9-1-1 on the Rocks: 1x10 — “A Whole New You” Recap: Season One Signing Off
We made it to the Season 1 finale of 9-1-1! This week on 9-1-1 on the Rocks, we’re talking 1x10, “A Whole New You,” an episode where everyone is asking some version of the same question: who are you when the life you built suddenly changes?
Abby has spent years disappearing into caring for her mother. Buck has spent ten episodes trying to become someone worth trusting. Bobby is finally beginning to imagine a future he actually wants to be alive for. And Athena Grant is about to walk into a restaurant looking so good that Bobby Nash never stood a chance.
Naturally, 9-1-1 explores all of this the only way 9-1-1 knows how to.
This episode, we’re talking:
🧠 A stroke that apparently comes with complimentary British slang, a psychic whose dead client is extremely inconveniently still alive, and Season 1 reminding us one last time that subtlety is for other television shows.
🐟 Buck discovering someone has been using his face to catfish women and realizing that changing yourself doesn’t automatically mean the people around you will stop seeing the person you used to be.
✈️ Abby grieving Patricia, recognizing how completely she lost herself in caregiving, and buying a one-way ticket to Dublin while Buck stands outside those airport doors after believing he finally found somewhere he belongs. Cool! Great! We’re fine!
🏍️ One of the bleakest calls of the season, Bobby finally cracking under the weight of the job, and Athena doing exactly what Bobby told Buck to do last week: stepping into the mess with him.
And somehow, that’s Season 1: ten episodes of grief, bad decisions, questionable emergency medicine, deeply weird rescues, and a group of people slowly becoming a family before any of them quite realize it.
We made it through the grungy, messy, horny little first season. Now bring on Season 2. We're ready to meet some important new faces.
xoxo,

911 on the Rocks - 1x10 - A Whole New You
[00:00:00] Welcome & Introductions
[00:00:00] Emily: Before we say something silly, hello. Welcome back to "911 on the Rocks," a "Fandom on the Rocks" podcast. I'm Emily.
[00:00:06] Mandy: I'm Mandy
[00:00:07] Alison: And I'm Allison
[00:00:08] Episode Synopsis & Credits
[00:00:08] Emily: this is season one, episode 10, "A Whole New You."
[00:00:12] Alison: I don't know if any of you beloved listeners have ever had this problem, where you just get on the phone with your friends and you're so excited to talk about stuff. But for the purposes of this particular exercise, we actually have to record
[00:00:27] Emily: Yes.
[00:00:28] Alison: before I can share it with you, and so it's an entire exercise in patience and like, "No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no," just because my friends are here and they're listening to me doesn't mean we're ready to talk about it.
[00:00:38] Alison: So I'm like, you know, duct taping my mouth shut
[00:00:41] Emily: Mm-hmm.
[00:00:45] Alison: the season one finale."
[00:00:47] Emily: This,
[00:00:48] Mandy: I had a,
[00:00:48] Emily: it
[00:00:49] Mandy: yeah, I had a bit of the same problem on the, the WhatsApp group that we have, 'cause I was like, "Oh, I really wanna react as I'm watching it, but I can't react as I'm watching it."
[00:00:58] Alison: I am so excited to [00:01:00] listen to what you have to say. I'm so excited
[00:01:02] Emily: This was
[00:01:03] Mandy: I have?
[00:01:03] Emily: I was
[00:01:04] Mandy: Yeah
[00:01:04] Emily: What's Mandy gonna say? Is she gonna be mad? Is she gonna stay?
[00:01:07] Mandy: I have thoughts, I have feelings. Yeah, I,
[00:01:11] Alison: I can't wait
[00:01:12] Mandy: I
[00:01:12] Emily: Well, this is the season one finale of "9-1-1." first responders are sent out to assist with a peculiar domestic disturbance, a tragic motorcycle crash, and an urgent situation at a psychic's place
[00:01:29] Alison: All of those are legally true.
[00:01:31] Emily: Legally true and
[00:01:32] Mandy: Ja
[00:01:33] Emily: nothing of the actual emotional core
[00:01:36] Mandy: Really not, yeah.
[00:01:37] Alison: But you know what?
[00:01:38] Mandy: related to the actual heart of the episode
[00:01:41] Emily: yeah
[00:01:41] Alison: like, I would still take these kinds of things. Like if, for in order to have this kind of, you know, synopsis, sorry, synapse was the word that was coming to me and I'm like, "That's not right."
[00:01:53] Emily: I mean, those happen in this.
[00:01:54] Alison: to have this kind of synopsis, you actually have to have calls.
[00:01:59] Emily: Yes
[00:01:59] Mandy: [00:02:00] Yeah
[00:02:00] Alison: so like I would love to be able to have enough calls in an episode to be able to have a synopsis like this, you know what I mean?
[00:02:07] Emily: Yes, exactly.
[00:02:08] Mandy: Ugh
[00:02:08] Alison: What do you mean you had three separate calls that you responded to in a single episode? What?
[00:02:13] Emily: their job as Los Angeles firefighters. before we continue, this episode was written by Ryan, Brad, and Tim
[00:02:21] Alison: The Unholy Trinity, part two
[00:02:24] Emily: Part two, and was directed by good friend Bradley Buecker.
[00:02:27] Mandy: Okay, so we got
[00:02:29] Emily: for this episode.
[00:02:30] Glee Connections
[00:02:30] Mandy: almost a full Glee squad, and yet,
[00:02:33] Emily: Exactly.
[00:02:34] Alison: We're
[00:02:34] Mandy: and yet this is,
[00:02:35] Emily: Yep
[00:02:35] Mandy: this is so unrelated to anything Glee that I have to almost give them props. Almost.
[00:02:42] Alison: Almost.
[00:02:43] Emily: Almost. There are no puppets involved.
[00:02:45] Mandy: Yeah.
[00:02:46] Emily: Not today, champ.
[00:02:48] Alison: There's still time, guys. There's still time for a Puppet Gas Leak episode
[00:02:52] Emily: Do not say that.
[00:02:54] Alison: want one so bad. How fun would that be?
[00:02:57] Emily: No.
[00:02:58] Alison: Yes.
[00:02:59] Emily: [00:03:00] Emotionally,
[00:03:01] Mandy: like, has there ever been any talk of, like, a Glee person guesting in then, like, a random musical episode?
[00:03:08] Emily: Mandy. Okay, well, for one, Chimney was on Glee
[00:03:12] Mandy: Who was he? Oh, wait, I think I know this.
[00:03:14] Alison: He, he was the world's worst gynecologist in season one.
[00:03:19] Mandy: Oh, okay.
[00:03:21] Emily: Yes.
[00:03:21] Mandy: Okay.
[00:03:22] Alison: gynecologist
[00:03:23] Emily: see
[00:03:24] Emily: Max Adler will show up, in a guest role.
[00:03:27] Mandy: God, he's in everything
[00:03:28] Emily: is in everything. Yes
[00:03:30] Alison: is another Glee performer who will show up in this show. I will not tell you who it is,
[00:03:36] Emily: No.
[00:03:37] Alison: I am,
[00:03:38] Emily: Yes.
[00:03:38] Alison: Emily's mouth
[00:03:39] Emily: Ca-
[00:03:40] Alison: right now.
[00:03:40] Emily: cannot be spoiled.
[00:03:42] Alison: Stop
[00:03:42] Emily: but it
[00:03:43] Mandy: Is it Grant? Like the Emily comment makes me think it's Grant.
[00:03:46] Alison: it's wonderful.
[00:03:47] Emily: It's...
[00:03:47] Alison: just, we'll get there when we get there
[00:03:49] Mandy: Okay, okay
[00:03:50] Emily: I would, it is, because it's not Grant, it's better.
[00:03:54] Mandy: Hmm.
[00:03:54] Alison: Correct. It's actually better.
[00:03:55] Mandy: Okay.
[00:03:56] Emily: better, yeah.
[00:03:57] Mandy: I'm intrigued, but I'm not gonna look it up 'cause I [00:04:00] want the... I'm in staying unspoiled territory now
[00:04:04] Alison: No,
[00:04:04] Emily: Fans, fans who are not me, propose a musical episode because of Tracie Thoms
[00:04:12] Alison: And,
[00:04:13] Mandy: Oh, I mean, that would be badass.
[00:04:14] Emily: who,
[00:04:15] Mandy: Yeah
[00:04:15] Mandy: I do not want a musical episode in my Wee Woo show because thank you. Grey's Anatomy did it. It was embarrassing. I would like, now that you've reminded me of Tracy Toms, like, i- can they give her a, like, karaoke night or something at least?
[00:04:35] Emily: So why
[00:04:35] Mandy: That's in the realm of realistic.
[00:04:37] Emily: the show?
[00:04:37] Mandy: Okay
[00:04:38] Musical Episode & AO3
[00:04:38] Alison: the scholars on AO3 have given Tracy Toms many opportunities to sing.
[00:04:43] Emily: Yes.
[00:04:44] Mandy: I'm just procrastinating 'cause I don't wanna talk about the episode,
[00:04:47] Alison: Aw.
[00:04:48] Mandy: Then it's over.
[00:04:49] Emily: Is it ever really over when AO3 exists and rewatches happen?
[00:04:54] Mandy: Y- yes, because I'm guessing there's not a thriving Buck/Abby community out there.[00:05:00]
[00:05:00] Alison: You
[00:05:00] Mandy: I feel like they've been overshadowed a little
[00:05:03] Emily: You could start w- you could start one, but I fear your safety
[00:05:08] Mandy: yeah, yeah.
[00:05:10] Alison: Just for fun, I'm going to d- take a, take a little look-see in the tag here
[00:05:15] Emily: You type in Buck Abbey and your computer just explodes.
[00:05:19] Mandy: It just redirects you to Buddy
[00:05:21] Emily: Yeah. Are you... like Clippy pops up, is that what you
[00:05:24] Mandy: Yeah.
[00:05:25] Alison: Is that what you mean? Relationships. Evan
[00:05:28] Mandy: The thing is you gotta OTP Truitt too, because otherwise it's just gonna be, like, a secondary pairing to a different main ship
[00:05:38] Emily: Yeah. Then it's just cheating
[00:05:40] Mandy: Yeah
[00:05:41] Alison: Really didn't think so
[00:05:42] Emily: Well, we have-
[00:05:44] Alison: There's, there's... I, I haven't figured out the OTP true part yet, but, the Buck Abbey is 284 works.
[00:05:53] Mandy: Ooh, that's sad.
[00:05:55] Emily: You can
[00:05:55] Mandy: That's sad
[00:05:57] Alison: the first from January [00:06:00] 20th, 2018
[00:06:01] Emily: That makes
[00:06:01] Mandy: Let's see if I OTP true it. I type in Buck Abby in AO3, and the first result, 'cause I didn't, like, I didn't click the ship tag, but the first result has Abby Clark bashing as the tag.
[00:06:13] Alison: Oh,
[00:06:14] Mandy: Yeah, if you OTP true it so that it's,
[00:06:16] Alison: like...
[00:06:17] Mandy: so it's only Buck Abby fics, 55.
[00:06:21] Alison: Oh.
[00:06:22] Mandy: was in June of 2025
[00:06:24] Emily: Oh, okay
[00:06:26] Alison: So see, there's somebody still out there
[00:06:28] Mandy: Like a year ago.
[00:06:29] Alison: Th- then that's still somebody out there.
[00:06:32] Mandy: It's not in English.
[00:06:34] Emily: Okay. Well, is
[00:06:36] Mandy: It's
[00:06:36] Emily: new best friend?
[00:06:37] Alison: Yeah, new best friend
[00:06:38] Mandy: New best friend. I'm gonna have to learn, I'm ignorant white person, Japanese, Chinese... Actually, I think this is, like, Chinese or Korean to, to read this, but we'll get there.
[00:06:48] Alison: We'll get there.
[00:06:49] Mandy: Yeah. I have a goal now
[00:06:51] Emily: Well, the only way...
[00:06:53] Alison: person to lift it back up.
[00:06:55] Emily: Yes
[00:06:56] Alison: It's a canon ship and it's also somehow a rare pair
[00:06:59] Mandy: [00:07:00] Yeah. That is a marvel
[00:07:01] Emily: That is. well, the only way out is through, so
[00:07:06] Mandy: Mm-kay
[00:07:06] The Funeral & Abby's Journey
[00:07:06] Emily: We begin with a funeral.
