would

[01:04:30] Emily: consequences really fucking bothers me. Dirty rebar through the head and he didn't even have a swollen face. Like, I can't even

[01:04:37] Alison: Yeah. Dirty knife in the neck. No, no scar.

[01:04:41] Emily: No.

[01:04:41] Mandy: No scar

[01:04:42] Emily: no scar

[01:04:43] Alison: No scar. Like, just it's... Yeah, that's definitely a bugaboo you'll hear about, but it's okay. we love them anyway. But yes, we are so close. Ah.

[01:04:52] Emily: We're gonna do it. I'm very excited. I hope people enjoy

[01:04:55] Mandy: Yeah

[01:04:55] Emily: we enjoy doing it.

[01:04:58] Mandy: I also,

[01:04:59] Alison: having

[01:04:59] Mandy: [01:05:00] her mom dying was the end of what I remember about season one, so I'm like, "Wait, there's an entire episode left?"

[01:05:05] Emily: There's

[01:05:05] Alison: There is an entire episode

[01:05:07] Emily: yeah, there's just one more

[01:05:08] Alison: Yeah. And like, not to I mean, we're gonna spoil it a little bit. Like,

[01:05:13] Mandy: Mm-hmm.

[01:05:13] Alison: she doesn't come back for season

[01:05:14] Mandy: Yeah.

[01:05:15] Alison: so they have to write her

[01:05:17] Mandy: Yeah

[01:05:18] Alison: So, like, this episode is actually fairly heavily Abby,

[01:05:21] Emily: Mm-hmm.

[01:05:22] Alison: episode 10

[01:05:23] Mandy: Well, they did have to make up for no Abby last time

[01:05:26] Alison: They did. They had to make up

[01:05:27] Emily: that was rude.

[01:05:27] Alison: Abby in episode eight.

[01:05:28] Emily: Yep

[01:05:30] Alison: So, RIP Patricia

[01:05:32] Emily: Thanks for serving your role.

[01:05:33] Alison: The first of many in a long and illustrious line of characters who merely only serve the plot as plot devices. We love you, plot devices on 9-1-1.

[01:05:47] Emily: of them.

[01:05:47] Alison: service

[01:05:48] Emily: all right. Any last thoughts before we on with our day? The silence says no.

[01:05:53] Mandy: Yeah.

[01:05:54] Alison: No thoughts, head empty, sterile buck

[01:05:57] Mandy: Yes

[01:05:58] Emily: I wish it were so. [01:06:00] Ac- action... N- nope. No. No.

[01:06:03] Alison: That would solve all your problems, Emily

[01:06:05] Emily: It would. I was suddenly like, "Okay, here's what actually happened. He is sterile. There was a mix-up. That's not his kid. Problem solved."

[01:06:12] Alison: Problem solved.

[01:06:14] Emily: Cut, paste. It's gonna be fine. all right.

[01:06:18] Alison: gonna be

[01:06:18] Emily: Well,

[01:06:18] Alison: gonna, you're gonna be

[01:06:19] Emily: gonna be fine. Nothing's real. thank you for listening to this episode, nine years before that episode. will catch you on the next episode of "911 on the Rocks."