[00:07:10] Alison: I gotta say, I loved this opening. The sound clip from the last episode focusing on Abby in the graveyard at the funeral, I thought it was beautiful
[00:07:21] Emily: It was a nice little tribute. have Abby's voiceover talking about who are you? Are you the same person you've always been after the death of a parent? you know, obviously they are trying to set something up here,
[00:07:34] Mandy: Yeah
[00:07:36] Emily: throughout the entire episode. We can discuss if it was, successful. This is also Buck's second funeral in a season, in a 10-episode season, so that's, that's weird.
[00:07:48] Alison: Yeah. Ugh, yeah. Yeah
[00:07:49] Emily: but it was very nice. It was a nice way to, to round out Patricia's death
[00:07:55] Alison: And Buck and Abby were real freaking cute at this funeral.
[00:07:59] Mandy: They [00:08:00] were
[00:08:00] Alison: They were
[00:08:01] Emily: Yeah. And, you know, they go back to the house and Abby talks about, you know, if before she would've said that she was losing her mother for years, but really she's the one who's been disappearing in slow motion, which is the thesis statement of the episode, and for her, the season,
[00:08:24] Alison: Yeah.
[00:08:24] Emily: which will be our confounding problem for her.
[00:08:27] Alison: Yeah, and she's just sort of slowly but surely just, just kind of disintegrating in front of us
[00:08:32] Emily: Mm-hmm. And she tries to fix it. She starts cleaning up the house, she gets rid of the hospital bed. She's getting rid of not every, sign that Patricia was there, but a lot
[00:08:44] Mandy: A lot. Yeah
[00:08:47] Emily: puts the dining room back together, which is where her mom's hospital setup was, while saying that her mom has become very clear to her, but her own reflection is hazy.
[00:08:56] Emily: They're really laying the groundwork in this episode. It's [00:09:00] really thick.
[00:09:01] Mandy: Like,
[00:09:02] Alison: who I am anymore.
[00:09:04] Mandy: like really beating it with a sledgehammer
[00:09:06] Emily: Yeah, just in case it's gonna be confusing as to how this episode ends. and then she starts to cry, which makes absolute sense. And Buck does his very common, "I got you."
[00:09:17] Alison: ugh, Evan Buckley, love of my life. I gotcha, I gotcha, I
[00:09:20] Emily: Mm-hmm. Not the first time you will tell someone this.
[00:09:23] Alison: Not the first time, not the last. I gotcha,
[00:09:26] Emily: yep.
[00:09:27] Alison: Yeah, you do
[00:09:27] Emily: so we've got our opening, and we have Abby's, problem with a capital P that needs to be solved. yeah. wonder how it will end.
[00:09:36] Alison: So f- at this point, knowing how the episode ends, like how do you guys feel that they're setting it up? Does it come out of nowhere? Is this a surprise? Should this be a surprise? Or like is this pretty clear narratively?
[00:09:49] Mandy: I think it's pretty clear narratively.
[00:09:51] Emily: It's
[00:09:52] Mandy: Like,
[00:09:53] Emily: I think if this were a 22-episode season, it would be stronger.
[00:09:59] Mandy: Yes, I
[00:09:59] Alison: I
[00:09:59] Mandy: think [00:10:00] that would've been a lot better. Also, I feel like the Buck and Abby relationship really just, like, hit fast-forward in the past, like, I was gonna say three episodes, but she's not even in one of them.
[00:10:13] Alison: Right.
[00:10:13] Mandy: So they did a lot of, like, slow burn building for the start of the relationship, and then it just kinda, like, fast-forwards.
[00:10:21] Mandy: I would've loved to have seen more development
[00:10:23] Alison: Yeah.
[00:10:24] Mandy: of them along the way. I mean, it would've hurt more obviously, but I guess I'm a masochist
[00:10:29] Alison: I
[00:10:30] Emily: I mean...
[00:10:30] Mandy: 'cause I still would've, like, seen it
[00:10:31] Alison: on what you've been talking about the last few episodes, Abby's been trying to, like, give him the slip for a couple episodes now.
[00:10:38] Mandy: Yeah
[00:10:39] Alison: to set you loose. I'm trying to set you free. Like, you don't need to be here in all my bullshit and all my baggage and all my whatever." Because, like, she just sees it as fun while he's getting really, really, really invested. and we see this later in the episode, but I agree with you. I think if it had been over 20 or 18 or 22 episodes, getting, like, a three or four episode arc of Buck [00:11:00] committing with a
[00:11:01] Emily: Mm-hmm.
[00:11:01] Alison: C, "Hey, do you wanna be my, my emergency contact?
[00:11:06] Alison: Hey, do you wanna move in? Hey," like, you know, just trying to really establish that tether and connection only for Abby to kind of back further and further and further away, I
[00:11:16] Mandy: Yeah, I would've loved to have seen a...
[00:11:18] Alison: It would hurt,
[00:11:19] Mandy: Yeah. We could've had like a can I leave a toothbrush here conversation or like, you know, some, some late night calls. We really don't get a lot of interaction between them that isn't centered on her mom or her mom's death
[00:11:35] Alison: Yeah.
[00:11:35] Emily: there's a comment from the brother of just like, "Oh, he's, he's moved in?" And even Abby's like, "I guess." You don't see...
[00:11:44] Alison: Yeah
[00:11:45] Alison: No, no.
[00:11:46] Emily: A- and she's n- right, and she's like, "No, not really. Not, no." And for Buck, he's like, "I guess I have. Is that okay?" And it, it do- they're clearly not on the same page. He want, he wants like s- three suitcases deep,[00:12:00]
[00:12:00] Alison: Yeah.
[00:12:00] Emily: she's like, "Oh, yeah, you are here a lot, aren't you?" Hmm. N- yeah. Stretching that
[00:12:06] Mandy: Like I
[00:12:06] Emily: over 10 episodes could've been really interesting of him getting further and further and further into a relationship that he thinks he's having, and she's just like there at all and fading into the distance
[00:12:18] Mandy: See, I do think that she cares for him a lot, and I think some more of the complexity of that, like, in a different place in a different time, like, this could have been really good. It's just, like, that was not the place or the time for her to
[00:12:31] Emily: Mm-hmm. Yeah
[00:12:33] Mandy: Having her kinda toy with being more invested would've been good too. But instead, like, she's invested, but at the first sign of like, "Oh, maybe he's cheating on me," she's just like, "All right, plane ticket, I'm out."
[00:12:46] Emily: dude,
[00:12:46] Mandy: I know we're, like, skipping ahead in the episode plot here, but
[00:12:49] Emily: Yeah, we c- when we get to that
[00:12:52] Mandy: Yeah
[00:12:54] Emily: that irritated me. That whole plot irritated me because
[00:12:57] Mandy: Yeah.
[00:12:58] Emily: episodes and you're like, "What are we doing here?"[00:13:00]
[00:13:00] Alison: What are you
[00:13:00] Mandy: Yeah
[00:13:01] Alison: for sure
[00:13:02] Emily: but I guess we can
[00:13:03] First Call: Domestic Dispute
[00:13:06] Emily: rewind to our first emergency call of, a couple not seeing each other? to figure out what the, the connecting thread is of this, this call.
[00:13:13] Emily: So a, we have one woman calling 911 saying her husband is going mental. She has locked herself in the loo. She has a British accent that is not quite a, a, joke. It's,
[00:13:29] Alison: definitely doesn't, it definitely sounds
[00:13:31] Emily: It sounds trained.
[00:13:33] Alison: yeah, it sounds strange.
[00:13:34] Mandy: Yeah
[00:13:34] Alison: word
[00:13:35] Emily: And then, then we have a second emergency call of a man calling 911 to say that there's something wrong with his wife, and then the two calls start to overlap to say that they're acting like a completely different person
[00:13:48] Alison: So that's kind of the theme of the calls for this episode. It's like, it's like a, I'm a whole new person. I'm a different person. I'm, how do I reinvent myself?
[00:13:57] Emily: Mm-hmm.
[00:13:58] Alison: we love a thematic episode.
[00:13:59] Emily: [00:14:00] Love a thematic episode. This one's not quite as, like, on your, in your face, on your nose, you know?
[00:14:05] Alison: but it definitely still follows a theme.
[00:14:07] Emily: It does
[00:14:08] Alison: There are variations on a theme, but it's still definitely on a theme
[00:14:11] Emily: It do- yes. Athena has arrived because there is some domestic dispute action happening here. the husband, David, is trying to get his wife out of the bathroom. He gets put in handcuffs immediately
[00:14:23] Alison: 727L30 responding.
[00:14:25] Emily: And he's got like a big cut on his forehead because his wife has thrown something at him. And when they finally get Diane? Out of, the wife out of the bathroom, she's just fully British, and she has the hiccups, and she says she's had a migraine
[00:14:41] Alison: It sounds like she's having a terrible day, honestly
[00:14:43] Emily: Sounds like a really shit day for her. Now, Bobby and Chim go get the husband's side of the story, and he's like, "Guys, that...
[00:14:51] Emily: She's not British. is not her voice, and she is from Brooklyn." Surprise
[00:14:57] Alison: I would have loved [00:15:00] to, just, just as an exercise, I would have loved to get the actress doing a Brooklyn accent doing a
[00:15:07] Mandy: Yeah.
[00:15:08] Alison: accent.
[00:15:08] Emily: Mm-hmm.
[00:15:10] Alison: Like, just where you can't hide the Brooklyn
[00:15:12] Emily: Yeah.
[00:15:13] Alison: from it, or just even, like, British slang in a Brooklyn
[00:15:17] Emily: In a
[00:15:17] Mandy: Yeah
[00:15:18] Alison: that would've been really fun
[00:15:19] Emily: 'Cause it is full, like, proper Downton Abbey. Like, it was
[00:15:24] Alison: It was a very formal,
[00:15:26] Emily: Mm-hmm.
[00:15:26] Alison: kind of accent
[00:15:28] Mandy: My, my very British wife was very amused by it and like, "That's a horrible accent." And then
[00:15:34] Emily: her take on the accent? 'Cause it sounded like someone doing an accent.
[00:15:37] Mandy: It was the language she was using apparently that was like not, not actually like what any normal person would sound like
[00:15:46] Emily: It sounded like you went
[00:15:47] Alison: that their resident Brit wasn't on set in the scene.
[00:15:51] Mandy: Oh, that's true. That's funny
[00:15:53] Emily: It did sound like someone went to Google and was like, "What is the British word for tea? What is the
[00:15:58] Mandy: Yeah
[00:15:59] Emily: [00:16:00] bathroom?" but Athena, Oh, so David? Yes, David says, like: "Listen, she woke up this morning and she started talking like this. We tried to go to the hospital and she said, 'No thank you.'" And, 727L30, Athena, says, "I think she is having a stroke."
[00:16:17] Alison: A woman learns that symptoms could be different.
[00:16:20] Emily: Yes. Thank you, Athena. Hiccups, chest pain, and then they ask Diane to stick her tongue out and it goes sideways
[00:16:28] Alison: What- when's your birthday? it's,
[00:16:29] Mandy: in April
[00:16:30] Emily: hmm. So I do like when the show kind of puts in a little bit of like, "Hey, a heart attack could be different for women. Hey, a stroke can be different for women." Just, you know, file that little nugget away and maybe it will help you down the line. Don't, you know, follow 911's chest compressions, but you know, So they're
[00:16:47] Mandy: Or, or their treatment of the stroke because, like, when I was reading about the episode afterwards, this is not how you treat a stroke
[00:16:53] Emily: They were like, "Get the TPA injection ready to help clear the
[00:16:56] Mandy: Yeah
[00:16:57] Emily: "Well, not here."
[00:16:58] Alison: Not here
[00:16:58] Mandy: No.
[00:16:59] Emily: [00:17:00] Like
[00:17:00] Mandy: do a little, not that I'm doubting Athena 'cause she's correct, but maybe do a little more, medical investigation first
[00:17:06] Emily: I was like, you could...
[00:17:07] Alison: you can do it in the bus. Like, come on,
[00:17:09] Mandy: Yeah. Yeah
[00:17:10] Alison: the ambulance. Let's go to the hospital, like t- chop chop.
[00:17:12] Mandy: Like, we don't know. Okay, let's... All right. We're not gonna give her... Okay, move along. That's a lawsuit waiting to happen.
[00:17:19] Emily: a lawsuit waiting to happen
[00:17:21] Mandy: One, like, allergy to something they just, like, randomly give her and, and they're done
[00:17:25] Emily: Yep. Yeah, I was like, I... That was a lot, but I appreciated that they did a little
[00:17:32] Mandy: Yes.
[00:17:32] Emily: Like, we gotta move, but
[00:17:34] Mandy: Yeah
[00:17:34] Emily: stairwell. Like, I don't even think they carry around TPA in that bag.
[00:17:39] Alison: Probably not.
[00:17:40] Emily: but I do like Bobby giving Athena the credit for the
[00:17:43] Mandy: Yes.
[00:17:44] Alison: Yes
[00:17:45] Emily: Because we
[00:17:46] Mandy: her props.
[00:17:46] Emily: building
[00:17:47] Mandy: Hmm
[00:17:49] Emily: little something
[00:17:50] Alison: A little something. Look at that man who honors and acknowledges a woman.
[00:17:55] Emily: A strong, confident woman.
[00:17:56] Alison: a strong, confident,
[00:17:57] Emily: He,
[00:17:58] Alison: talented at her job woman.
[00:17:59] Emily: he [00:18:00] loves a strong, confident, talented woman.
[00:18:02] Mandy: Mm-hmm.
[00:18:02] Alison: story. So do we all
[00:18:04] Emily: And because two people are losing Abby, not
[00:18:07] Mandy: Oh, that's true.
[00:18:08] Alison: Aw, poor
[00:18:09] Emily: Barbara... So
[00:18:11] Mandy: really stand a chance.
[00:18:12] Alison: I do love Bobby is talking about, like, in the stroke, "Some people wake up from a coma and can speak Mandarin." And I was like, "Huh, how about that?
[00:18:21] Emily: No.
[00:18:22] Alison: if, I wonder if anyone has ever documented other abilities?"
[00:18:26] Emily: I wonder if they have put a pen...
[00:18:29] Alison: pulls up a new tab
[00:18:30] Emily: Well, that requires Teminir to be taking notes
[00:18:34] Alison: Y- somebody may have been taking notes, maybe?
[00:18:37] Emily: supervisor maybe.
[00:18:38] Alison: Somebody
[00:18:39] Emily: Well, you know, like Ryan Murphy has just a note of like white guys and then...
[00:18:45] Alison: tax,
[00:18:46] Mandy: Yeah
[00:18:47] Alison: tax.
[00:18:47] Emily: who can pay the nipple tax this season? so they go to Abby's house.
[00:18:51] Abby's House & Backstory
[00:18:51] Emily: We have to go back to Abby's house, and we've got Buck and his BFF Carla
[00:18:55] Alison: BFF Carla and Buck, I love them so much.
[00:18:58] Emily: so much. [00:19:00] Mm-mm.
[00:19:03] Alison: Carla
[00:19:04] Emily: Yes. It is. that way she's not just floating out in the ether by herself
[00:19:08] Alison: just kind of doing whatever. It's like, oh, no, no, Buck's been around for long enough that, like, everyone kind of knows each other
[00:19:14] Emily: Mm-hmm. they're going through Patricia's things. Abby doesn't wanna keep anything of her mom's. I would suggest when a parent dies, unless you are no contact, like, not throwing all those things away right away. I would suggest maybe just putting those things away for, like, six months before you go through
[00:19:30] Mandy: Yeah
[00:19:31] Emily: away. Just a hint. You're gonna want them later. Don't make rash decisions about throwing your parents' things away the moment they die. but they find a newspaper clipping of Abby, who apparently was a competitive swimmer and made the Olympic team And we
[00:19:48] Mandy: Hell yeah, Abby
[00:19:49] Emily: about this ever again. Just a little nugget of information about Abby Clark.
[00:19:52] Mandy: More things that I would have liked to have explored if we had more than 10 episodes.
[00:19:57] Emily: You just wanna see her in the pool.
[00:19:59] Mandy: I [00:20:00] absolutely just wanna see her in the pool
[00:20:01] Emily: Yeah.
[00:20:01] Alison: As do we all.
[00:20:03] Emily: Yeah. Doing a little lap swimming.
[00:20:05] Mandy: Yeah, that would have been nice
[00:20:06] Emily: like
[00:20:07] Alison: And we still haven't gotten that slow motion, somebody beautiful and hot, like, in the pool and just, like, the slow-mo of them
[00:20:15] Emily: No.
[00:20:15] Alison: out of the pool.
[00:20:16] Emily: I know. Or the... Right.
[00:20:18] Alison: that yet. Let's go. It could've been Abby Clark in a
[00:20:21] Emily: Could have been.
[00:20:21] Alison: 22-episode season.
[00:20:23] Emily: Yeah.
[00:20:23] Mandy: I'm gonna choose to believe it would've been Abby Clark
[00:20:26] Emily: Yeah. That's true
[00:20:28] Alison: will be Abby Clark. We don't know. The show isn't finished yet.
[00:20:32] Mandy: This is true
[00:20:33] Emily: This is tragic.
[00:20:35] Alison: 11 opening, like the opening scene is just Abby Clark coming out of a pool being hot. Like awesome
[00:20:42] Mandy: I'm gonna start one of those campaigns that's like a Twitter account that's like, days since Abby Clark has stepped out of a pool, and just tag all of the writers in it. 'Cause that always
[00:20:45] Mandy: works, right? Annoying them on social media.
[00:20:48] Emily: Yeah, def- that definitely works. but this is where we see, Abby's brother Matthew being like, "So the boy toy is still here. Cool." And I don't think we ever see Matthew again
[00:20:59] Alison: [00:21:00] Bye
[00:21:01] Emily: Bye Abby's entire family. Thank you for being a part of this, this show.
[00:21:05] Mandy: Had we seen him before this?
[00:21:07] Emily: Yes.
[00:21:09] Mandy: Okay
[00:21:09] Emily: briefly in the episode where they talk about, putting Patricia in a
[00:21:15] Mandy: Oh, okay. He did not, stick out in my mind apparently
[00:21:19] Emily: No. It, and it, they kinda make it sound like Abby had just taken on all of the responsibility of caring
[00:21:26] Mandy: Yeah
[00:21:27] Emily: and Matthew was like, "Why would we do this? You could put her in a home." So their
[00:21:30] Mandy: Okay.
[00:21:31] Emily: is not fraught, but, know,
[00:21:35] Mandy: Yeah
[00:21:36] Emily: sibling. but yes, this is Abby's like, "Yeah, Buck doesn't live here.
[00:21:40] Emily: He's just here a lot," which might be foreshadowing, but I'm not sure. At this stage in the show, I'm just not sure how much of any of the characters' backstories are set in stone
[00:21:53] Alison: Even though they did it on purpose, they should be set in stone, but
[00:21:58] Emily: Yeah. Like, there's things [00:22:00] about Buck where I'm like, does that exist yet or no?" Or I don't... Yeah. So I don't know.
[00:22:05] Alison: It could be. It, they could very well have been like, "Okay, I guess that makes sense."
[00:22:09] Emily: yeah. but then
[00:22:10] Bobby's Dating Profile
[00:22:10] Emily: we get to see Bobert
[00:22:12] Alison: Bobert Nash, the most handsome man on earth.
[00:22:15] Emily: I mean, he's looking quite handsome. He's going into
[00:22:18] Mandy: Is, yeah
[00:22:19] Emily: the station bathroom, which I think is the only time we have seen the station bathroom.
[00:22:24] Alison: Correct. This is the only time we see the station bathroom,
[00:22:27] Emily: Which
[00:22:28] Alison: it is one of my favorite places in the station.
[00:22:31] Emily: Well, it gets used widely. Yes, it is. it-- I don't know that it's functional for, like, 20 people on shift.
[00:22:39] Alison: It's not, but it is definitely used by the scholars
[00:22:42] Emily: It is used by the scholars for sure. he is checking himself out in the mirror, doing a little hair, and then taking some bathroom selfies.
[00:22:50] Mandy: Get it, Bobby
[00:22:52] Emily: Get it, Bobby. And then, you know, doing a little something, something on a laptop until Hen and Chim walk in, and he, you know, very [00:23:00] calmly closes the laptop.
[00:23:03] Alison: Clong.
[00:23:04] Emily: he slams that bad boy shut, which obviously makes everyone around you suspicious of what kind of porn you're looking at
[00:23:10] Alison: What
[00:23:10] Mandy: very conspicuous. Yeah. That, that's, that's not how you go incognito at all
[00:23:16] Emily: You never slam it. You just go to another tab. What are we doing?
[00:23:20] Alison: Open new
[00:23:21] Mandy: B-
[00:23:22] Alison: Robert.
[00:23:22] Emily: Yes, open
[00:23:23] Mandy: Bobby in general, he's not very good at keeping things on the down low. Like, even his tragic backstory, like, seems to come out fairly quickly.
[00:23:32] Alison: does.
[00:23:32] Mandy: He doesn't really keep things- Yeah
[00:23:35] Emily: No, and he's got this book that he is just openly working at, in the middle of the kitchen. He's like, "This is
[00:23:40] Mandy: Yeah.
[00:23:40] Emily: secret, but I'm gonna have it out in the open all the time."
[00:23:43] Alison: is my secret book. It, you've, you... Just because it's out in front of you doesn't mean you can look at it.
[00:23:48] Emily: Yeah.
[00:23:49] Alison: than that.
[00:23:49] Emily: Don't look at my secrets that I have in my back pocket all the time,
[00:23:53] Mandy: Yeah.
[00:23:53] Emily: secret book.
[00:23:54] Alison: guy who wants to be overly honest. It's that Midwestern
[00:23:58] Emily: Yeah. He's just walking [00:24:00] around like, "Please don't ask me about my secrets."
[00:24:02] Alison: Please ask me about my secrets. I wanna talk about it so bad.
[00:24:05] Emily: That's why he
[00:24:06] Mandy: It's like his,
[00:24:06] Emily: all the time.
[00:24:07] Alison: Yeah, he's gonna talk to Father Firework about it.
[00:24:10] Emily: Just gotta
[00:24:11] Mandy: I bet Bobby in the like late '90s, early 2000s era, I bet his AOL away messages went hard
[00:24:18] Emily: Oh, I bet. Yeah. I bet he was also writing in the post secret
[00:24:22] Mandy: Oh God, yeah.
[00:24:24] Alison: Oh
[00:24:24] Emily: like sending in,
[00:24:25] Alison: God.
[00:24:27] Emily: "I killed my wife."
[00:24:28] Alison: percent send it into Post Secret.
[00:24:30] Emily: "I killed my wife and kids." And people are just like, "Did you see this fucking post secret?"
[00:24:35] Alison: God
[00:24:36] Emily: Anyway, Chim obviously gets the laptop from him, and he is on Romancing
[00:24:40] Alison: R-
[00:24:41] Emily: the Unic- unicorn, romancingtheuniform.com.
[00:24:43] Alison: he is also a unicorn. He is
[00:24:45] Emily: Also,
[00:24:45] Alison: unique in every way.
[00:24:47] Emily: yes, yes, he is. and it's... He's gonna get back out into that dating world, or try to. Buck thinks that it's not gonna happen, and he could not be more of a dick in [00:25:00] this moment
[00:25:00] Alison: It is cheese. It is sweet, sweet cheese
[00:25:03] Emily: ju- the, the jokes that come out of here are not great. but he's like, "It's literally like you were frozen in ember in 1995." And he's like, "It's amber, not ember." saying something about like good flan is the bomb
[00:25:17] Alison: Yes. like flawed? Good flawed is
[00:25:20] Emily: The,
[00:25:20] Alison: okay?
[00:25:21] Emily: yeah, Buck really lays into him for his profile being bad because Buck is like 26
[00:25:27] Alison: Yeah.
[00:25:27] Emily: at this point.
[00:25:28] Alison: Buck is an aficionado of the online dating sphere.
[00:25:31] Emily: He is, which will be an issue.
[00:25:35] Alison: Also, in this moment, Chimney calls him Buckaroo,
[00:25:38] Emily: He does call him
[00:25:39] Mandy: Buckaroo
[00:25:39] Alison: and that makes me very happy.
[00:25:42] Emily: it does. I hate nicknames. You love them.
[00:25:45] Alison: I do.
[00:25:46] Emily: I,
[00:25:46] Alison: I love pet names, I love them
[00:25:48] Emily: I googled Buckaroo the other day because it bothered me that this was even a word. I also googled it because we know Chimney likes movie references. So there is [00:26:00] a 1984 movie called The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai, Banzai Across the 8th Dimension,
[00:26:07] Alison: Awesome
[00:26:07] Emily: starring Peter Weller, who is RoboCop, John Lithgow, Jeff Goldblum, Ellen Barkin, and Christopher Lloyd
[00:26:15] Alison: What a cast.
[00:26:17] Emily: Yeah. Yeah.
[00:26:18] Mandy: Nej
[00:26:18] Emily: Buckaroo Banzai? I'm not entirely sure. it's like a cheese... It's, it's an absolute, like, C movie maybe.
[00:26:27] Alison: Amazing
[00:26:28] Emily: adventurer, brain surgeon, rock musician Buckaroo Banzai and his crime-fighting team, the Hong Kong Cavaliers, must stop evil alien invaders from the eighth dimension who are planning to conquer Earth I mean,
[00:26:43] Alison: Chimney has absolutely hosted that as a movie night. I don't understand.
[00:26:47] Emily: so I mean, I can't say that this is why he calls Buck Buckaroo, but I hope it is
[00:26:53] Alison: hope it is. Wow.
[00:26:55] Emily: So I just, I wanted to bring this to the table we know Chimney likes his movie [00:27:00] references, and this was the first thing...
[00:27:02] Alison: Wikipedia
[00:27:03] Emily: I love Wikipedia. This is the first thing that came up when I googled Buckaroo. was like, gorgeous, brilliant.
[00:27:08] Emily: This cast, stacked for a movie I have never heard of. Yeah. Anyway, I'm glad I could bring this, to the table.
[00:27:19] Alison: you truly
[00:27:20] Emily: yeah, so they're making fun of, Bobby for his profile, Chim's like, "You should not be giving anyone dating advice." And Buck says, "I am the only one in a stable monogamous relationship right now
[00:27:32] Alison: And I love so badly how the, this is the family. This scene right here is such the family vibes. Like, Buck leaning over Hen and Chim, like the three of them as a little unit. I just, this is the banter. This is the love
[00:27:48] Emily: They're not quite the core four yet, but they're almost there
[00:27:51] Alison: They're almost there. It's just, it's so soft and I love it so much. but yeah, in this moment, Buckaroo Banzai over here is correct. and [00:28:00] he is currently the only one in the room who is in a stable, healthy, monogamous relationship.
[00:28:05] Emily: And he says that proof is, he's proof that change is possible
[00:28:09] The Catfishing Begins
[00:28:09] Emily: until woman storms into the station and the loft
[00:28:14] Alison: when they get all the way to the loft. It means you have to go all the way across the bay
[00:28:19] Emily: Yeah, up the stairs.
[00:28:20] Alison: stairs without being, like, stopped.
[00:28:22] Emily: Yeah.
[00:28:22] Alison: me,
[00:28:23] Emily: Can you just
[00:28:23] Alison: danger.
[00:28:24] Emily: walk into a fire station like this? I don't know.
[00:28:26] Alison: not
[00:28:26] Emily: And she's like, "What the hell, Evan Buckley?" And she goes, she just lays into him about being led on in this month-and-a-half long intimate relationship, nothing she's ever had before, and then he just disappears. And Buck is very confused.
[00:28:42] Alison: So are we all.
[00:28:44] Emily: So is everybody else. he's like, yeah, no, that's not me. I mean, it was me, but it's not me. I'm not that guy anymore." And then she fully slaps him across the face
[00:28:53] Alison: Yeah, I really like that they wait until the physical violence starts before they intervene
[00:28:58] Emily: Everyone else is like, what's going [00:29:00] on?"
[00:29:00] Alison: Maybe we
[00:29:01] Alison: should stop that, guys.
[00:29:03] Emily: And nobody believes him
[00:29:04] Alison: No. Yeah, and Hen's like, "Ugh, uh-huh, change is possible." Sure
[00:29:08] Emily: Mm-hmm. Everyone thinks he's just a womanizing dick,
[00:29:12] Alison: Sad
[00:29:13] Emily: that made me sad. And then I- they get a call, so he can't, like, continue to prove himself. Poor bug. So we have
[00:29:19] Athena & Michael
[00:29:22] Emily: Athena and Michael doing their little thing off to the side. The kids are gonna go away with dad for the weekend doing stuff. I don't know,
[00:29:27] Alison: Sad stuff
[00:29:28] Emily: dad stuff. And the kids again are like, "They're fine. They're going away. This is their dad." And Athena's the one who's like, they're not gonna be under my roof for the weekend."
[00:29:37] Alison: Athena, it, this is, this part is fine.
[00:29:41] Emily: This is fine.
[00:29:41] Alison: on vacation with their dad. This is fine. This is the literal same as if you were working on the big case and they were just, you weren't gonna be home, so they were gonna go on a hotel staycation.
[00:29:52] Emily: Yeah,
[00:29:52] Mandy: Yeah, I was,
[00:29:53] Alison: It's the same
[00:29:53] Mandy: I was a little confused as to whether, like, based on her reaction, like, is this, like, the start of, like, a joint [00:30:00] custody thing where, like, she's gonna lose them for, like, a week at a time? Because if it's just a weekend, that did seem like a little bit of an overreaction, because surely her, like, not small children have had, like, weekends away before.
[00:30:16] Alison: Yeah,
[00:30:17] Emily: really
[00:30:18] Mandy: Or,
[00:30:18] Emily: the first time.
[00:30:19] Alison: but yeah,
[00:30:20] Mandy: yeah, it's, it
[00:30:21] Alison: but it
[00:30:22] Emily: Yeah,
[00:30:22] Mandy: Mae's like, what,
[00:30:23] Alison: It,
[00:30:24] Mandy: 14, 15? How old is Mae supposed to be?
[00:30:27] Emily: Who could say?
[00:30:29] Mandy: Oh, is that one of those things that just, like, gets changed?
[00:30:32] Mandy: Yeah.
[00:30:33] Alison: early
[00:30:34] Emily: high school.
[00:30:35] Alison: Yeah, early high school.
[00:30:36] Mandy: I guess unless Athena's one of those parents who's like, "I don't trust anyone else," which maybe she is, so like therefore you can't stay over anywhere else
[00:30:44] Emily: I don't, I, this, it definitely felt like a scene that maybe needed more context around it
[00:30:50] Alison: Yeah, maybe it got cut, maybe they had different plans.
[00:30:54] Emily: he also says, Michael says like, "Don't worry, Glenn's not gonna be there." And I wanted to be like, "So what if he is?"[00:31:00]
[00:31:00] Mandy: Yeah. That- Yeah
[00:31:02] Emily: I don't know what that whole situation is like when kids are staying with someone else. Like, I don't, I don't know. but yeah, it definitely felt like a little bit of an overreaction to send your kids off with dad for a weekend.
[00:31:12] Alison: It,
[00:31:13] Emily: I don't know
[00:31:13] Alison: to me too, but I have to believe that maybe there was some context there that we were
[00:31:17] Emily: Yeah. But Mike, I liked Michael being very like, "This is how we become better people."
[00:31:23] Alison: Yeah,
[00:31:23] Emily: This...
[00:31:24] Alison: gonna be fine. We're gonna be fine.
[00:31:26] Emily: Yeah. This is how we become our authentic selves, which is part of the theme of the episode
[00:31:32] Alison: We're gonna be whole new uses
[00:31:34] Emily: We're gonna be better together apart together. Let those babies go. so
[00:31:39] Hen & Karen / The Psychic
[00:31:39] Emily: we have another emergency.
[00:31:40] Emily: This one is in progress. Hen and Chim are talking about the and Karen situation, which is still ongoing. And Chim, I didn't love here because he's like, "Listen, Karen's gonna come around. You were possessed. You were someone else. It was the full moon, whatever."
[00:31:58] Alison: No.
[00:31:58] Emily: that's not how that [00:32:00] works
[00:32:00] Alison: But then Hen is like, "No, it wasn't anything. It wasn't a mistake, it was a choice.
[00:32:04] Emily: Mm-hmm. So at least she had that going for her
[00:32:09] Alison: Yeah, at least she understands that part
[00:32:11] Emily: But she does talk about, you know, not mirroring, but kind of mirroring, Abby of maybe who am I and maybe who I am with Karen is the, is pretending. I want to be with her. I love her. I'm having a crisis, but who am I?
[00:32:27] Alison: That's such a sad and scary thought
[00:32:30] Emily: What kind of person am I? Am I really who I am with Eva? Like, is that who I am? I, I don't know, Hen. That, that's a you question
[00:32:38] Alison: Hen, that's a you
[00:32:40] Emily: That's a you question, and you are a fictional character, so I can't answer that for you.
[00:32:43] Alison: I wish I could.
[00:32:45] Emily: Yeah.
[00:32:45] Alison: save you from this question.
[00:32:47] Emily: But they are out of psychics, maybe the answers are within.
[00:32:51] Alison: Easy, it's just right there.
[00:32:52] Emily: Have you ever been to a psychic?
[00:32:54] Alison: No
[00:32:55] Emily: Do you
[00:32:56] Mandy: I have not, but my roommate used to. My roommate used to go to [00:33:00] psychics. She fully bought into it.
[00:33:04] Emily: Yeah.
[00:33:04] Mandy: Me, not so much at all
[00:33:08] Kyle: The Not-Dead Guy
[00:33:08] Emily: Okay, so we have a victim.
[00:33:10] Alison: think he's fine,
[00:33:11] Emily: Well, yeah, he's,
[00:33:13] Alison: but I,
[00:33:13] Emily: he's fine
[00:33:14] Alison: the show is full of exquisitely beautiful
[00:33:17] Emily: I know.
[00:33:17] Alison: regularly beautiful people look mid
[00:33:20] Emily: I know that's gotta be rough coming in as an extra surrounded by some of these people.
[00:33:24] Alison: Like all of the women that are coming like up to buck for the catfishing plot line in this,
[00:33:30] Emily: Or models
[00:33:31] Alison: I'm like, you're stunningly beautiful, and unfortunately you're standing next to Connie Britton.
[00:33:36] Emily: Yeah.
[00:33:36] Mandy: Yeah.
[00:33:37] Emily: Angela Bassett.
[00:33:38] Alison: and Angela Bassett
[00:33:40] Emily: Yeah.
[00:33:40] Alison: Hinds. I'm very sorry. And also,
[00:33:43] Emily: Yeah. Mm-hmm
[00:33:44] Alison: stunningly beautiful, and you're standing next to some of the most beautiful women in the world.
[00:33:48] Alison: Like, I'm very sorry
[00:33:50] Emily: Like,
[00:33:50] Alison: comparison.
[00:33:51] Emily: sorry. okay, sorry to our victim. We are coming back to you. Kyle has been pronounced dead. Unfortunately for him, he doesn't wanna be.
[00:33:59] Alison: [00:34:00] Poor
[00:34:00] Emily: And he is getting zipped up into a body bag, and he's like, "No, no, no, no, no, don't do that. I am not dead."
[00:34:06] Alison: is giving me, like, Lost flashbacks and I can't handle it. Yeah.
[00:34:11] Emily: yes. Paulo and what was her name? I'll think of it. I won't think of it, but it's something. The two, the most hated people on Lost.
[00:34:18] Alison: Yes
[00:34:18] Emily: that's right. So we'll come back to him because we have the second sort of victim, she's fine, is the psychic, who's like, "I don't know what happened," which is ironic 'cause she's the psychic.
[00:34:30] Emily: "He just
[00:34:31] Alison: the psychic.
[00:34:32] Emily: over. I'd read his, his palm, and his lifeline was so long." Now, concerningly, Jim has his sunglasses on inside, so I don't know what he's looking at.
[00:34:42] Alison: No idea
[00:34:43] Emily: and she's like, "I can give you guys a quick reading." No, thank you
[00:34:46] Alison: is once again not having it.
[00:34:48] Emily: He hasn't having it. Now, we're gonna stick with Kyle because he is in the morgue.
[00:34:52] Emily: He is laid out on the slab. for the decency of Fox, he is wearing his boxer shorts, which is funny.
[00:34:59] Alison: Yeah, 'cause [00:35:00] it's definitely not what would be happening in the morgue.
[00:35:02] Emily: And now, despite Los Angeles having a lot of deaths and morgues being backed up, he is already about to get an autopsy, which is not what would happen
[00:35:11] Alison: Same day. He would've been stuck in the freezer for some time
[00:35:15] Emily: For a while. and he is trying to wake himself up because he is not dead. And the mortician, or would this be a mortician or is this a morgue? The coroner. The coroner,
[00:35:24] Alison: Corner.
[00:35:25] Emily: is about to... Well, they're already with the bone saw and not a scalpel, which is very confusing. I don't know what's happening other than cinema.
[00:35:36] Alison: Cinema
[00:35:37] Emily: so he's about to get cut open and Kyle finally, like, throws an arm up, scares the shit out of the, the, the coroner obviously, who
[00:35:45] Alison: yeah.
[00:35:46] Emily: passes out, cuts his thigh open with the saw,
[00:35:49] Alison: the bone saw, yeah
[00:35:50] Alison: which again, I think probably turns off once you let go of it. I, who cares? It's just buzzing on the floor.
[00:35:56] Emily: Just buzzing on the floor, and Kyle's like, "Well, I should probably call [00:36:00] again."
[00:36:01] Alison: Love that he does. Thank you for showing up for
[00:36:04] Emily: Yes
[00:36:05] Alison: for your guy there
[00:36:06] Emily: and Chim show up, probably because they were still on the scene given how quickly this all happened, and they're like, "You're the dead guy."
[00:36:15] Alison: Sure am.
[00:36:15] Emily: "Sure, sure am." Now the autopsy tech is gonna be okay. will cut. Kyle, our good friend Kyle, he explains that he has narcolepsy and cataplexy, which sounds like it sucks because this has happened like three other times. he doesn't wear a fucking medical bracelet because he doesn't want people to know
[00:36:35] Alison: That sounds terrible and terrifying for literally everybody involved.
[00:36:40] Emily: Yeah, this sounds stupid of him.
[00:36:43] Alison: Buddy
[00:36:44] Mandy: yes
[00:36:45] Emily: And it's because every time he dies, he says he wakes up as a completely different person, and he bec- he's, like, reminded of how precious life is
[00:36:54] Mandy: I feel like if you want a near-death experience, just go skydiving. Don't, [00:37:00] you know, come, like, eye to eye with a bone saw
[00:37:03] Emily: No.
[00:37:04] Alison: Yeah,
[00:37:05] Emily: and potentially hurt other people.
[00:37:06] Alison: Idaho as the bone saw.
[00:37:07] Emily: Also, they had a movie about this called "Flatliners." Like, you don't have to
[00:37:11] Mandy: Yeah, they did. That was like the first thing I thought of. I was like, "Wait, I've seen this before."
[00:37:15] Emily: Yeah, the Rat Pack did this. You don't have to, you don't have to do this. But yeah, and he's like, "Death becomes me." Like, okay bro. It was... N-
[00:37:22] Alison: right.
[00:37:23] Emily: you're annoying.
[00:37:25] Alison: All right there, Marlon Brando, you're doing all right.
[00:37:27] Emily: been kind of funny
[00:37:28] Mandy: I,
[00:37:28] Emily: this guy again
[00:37:29] Alison: It would be.
[00:37:30] Mandy: I thought the tattoo idea was fantastic though.
[00:37:33] Alison: Yeah.
[00:37:34] Mandy: that's what he should do. And you know what? He can have it, like, you know, center of his chest so that he gets the full experience right up until the morgue
[00:37:41] Alison: Yeah
[00:37:42] Mandy: when they're about to cut and they're like, "Oh, wait, I read the fine print."
[00:37:45] Emily: Just give him a little poke just to make sure.
[00:37:47] Alison: Boop
[00:37:48] Alison: boop. Kai, it sounds like a, sounds like a sitcom. Kyle the not dead
[00:37:55] Emily: Not that guy. And I guess he just continues on with his day after this? [00:38:00] I don't know
[00:38:00] Alison: Yeah. Just hanging out.
[00:38:02] Emily: what happened to his
[00:38:03] Alison: alive
[00:38:03] Emily: clothes. Now who is he now? 'Cause he says he wakes up a different person every time, so who is Kyle now? Is he an accountant now?
[00:38:11] Alison: I don't know. Does he have to go back to school?
[00:38:13] Emily: I don't know.
[00:38:14] Alison: I also don't know.
[00:38:15] Emily: Does he wake up with new skills every time?
[00:38:18] Alison: Can he speak Mandarin now?
[00:38:20] Emily: Maybe.
[00:38:21] Alison: I hope so.
[00:38:22] Emily: Maybe.
[00:38:23] Alison: Maybe he'll learn to play poker
[00:38:24] Emily: Maybe. so we also have
[00:38:27] Abby & Carla / Ireland
[00:38:29] Emily: Abby and Carla having a little chit-chat because they are also friends.
[00:38:31] Alison: Yes,
[00:38:32] Emily: And
[00:38:32] Alison: so much
[00:38:33] Emily: Carla is like, "Hey, are you going on a trip?" Because Abby has some passports out because she allegedly has to send her mom's passport back, to DHS?
[00:38:46] Emily: I don't remember.
[00:38:47] Alison: Whoever it is that you send passports back to.
[00:38:49] Emily: I did not do this with my dad's. I think we just punched a hole in it. I can't... Or maybe we did and it came back to us with holes punched in it. I don't remember.
[00:38:56] Alison: I don't know
[00:38:57] Emily: and they talk about how [00:39:00] Patricia never traveled. She married young. she really only went to Mexico, but she always wanted to go to Ireland. Now you can tell they're Irish because she has red hair
[00:39:10] Alison: Yeah, I guess
[00:39:11] Mandy: yeah
[00:39:12] Emily: but you know, we're laying some groundwork here. We're putting down some signposts. And Abby gives Carla some of her mom's jewelry as a gift, and Carla's like, "I did always feel like part of this family."
[00:39:25] Alison: That's lovely.
[00:39:26] Emily: It is But you know, we're putting signposts, we're leaving clues, we're dropping breadcrumbs because we have a 42-minute episode to wrap up several plot lines
[00:39:36] Alison: unfortunately, the only person not picking up the little crummies is Evan Buckley
[00:39:41] Mandy: Unfortunately,
[00:39:42] Emily: Buck Buckley, and they
[00:39:44] Mandy: buckeroo
[00:39:45] Emily: a date. Oh, well I guess we have Hen and Karen first.
[00:39:49] Alison: Aw. Oh.
[00:39:50] Hen & Karen at the Grocery Store
[00:39:50] Emily: Quick little Hen stalks Karen at the grocery store
[00:39:53] Alison: Yeah, quick little head starts Karen at the grocery store. I admire you wanting to get back with your wife, I do. Maybe [00:40:00] don't stalk her at the grocery store.
[00:40:01] Mandy: No, if I were Karen, I would have been so pissed.
[00:40:03] Emily: Yeah.
[00:40:04] Mandy: No
[00:40:05] Alison: I'm like-
[00:40:06] Emily: dark. She catches Odri with the car. I was like, "Whoa."
[00:40:10] Alison: matter how close we are or how likely it is that I'm gonna recognize you in the dark when I'm not expecting you, do not sneak up on me in a parking lot. I would punch my own mother in the parking
[00:40:23] Emily: Yeah.
[00:40:23] Alison: dark. Like, girl
[00:40:26] Emily: Scary. Karen hasn't been returning phone calls, she had to stalk her in the parking lot. And Karen's like, "All right, fine. Say your shit. You have five minutes."
[00:40:35] Alison: And the entire time, as much as I love Hen, I was Team Karen this entire time.
[00:40:40] Emily: yeah
[00:40:40] Alison: Just like, my love, you messed up bad, and she actually doesn't have to give you the time of day. You're gonna give her the time and space she needs and she's asked for, like, be cool with that
[00:40:52] Emily: Yeah, and Karen's like, "I can't. Bye." She does accept that Hen loves her.
[00:40:58] Alison: heartbroken. And like, [00:41:00] yeah.
[00:41:00] Emily: Well, she did fuck up.
[00:41:01] Alison: But she did kinda fuck up pretty bad.
[00:41:05] Emily: did fuck up.
[00:41:06] Alison: Ugh, my heart.
[00:41:08] Emily: I know
[00:41:08] Alison: Come on Wilsons, get it together
[00:41:11] Emily: We'll see. So
[00:41:13] Buck & Abby's Date
[00:41:13] Emily: Buck and Abby have a little date
[00:41:14] Alison: Precious.
[00:41:15] Emily: somewhere, a restaurant, 'cause that's what they do
[00:41:18] Alison: Yeah, so that it's not special, so that when one of them has to cancel it doesn't matter
[00:41:21] Emily: It doesn't matter. And Buck asks if Abby's brother Matthew liked him, which was when I was like, " Does Buck's backstory exist yet? Or is Buck an only child at this moment?"
[00:41:33] Alison: Buck's probably an only child at this moment.
[00:41:36] Emily: Which just makes things kind of interesting.
[00:41:39] Alison: Correct.
[00:41:40] Emily: they're like, "I guess I kinda did move in with you. Is that okay?" And Abby's like,
[00:41:45] Alison: emoji? It's fine, I guess.
[00:41:50] Emily: It's fine. She
[00:41:51] Mandy: And I
[00:41:52] Emily: pleased.
[00:41:53] Mandy: Yeah, I do believe she hasn't thought about it. I think that at this point, Buck's presence is, is, like, a [00:42:00] pleasing thing to her, but not at the forefront of her thoughts
[00:42:03] Emily: I think so. I think, you know, he's on 24-hour shifts. comes home, she's like, "Oh, you're off shift. Great."
[00:42:10] Alison: Hey, bud. How you doing?
[00:42:12] Emily: Except then he's also off on 96s sometimes, and wouldn't she just be like, "Oh, you're here.
[00:42:17] Alison: Oh, hey.
[00:42:18] Emily: You're here for three days. Great.
[00:42:20] Alison: Hey.
[00:42:21] Emily: Go home please.
[00:42:23] Alison: What you
[00:42:23] Emily: What are you still doing here?"
[00:42:24] Alison: you doing?
[00:42:25] Emily: and then he says the thing that he will say later, "I got your back," because Evan Buckley is nothing but a phrase repeater
[00:42:31] Alison: Aw.
[00:42:32] Mandy: Yep
[00:42:33] Emily: But then another random woman approaches the table and accuses Buck of the same thing, that they have been DMing for three months. I know. And Buck's like, "No, no, no, this is a big misunderstanding. I don't know you. This is not what this looks like." And that woman throws a drink right in his face And
[00:42:55] Alison: I get it, but also, okay, Los Angeles is a pretty big city, am I right?[00:43:00]
[00:43:00] Emily: yes
[00:43:01] Alison: Pretty big city. If this woman were like texting or DM'ing or messaging or whatever Buck for three months and he disappears,
[00:43:12] Emily: Mm-hmm.
[00:43:13] Alison: how is she gonna find him in the middle of the day at a random ass coffee shop?
[00:43:19] Emily: That I don't, I, I don't think they
[00:43:21] Mandy: Mm-hmm.
[00:43:22] Alison: Like finding them at the 118, like I, I guess I get it.
[00:43:27] Emily: Yeah.
[00:43:27] Alison: like
[00:43:28] Emily: out
[00:43:28] Alison: that together. You can suss that out. But like just at a, at a random ass coffee shop
[00:43:34] Emily: I guess I assume the idea was that she just happened to be there and recognized him from the picture.
[00:43:41] Alison: from the picture.
[00:43:42] Emily: But still,
[00:43:44] Alison: Doesn't work for me, bud
[00:43:45] Emily: for it to be like two in a week when this has allegedly been going on for three months
[00:43:50] Alison: Yeah, that's quite a...
[00:43:52] Emily: Stretch,
[00:43:52] Alison: No,
[00:43:53] Emily: Stretch Armstrong. And Abby,
[00:43:55] Alison: Oh
[00:43:56] Emily: instead of being like, "Whoa, that was weird," is like, "I thought you weren't doing [00:44:00] this anymore."
[00:44:01] Alison: my God,
[00:44:02] Emily: And is immediately against him, which was
[00:44:04] Mandy: It, if I were Abby, I would've assumed the same thing. I mean, Buck very obviously like, d- very notoriously started their relationship by admitting that he had sex with many women. And I feel like this is another side effect of the fact that we only got 10 episodes to see their relationship develop.
[00:44:21] Mandy: Because I watched it and I was like, "Yeah, if I were Abby, I would think the same thing." Like, she hasn't known Buck long enough to know that this is actually like a full turnaround.
[00:44:30] Alison: Yeah. 'Cause we actually haven't seen her invested in the ways that he's been changing.
[00:44:38] Mandy: Yeah.
[00:44:38] Emily: see his conversations with Bobby.
[00:44:41] Mandy: Right.
[00:44:41] Alison: or
[00:44:42] Mandy: Like
[00:44:42] Alison: Hen. Because like I imagine that based on, you know, the fact that they're all fictional, I would
[00:44:48] Emily: What? Hmm.
[00:44:49] Alison: that she kind of has continued to see him the same man that she met at the very beginning.
[00:44:58] Mandy: Yeah
[00:44:59] Alison: Like she [00:45:00] still believes him to be Pilot 1-1 Buck Buckley, when in fact he has gone under a not insignificant change over the last several episodes. But I- she just doesn't, either she doesn't see it or she hasn't seen it or she doesn't care to see it. but I don't think it's on the top of her mind.
[00:45:22] Emily: No,
[00:45:22] Mandy: No
[00:45:23] Emily: to deal with,
[00:45:24] Alison: Yeah.
[00:45:25] Emily: she hasn't been looking for someone else. And she really, because of that, should not have been fucking around with him in the first place, but
[00:45:32] Alison: Not
[00:45:33] Emily: it made her feel better.
[00:45:34] Alison: did,
[00:45:35] Emily: It was
[00:45:36] Alison: begrudge her for
[00:45:36] Emily: doomed from the start. And she does tell him a very devastating line, "I don't feel like I know who you are right now."
[00:45:45] Alison: Aw. Well,
[00:45:47] Mandy: Yeah
[00:45:48] Alison: did you ever?
[00:45:49] Emily: Did you ever though? Does Buck know who he is? He's trying.
[00:45:53] Alison: He is trying.
[00:45:54] Emily: as we've heard through this whole episode, Abby doesn't feel like she knows who she is
[00:45:59] Alison: It just, this whole thing was just really hard to, to [00:46:00] stomach. It was like, 'cause Buck believes he has been trying so hard, and then just to see it completely erased
[00:46:06] Emily: Mm-hmm.
[00:46:10] Alison: firehouse, so Hen and Chim and Bobby don't believe him,
[00:46:15] Emily: Mm-hmm.
[00:46:19] Alison: so I just, I did all this fucking work, and you guys are just not gonna believe me at all. Do you not trust me at all?"
[00:46:25] Emily: Those are the only people he likes
[00:46:27] Mandy: Yeah, they're the only people that he knows and cares for. Like what, what is the timeframe since the season started? Because I think that makes a difference too. If this has been like Buck and Abby have been fooling around for like six months, then yeah, that's a difference.
[00:46:42] Emily: Could say. We,
[00:46:42] Mandy: If it's been like three weeks, then yeah, Buck hasn't really earned the credit yet.
[00:46:47] Emily: We don't know
[00:46:49] Mandy: Yeah
[00:46:50] Alison: Well, no, we do vaguely know because she says that they've been DM-ing for, like, three months. And the other, the first [00:47:00] woman that there was, like, that he was a firefighter, and then there's a third woman, and Chim, think, talks about the, like, the rescue, like the, the, the tru- or the, fuck, the, the rollercoaster rescue.
[00:47:17] Alison: Am I wrong there?
[00:47:18] Emily: That was season one. Mm-hmm.
[00:47:23] Alison: she, the third woman that comes to the firehouse that Chim is like, "No, no, no, I got you," who shows the MySpace profile. I think it's been at least three months is my case.
[00:47:31] Emily: Okay
[00:47:31] Alison: But I, truly I don't know. I don't think it's been three weeks.
[00:47:36] Alison: I imagine that her mom's been sicker for longer than that
[00:47:39] Emily: Well, and yeah. If you, Sometimes the series tries to follow a chronological year, and sometimes it very clearly doesn't they, they had Halloween
[00:47:53] Alison: Right. No, they
[00:47:54] Mandy: that's true
[00:47:54] Alison: they, no,
[00:47:57] Emily: moon. No, they had Valentine's Day, so that was February.[00:48:00]
[00:48:00] Mandy: Oh yeah. Okay
[00:48:01] Emily: And that was in February of the show
[00:48:05] Alison: Yeah, so it's probably been four or five months.
[00:48:08] Emily: 'Cause the pilot aired in
[00:48:10] Alison: Yeah
[00:48:12] Emily: And January, let me look, January 3rd. And then Heartbreaker, which is the Valentine's Day episode, aired February 7th
[00:48:20] Alison: Yeah.
[00:48:21] Mandy: Okay, so maybe like six months start to finish from like the first time they spoke
[00:48:26] Alison: Yeah,
[00:48:26] Mandy: when... And then maybe like three month-- I'm assuming this would've like aired in
[00:48:33] Emily: This aired
[00:48:34] Mandy: or June.
[00:48:35] Emily: Mm-hmm.
[00:48:38] Mandy: Okay.
[00:48:39] Alison: been two and a half months at best
[00:48:42] Mandy: Oh.
[00:48:42] Emily: It...
[00:48:42] Mandy: that's not a long time.
[00:48:43] Emily: if
[00:48:44] Mandy: Yeah
[00:48:45] Emily: That's the problem with "9-1-1" is the time never makes sense. The time, the timeline does ne-
[00:48:51] Alison: real.
[00:48:51] Emily: make sense
[00:48:52] Mandy: But I do think that would change my opinion of like, as I watched it, I was like, "Yeah, I, I get Abby's reaction." Like, I wasn't [00:49:00] fully invested in this anyway, and now maybe you're cheating on me. Like,
[00:49:03] Alison: exactly
[00:49:04] Mandy: eh.
[00:49:05] Emily: Mm-hmm.
[00:49:06] Alison: It's, you know, I got broken up with by somebody who didn't wanna take me seriously, and now you don't either. Like,
[00:49:11] Mandy: Yeah
[00:49:12] Alison: This has been fun. I'm gonna prioritize myself. Okay, bye.
[00:49:14] Emily: Yeah
[00:49:15] Alison: And
[00:49:16] Mandy: So I feel bad for Buck, but I'm also not mad at Abby for that reaction
[00:49:20] Alison: Totally fair.
[00:49:21] Emily: Well,
[00:49:22] Alison: Oh.
[00:49:22] The Motorcycle Crash
[00:49:22] Emily: I don't like motorcycles, but we have Kenny
[00:49:25] Mandy: Yeah
[00:49:26] Alison: my guy.
[00:49:27] Emily: We have a man going shopping for a motorcycle for his 50th birthday, and he knows his wife is gonna hate it, and he wants to impress his son. But he is out motorcycle shopping, he ends up with, the red bike of his dreams. He's dressed in leather and a helmet, cruising down the street. A cute woman in a car waves at him, and then he gets, T-boned by a truck
[00:49:51] Alison: I hope she feels bad about that.
[00:49:53] Mandy: God, seriously.
[00:49:54] Emily: yeah, I who,
[00:49:55] Alison: hope she feels bad about that.
[00:49:57] Emily: who
[00:49:57] Mandy: is just like a horrific scene
[00:49:59] Emily: [00:50:00] It's, this is, I think, the most graphic this show gets.
[00:50:05] Mandy: Okay, I'm kinda glad to hear that
[00:50:08] Emily: What's more...
[00:50:09] Alison: No, no, no. There's definitely one more.
[00:50:11] Emily: What is it?
[00:50:13] Alison: close your ears.
[00:50:14] Mandy: Okay, my ears are closed
[00:50:16] Alison: I'm pretty sure the, emergency from two, four is worse The escalator?
[00:50:20] Emily: I don't... Maybe.
[00:50:23] Alison: Ooh, maybe.
[00:50:24] Emily: Maybe.
[00:50:25] Alison: Maybe, but I don't remember. I just, it also hits me like this, so like
[00:50:29] Emily: This feels worse.
[00:50:31] Alison: This is very
[00:50:32] Emily: Yeah.
[00:50:33] Mandy: Yeah, I was unprepared for this to be so graphic. I was like, "Jesus, are they really showing that? Like, am I really seeing that?"
[00:50:41] Emily: There are full intestines on the ground. So, so the 118 show up, I mean, they're not needed, but... Well, actually only Bobby seems to be here. I guess maybe people were filming A and B teams, I'm not sure. but Athena is already there, and she's like, "Listen, there's not much you can do. This man has been [00:51:00] torn in half." y- they don't linger, but half, his lower half is still draped over the motorcycle with his intestines just spilling out, and then his, his top half is on the ground, like, covered by a blanket, Bobby's, like, his circulatory system is keeping him alive for, like, a couple minutes
[00:51:21] Alison: It's trying.
[00:51:23] Emily: I was trying. and Kenny is, you know, in shock, obviously.
[00:51:27] Alison: Yeah,
[00:51:28] Emily: He is talking, which is probably the worst part.
[00:51:32] Mandy: Yeah
[00:51:33] Emily: And he's like, "Listen, I have to go home. My son is waiting for me." Like- Yeah.
[00:51:38] Alison: can see it in Bobby's face. He's like, "Uh-huh?"
[00:51:42] Emily: Mm-hmm.
[00:51:43] Mandy: Oof.
[00:51:48] Alison: to date
[00:51:49] Emily: and even Athena looks pretty crushed.
[00:51:51] Alison: Yeah.
[00:51:52] Emily: And then his phone rings. Kenny's phone rings. They answer it.
[00:51:56] Alison: Oh God.
[00:51:57] Mandy: Hmm.
[00:51:58] Emily: son because he is late coming [00:52:00] home, and they have a little conversation while he bleeds out on the pavement.
[00:52:05] Alison: Oh God.
[00:52:06] Emily: It sucks
[00:52:07] Alison: Oh
[00:52:08] Mandy: I can't de-
[00:52:08] Alison: this call so much
[00:52:09] Mandy: I can't decide if it's sweet or just gonna, like, fucking traumatize that kid for life
[00:52:14] Emily: I don't
[00:52:15] Mandy: That he was on the phone as his dad died.
[00:52:18] Alison: It's both.
[00:52:19] Emily: Yeah,
[00:52:20] Mandy: Yeah, it's both
[00:52:21] Emily: definitely for the show to be like, "Look how traumatic this is."
[00:52:25] Alison: Yeah. I think if, if I were to be in that zone, in the moment, it would be horribly traumatizing. years on, it would be, like, the sweetest act that anyone's ever done
[00:52:38] Emily: to have like a final thing.
[00:52:40] Alison: To have like that, you know, i- at the end of the world, like this is what you've chosen to do. but yeah, in the moment and in the aftermath and in the processing of the grief, it would just be the worst fucking thing.
[00:52:52] Emily: Especially 'cause it doesn't seem like Ethan knows,
[00:52:55] Alison: No.
[00:52:56] Emily: so it wouldn't be until after the fact. You're like, "Oh, that he was dying."
[00:52:59] Alison: That [00:53:00] was, "And you're dead," yeah
[00:53:01] Emily: Yeah. And Bobby like basically collapses at the scene,
[00:53:05] Alison: Oh yeah,
[00:53:06] Emily: he actually crawls away for a second,
[00:53:08] Alison: Yeah.
[00:53:10] Emily: Oh, Bobert.
[00:53:11] Emily: and has to go sit on the curb, which we've never seen from him
[00:53:14] Alison: No, this is new
[00:53:15] Emily: And he, he has to go sit on the curb.
[00:53:18] Emily: Athena goes to sit with him, and he apologizes for being unprofessional. Sweet, sweet Bobert
[00:53:23] Alison: We bobert.
[00:53:25] Emily: And Athena's like, "Listen, you know, when I'm here in this uniform, I'm on duty. This is me. But when I get home, I am someone completely different," which we've seen.
[00:53:36] Mandy: Yeah.
[00:53:36] Emily: We've seen the handcuffs. But everyone is holding it together. This is the worst day for most of these people. they're gonna remember this for a long time
[00:53:47] Alison: Yeah. So were we
[00:53:48] Emily: So is the audience. she's like, "How can I help you?" And then he asks if she would go somewhere with him.
[00:53:55] Alison: And he,
[00:53:57] Emily: Is already in love with her.
[00:53:59] Alison: he's [00:54:00] already in love with her. He is completely head over heels in love with Athena Grant. Like,
[00:54:03] Mandy: He's like, "Abby who?"
[00:54:04] Emily: Mm-hmm.
[00:54:06] Alison: whomst?
[00:54:06] Mandy: Yeah.
[00:54:07] Emily: Yep
[00:54:07] Alison: It, his whole face is just the softest, squishiest, like, ever. He's, he's immediately just completely besotted. Like, what do you mean she's stepping into it with me? 'Cause this is kind of the, what he told Buck about, you know, wonderful, interesting women often come with pasts. They come with baggage.
[00:54:29] Alison: They come with stuff. and what she needs is for you to step into it with her. And Bobby, who has known Athena for some time and they've worked together for some time knows that she is a deeply wonderful, interesting woman. doesn't, I think, entirely know about her baggage quite yet.
[00:54:47] Emily: Mm-hmm.
[00:54:51] Alison: it with him.
[00:54:52] Emily: Yeah. Yeah
[00:54:54] Alison: And it's just, ugh, it's so wonderful
[00:54:57] Emily: I wonder when they writers were doing [00:55:00] this, if they were writing the episode with the Abby flirting and started writing the ... Someone tapped them on the shoulder and went, "Remember, she's only here for one season."
[00:55:11] Mandy: Yeah
[00:55:11] Emily: Finished writing that episode, and they were like, "Well, we still need a love interest for Bobert. Athena Grant.
[00:55:18] Alison: I see the
[00:55:18] Emily: Put it right in. Next episode,
[00:55:20] Alison: 177L30 responding.
[00:55:21] Emily: Yeah. 'Cause obviously there's enough material with Abby flirting that they could have done it for a long time,
[00:55:27] Alison: Yeah
[00:55:28] Emily: were going to clearly, and then someone had to be like, "Remember, she's not gonna be on the show." And they had to go, "Whoop." But Athena makes sense, so it's like, it's-
[00:55:37] Alison: Athena absolutely makes sense.
[00:55:40] Mandy: it's a good redirection for Bobby and his storyline
[00:55:43] Emily: It's just so funny to be like, "Mm, Abby," and then he's like, "Mm, yeah."
[00:55:47] Alison: Beer.
[00:55:47] Emily: Yeah. 'Cause he doesn't know that she's leaving.
[00:55:49] Alison: No
[00:55:50] Mandy: Yeah
[00:55:51] Alison: just like, "Hmm, Athena." what? That's so real for
[00:55:55] Emily: it is very real for him.
[00:55:56] Alison: That's real and
[00:55:57] Emily: And, you know, we can... Let's stay with them [00:56:00] because I don't wanna l- I, I don't wanna lose them.
[00:56:03] Bobby & Athena at Church
[00:56:03] Emily: Athena goes to church with Bobby, and I was like, "Aren't you guys on shift?" ' Cause they look like they're in uniform still
[00:56:09] Alison: They are in uniform, but they've had a very bad day
[00:56:12] Emily: They have, and, you know, that's fine. And they, they talk about, you know, this is a strange life that they've chosen, but no one on the outside can understand it. which is potentially true. I can't speak to that, but that sounds like a thing a TV show would say. and how this life has changed them, and it's exhausting and fun, and, you know, they
[00:56:34] Mandy: I did have,
[00:56:36] Emily: simpatico
[00:56:36] Mandy: have a moment of, like, looking at them in the church in uniform thinking that this sounds like the setup to a joke with a really corny punchline. Like, a policeman and a fireman walk into a church type of thing.
[00:56:47] Emily: Yep.
[00:56:48] Mandy: So, like, the- them being in uniform definitely stood out to me.
[00:56:52] Emily: I did
[00:56:52] Mandy: But I guess it's to make the impact of the next scene they have a little, little more impactful.
[00:56:57] Emily: Yeah. I did [00:57:00] kind of imagine Father Firework, like, lurking in the corner being like, "But that one was mine."
[00:57:04] Alison: Yeah, nah
[00:57:05] Emily: And it's like I was, I was building him up. He was supposed to be for me. He's straight though, remember? Well, he's celibate. He doesn't say that he's straight, he says he's celibate.
[00:57:14] Alison: He is celibate.
[00:57:15] Emily: Right, right, sure.
[00:57:17] Alison: He is celibate,
[00:57:18] Emily: Right. Well, you'll get there, Mandy.
[00:57:20] Mandy: Okay. I'm intrigued
[00:57:22] Alison: It shouldn't surprise you that Father Firework is celibate
[00:57:26] Emily: Surprises me
[00:57:27] Mandy: Mm-hmm. I feel like, based on the way you're phrasing this, that maybe the scholars have some opinions on that too.
[00:57:34] Alison: The scholars do have some
[00:57:36] Mandy: Yeah
[00:57:36] Alison: There is, in fact, an excellent body of research debating.
[00:57:40] Mandy: Okay. I'm excited to get there
[00:57:41] Emily: Body.
[00:57:42] Alison: it's gonna be fun.
[00:57:43] Emily: So,
[00:57:44] Alison: Shut up
[00:57:45] Emily: so we've got Bobby and Athena getting set up. Good for them. But, but we have to go to a truly iconic line from Buck, because
[00:57:55] The Catfishing Resolution
[00:57:55] Emily: Buck is gonna confront Chimney at the station, and he yells, "AO rebar."
[00:58:00] Alison: Oh, no. Hey, yo, Remar. I love him so much
[00:58:03] Emily: And I, you know, don't forget that man is British.
[00:58:07] Mandy: Yeah.
[00:58:08] Emily: And sometimes
[00:58:08] Alison: British.
[00:58:09] Emily: just... I guess at one of the last conventions, someone asked Oliver to repeat the line
[00:58:15] Alison: Amen.
[00:58:16] Emily: Ayo rebar. And I just try to imagine 10 years later trying to say that with a straight face. So Buck believes that Chimney is the one who's been putting these women up to confronting him, and it does seem like a Chimney thing to do.
[00:58:30] Alison: It does
[00:58:31] Emily: it's not Chimney. Someone has been impersonating Buck on MySpace using his Facebook profile picture, and if that doesn't sound like a line from the early 2000s
[00:58:44] Mandy: It really does. Yeah.
[00:58:47] Emily: it sure
[00:58:48] Mandy: Definitely does
[00:58:50] Emily: S-
[00:58:50] Alison: Facebook profile pic.
[00:58:52] Emily: That Facebook profile pic. Girl. I kind of wanted to see the photo too. Like, what kind of duck lip
[00:58:58] Mandy: Yeah
[00:58:59] Emily: [00:59:00] With that mouth
[00:59:01] Alison: Duck, the duck lips, the guitar in the corner. Like, what kind of Darren Criss
[00:59:06] Emily: Mm-hmm.
[00:59:07] Alison: is this?
[00:59:08] Emily: It can't have been good. Good enough...
[00:59:11] Alison: sunnies.
[00:59:11] Emily: Gosh, I was talking to somebody yesterday who had pink sunnies on their head, and I was like, "I need you to take them off. I can't take you seriously. I can't look at you right now."
[00:59:21] Alison: No, it's just, it's a hug from the universe.
[00:59:24] Emily: A hug or a slap across the face, I can't decide.
[00:59:28] Alison: hug.
[00:59:28] Emily: And
[00:59:29] Mandy: Both
[00:59:30] Emily: I don't even know that they weren't the Pink Sunnies, they were just Pink Sunnies, and I was like, "I can't. It's too much.
[00:59:36] Mandy: Mm-hmm.
[00:59:36] Emily: I can't do it." Maybe they were the Pink Sunnies. I don't know. anyway, so, so yeah, somebody has been catfishing women using Buck's face
[00:59:45] Alison: Yeah.
[00:59:46] Emily: And-
[00:59:47] Alison: falling for
[00:59:47] Emily: Been there.
[00:59:48] Alison: got a beautiful face.
[00:59:49] Emily: beautiful face, and the person doing the typing must be pretty good at talking.
[00:59:56] Alison: Yeah. I'm a Yankees fan who loves Star Wars, the Star Wars [01:00:00] prequels.
[01:00:00] Emily: Right. Of course
[01:00:01] Alison: and of course Chimney has opinions on this.
[01:00:03] Emily: Buck doesn't even know they exist.
[01:00:05] Alison: Not even close. idea
[01:00:07] Emily: so they're gonna And Chimney's like, "We can find their IP address in the thing." Like, no you can't. but they're gonna track this guy down, pretending who's pretending
[01:00:15] Alison: but I
[01:00:16] Emily: to be Buck. And I was like, "You're ab- you're absolutely not." But yeah, like, you, you not gonna do that, but okay. But they do. They, they track the catfish down. Remember, catfishing was very big at this time. There was an MTV
[01:00:30] Alison: about
[01:00:30] Emily: It was a whole thing, so of course it's on "9-1-1." this is the plot line that I thought like, too much for the last episode of the season
[01:00:39] Alison: It was. I would've loved to see like a two-episode arc for
[01:00:43] Emily: exactly. This needed to be more of how it, like, affects Buck's self-esteem or something. But like
[01:00:51] Alison: does it affect his relationship and, you
[01:00:53] Emily: Yeah, like cramming it into the finale when he's also losing Abby. I was like, "This is [01:01:00] so much."
[01:01:00] Alison: a little much,
[01:01:01] Mandy: Mm-hmm.
[01:01:02] Emily: but yeah, they end up at a trailer park. The windows are blacked out with flies ' cause,
[01:01:07] Mandy: Not great
[01:01:08] Emily: he's dead
[01:01:09] Alison: And he's been dead for like 10 days
[01:01:11] Mandy: very dead. And Chimney's a little gross about it. He's like, "He's an online predator, so what?" And Buck's suddenly very protective of this person and feeling very bad about the situation, and, like, this guy hated himself so much that he pretended to be someone else. So he's really taken a heel turn here to be like, f- let's not denigrate him, his memory." It's a compassionate take. I like that. It's very soft-hearted
[01:01:40] Emily: And I feel like we could've learned more about why Buck felt this way.
[01:01:45] Alison: We could have in a two episode, in like a two-parter
[01:01:49] Emily: this dude, like, really fucked up his relationship with Abby,
[01:01:52] Alison: Yeah
[01:01:52] Emily: but now he really feels for him
[01:01:55] Alison: Yeah. He really feels for him and it would be a really cool thing to have been like, [01:02:00] "You've caused me all this grief, but we actually have so much more in common about the ways that we've been trying to reinvent ourselves," et cetera, et cetera
[01:02:09] Emily: And you died before you could do it or in the midst of it, and you could never come out of the cage that you built for yourself, and I'm dismantling the cage that I built for myself as a jockey fuckboy,
[01:02:22] Alison: Yeah,
[01:02:23] Emily: now you've thrown me back into it
[01:02:25] Alison: Yeah.
[01:02:25] Emily: Coulda had it all. However, this man, died in a hot room, and he is now very bloated. Now, I don't understand why people are outside gawking. Like, how did they know there was a guy dead inside?
[01:02:37] Alison: And why would you want a picture of
[01:02:38] Emily: Yeah.
[01:02:39] Mandy: Yeah.
[01:02:40] Emily: that just added another layer that I thought was more TV show than reality. Not that it isn't a TV show
[01:02:48] Alison: I think it's because narratively they had to have a reason
[01:02:53] Emily: To poke him.
[01:02:54] Alison: To poke
[01:02:55] Emily: Yeah.
[01:02:55] Alison: because just the... 'Cause if there was nobody there, then they, it doesn't matter, [01:03:00] you can just cut the house open and who
[01:03:01] Emily: Yeah
[01:03:02] Alison: or do whatever. but because there's an audience and Buck is doing his face turn and really wants to his dignity, that's the coalition that leads to stupid puppy angel baby stabbing this guy in the belly.
[01:03:18] Mandy: Mm-hmm.
[01:03:19] Alison: like with a fucking kitchen
[01:03:20] Emily: Yeah
[01:03:22] Alison: thought he was gonna pop, you stupid
[01:03:24] Emily: You beautiful, dumb baby. And now they have to, they have to drain him like they're getting ready for embalming, and it's, gonna take a while, and there's a lot of... Listen, when a body starts decomposing, which is the moment of death, you have a lot of gas and fluids and bacteria, and you bloat, and it's gross.
[01:03:42] Alison: It's gross
[01:03:43] Emily: just what happens to your body when you die. Listen, it's gonna happen to you. It's gonna happen to me. don't inhale it
[01:03:48] Alison: No, no.
[01:03:50] Emily: yeah, that,
[01:03:50] Alison: I do love how the coroner at this point is like, "This is a body." He doesn't care. Buck is just, like, ready to... He's like a guard dog
[01:03:59] Emily: Yeah, he was [01:04:00] right in his face.
[01:04:00] Alison: defend. Yeah, you're not about to beat up a coroner now, are you, Buck?
[01:04:04] Emily: I was kinda like, "Do it."
[01:04:05] Alison: Do it, do it, do it, do
[01:04:07] Emily: Buck doesn't get to punch enough people
[01:04:08] Alison: He doesn't. It's very sad.
[01:04:10] Emily: It was. I was like, he's a big... And what's funny, and this may not be for Mandy at all because probably doesn't do anything for her, but Buck is small in Season 1,
[01:04:22] Alison: Yeah.
[01:04:23] Emily: still quite big in this trailer. I was imagining Season 9 Buck filling that trailer, and I was
[01:04:30] Mandy: Yeah, I'm not super familiar with season nine Buck,
[01:04:34] Emily: It's like
[01:04:35] Mandy: but this Buck looks big to me, so yeah.
[01:04:38] Emily: No,
[01:04:38] Mandy: Like,
[01:04:39] Emily: this Buck is
[01:04:39] Mandy: he is, yeah
[01:04:41] Alison: this book is small. Like, I would consider very, very, very politely season one book is kind of a twink book
[01:04:48] Mandy: Maybe twink in, in the context of Buck. Definitely not twink in general though.
[01:04:55] Alison: twink, but i- in context of Buck, this is a very, this is [01:05:00] very skinny, this is very little, this is very,
[01:05:04] Emily: Smooth.
[01:05:04] Alison: smooth. as his hair improves yeah, he just, he really fills a space. The shoulders. He grows into his shoulders,
[01:05:13] Emily: He gets big.
[01:05:14] Alison: it's,
[01:05:15] Emily: He becomes, we've talked about this, he becomes a hunk,
[01:05:18] Alison: Yeah.
[01:05:19] Emily: and
[01:05:19] Mandy: Mm-mm.
[01:05:19] Emily: a hunk.
[01:05:20] Alison: He does. He's very hunky,
[01:05:22] Emily: Yeah. But I was just thinking like, "Oh, he would be so big in that trailer in season nine."
[01:05:27] Alison: big in that
[01:05:27] Emily: He would loom over the coroner
[01:05:30] Alison: Like, it's one of those things, like he, y- you look at Chimney and Buck together, and Chim always looks a little small next to Buck. It gets more pronounced as the
[01:05:38] Mandy: Okay
[01:05:38] Emily: Sure does.
[01:05:40] Alison: 'cause Chimney isn't really gonna be bigger,
[01:05:41] Emily: Nope.
[01:05:42] Alison: but Buck does
[01:05:44] Emily: Mm-hmm. Anyway,
[01:05:45] Alison: he's incredibly tasty.
[01:05:46] Emily: he is.
[01:05:47] Alison: They're both so beautiful.
[01:05:49] Alison: It's such a problem for me.
[01:05:50] Emily: Chimney gets his dues in season two, so
[01:05:53] Alison: does. He- and he- eventually he has to pay the, the nips out
[01:05:57] Emily: He does. Chimney will pay the nips out tax, yep.[01:06:00]
[01:06:00] Alison: Chimney will also pay the nips out tax,
[01:06:01] Emily: Now, unfortunately, because of standards and practices, the women never pay the nips out tax
[01:06:06] Mandy: Hi
[01:06:07] Emily: I know.
[01:06:07] Alison: Deep sigh.
[01:06:08] Emily: And in fact, well, okay. I was gonna say they're always in pants too, but that actually doesn't bother me because I hate is when women in TV shows are always wearing like miniskirts and heels when the situation does not... It's Lydia Martin problem, like you are being hunted by creatures, please put on some Converse.
[01:06:26] Mandy: I am currently watching a, show that ended in 2005.
[01:06:30] Emily: Mm.
[01:06:32] Mandy: lawyers. The number of ways they get that main female lead, Catherine Bell, in a bikini,
[01:06:38] Emily: Yep.
[01:06:39] Mandy: I'm like, that is a major in the Marine Corps.
[01:06:43] Emily: Right
[01:06:43] Mandy: You got her, like,
[01:06:45] Alison: And
[01:06:45] Mandy: full bikini.
[01:06:46] Alison: in a bikini.
[01:06:47] Mandy: Yeah. I mean, I'm enjoying it, but I'm also recognizing the inherent sexism as I enjoy it.
[01:06:52] Emily: We, we've talked,
[01:06:53] Alison: can be true.
[01:06:55] Emily: we've talked about this before. It is actually shocking that 911 has not done a beach [01:07:00] day
[01:07:00] Alison: Yes
[01:07:02] Emily: And it's like, not that I want female actors to have to put on a swimsuit for the delight of viewers. Generally, I'm like, "No, keep your fucking clothes on. Damn the patriarchy." It's just the show is set in Los Angeles. They haven't gone to the beach?
[01:07:21] Alison: there's one scene in which one character is hanging out on the beach. Well, there's two, and this particular character likes to hang out on the beach like a sad sack all the time.
[01:07:31] Emily: just moping.
[01:07:32] Alison: but they're just, yeah. It's, Hen was on the beach in season one in like, in the, in the full moon episode, and she was just moping on the sand. yeah. There's a lot of moping on the
[01:07:41] Emily: Right
[01:07:41] Alison: not a lot of like bathing in the
[01:07:44] Emily: What,
[01:07:44] Alison: what I
[01:07:44] Emily: why is there
[01:07:45] Mandy: Yeah
[01:07:46] Emily: a, a beach barbecue day where they just go and hang out and put sunscreen on each other? Like what are we,
[01:07:55] Alison: Play in the waves,
[01:07:56] Emily: are we
[01:07:57] Mandy: Yeah
[01:07:58] Alison: read books. It would [01:08:00] be so much fun. It would be so nice.
[01:08:01] Emily: And then, you know, tits out.
[01:08:04] Alison: And tits out.
[01:08:06] Emily: All around.
[01:08:07] Alison: tax for
[01:08:07] Emily: Nips out tax for everyone. But no. Anyway
[01:08:11] Alison: Sad.
[01:08:12] Emily: So we got Buck and Abby. Speaking of sad.
[01:08:14] The Breakup
[01:08:14] Alison: Does Abby's apartment have a fireplace?
[01:08:16] Emily: we've talked about this before. Her fire is almost always on.
[01:08:20] Alison: Abigail, why
[01:08:21] Mandy: Why?
[01:08:21] Emily: I don't know. It's the middle of whatever month it is. Who
[01:08:26] Mandy: Like I
[01:08:27] Alison: such a flammable location. What are you doing?
[01:08:30] Mandy: I would also imagine she just has to keep the thermostat set on like 50 degrees in order to justify like the fireplace being on in LA
[01:08:37] Alison: Yeah
[01:08:37] Emily: Like maybe for her mom as she's dying, her mom's cold, but
[01:08:42] Mandy: Yeah.
[01:08:43] Emily: She's almost menopausal. Why is her heat on?
[01:08:46] Alison: Yeah. She's already her own
[01:08:48] Emily: She's already heating herself up.
[01:08:49] Alison: no joke.
[01:08:50] Emily: Like, come on. Yeah, I saw that again. I was like, "This is the third time she's had a fire in this fucking apartment. Come on."
[01:08:56] Alison: It's beautiful, I guess, but, like, come on
[01:08:59] Emily: Come on. Not [01:09:00] practical. So is like down on his knees explaining the catfishing situation, and he's like, "You have to believe me." And she does.
[01:09:10] Alison: Please, please believe
[01:09:11] Emily: "Please, please, please, please." And she does, and he's relieved until he sees that she has luggage packed on her bed ready to go
[01:09:18] Alison: Okay,
[01:09:19] Mandy: Yep
[01:09:19] Alison: of all, if you ever have to put your luggage on your bed, do not put the wheels on it.
[01:09:24] Emily: I
[01:09:25] Mandy: Yeah, they gross
[01:09:27] Alison: has been outside.
[01:09:28] Emily: That's, it's like putting your shoes on your bed. That's outside s- that's
[01:09:32] Mandy: Yeah
[01:09:33] Emily: goes on the floor
[01:09:35] Alison: It's outside. I have seen the street. Don't put your wheels
[01:09:39] Emily: I know. That's, that's carpet behavior. That's, that's floor behavior. That, mm-mm. And I'm not even that much of a germ person, but, like, disgusting.
[01:09:48] Alison: So
[01:09:48] Emily: That's city juice on your bed.
[01:09:50] Mandy: Huh.
[01:09:50] Alison: that's City Juice on your bed. Like, no.
[01:09:53] Emily: that's really why they break up. He saw
[01:09:55] Mandy: Yeah.
[01:09:55] Emily: was like, "I can't. I live with frat boys and I can't."
[01:09:58] Alison: I'm sorry, I actually live in a [01:10:00] shoes-free
[01:10:01] Emily: Yeah. Gross. And she's like, "I am going to..." Okay, honestly, this conversation could've been cut in half 'cause she's like, "I'm going to Dublin." "Dublin, Ireland?" "Dublin, Ireland." Like, okay, we know where Dublin is.
[01:10:13] Alison: Dublin, Oregon
[01:10:15] Emily: Ohio. and she's gonna go for a while, some months, six years. Who can say?
[01:10:21] Mandy: Yeah
[01:10:22] Emily: ticket
[01:10:23] Alison: I love that, like, 'cause that's the thing, is that if I were 42 and
[01:10:28] Emily: Hey.
[01:10:29] Alison: died and whatever, whatever, also would like, after finally hooking up with a man half my age, to buy a one-way ticket to Ireland. That sounds
[01:10:39] Emily: sounds delightful.
[01:10:41] Alison: Sounds amazing. I don't begrudge her for her choice.
[01:10:43] Mandy: Yeah
[01:10:44] Emily: on the calendar Yeah. She's gonna, she's gonna do that. She's going for her mom who never got to go. And gonna restate the thesis of the episode. She feels lost. she's been caring for everyone else. She stopped caring for herself and she needs to, eat, pray, [01:11:00] love, live, laugh, love. And, she's gotta go find herself. She does say she cares about Buck, which is nice to hear 'cause we ha- don't think we've heard that before
[01:11:09] Alison: No.
[01:11:10] Emily: Yeah. But he is sad. He's a sad baby.
[01:11:13] Alison: He's so
[01:11:16] Emily: Yeah.
[01:11:16] Mandy: I also would be sad if I had Connie Britton and then she decided to leave to go find herself and didn't invite me.
[01:11:23] Emily: She had to go find herself
[01:11:24] Mandy: Yeah.
[01:11:25] Emily: Horror Story."
[01:11:25] Mandy: Yeah.
[01:11:26] Emily: Is where she had to go. Fucking Ryan Murphy taking our character. Rude
[01:11:31] Alison: He is, but he is trying so hard. He's like, he's recognizing the situation in front of him and is like, "I am not okay, but I know how to pretend to be okay."
[01:11:42] Emily: He does know how to do that.
[01:11:44] Alison: it's
[01:11:44] Mandy: I think
[01:11:45] Alison: am excited for you. I'm just as excited for you as I am sad for
[01:11:48] Emily: Yeah
[01:11:49] Mandy: he recognizes that she is also not okay, and it's not like he has any leverage to, like,
[01:11:55] Alison: Great.
[01:11:55] Mandy: her to stay. That wouldn't be the way to go about it
[01:11:58] Emily: No, he can't [01:12:00] her.
[01:12:00] Alison: But he was really-- it looks as though he was really optimistic that he found a place to belong,
[01:12:05] Emily: I know.
[01:12:06] Alison: that he was wrong
[01:12:07] Emily: And this is why you have to watch season one
[01:12:10] Alison: Exactly. Because every single relationship that Buck will build in the next eight years has to have this
[01:12:19] Emily: Yes. Okay, and I'm gonna bring something up in a second, and I'm gonna buttify it because I want to.
[01:12:25] Alison: Fine.
[01:12:26] Emily: But o- our,
[01:12:27] The Montage
[01:12:29] Emily: our final sequence of the show set over Florence + The, and the Machine's Shake It Off.
[01:12:34] Alison: Yes
[01:12:34] Emily: Shake It Out. Shake It Off. Shake It Out, which we had seen previously in Glee, because this is Ryan Murphy and he can only do so many things. And I did wonder if he was like, "They're doing this episode," and he's like, "I got a great song, you guys. It's already recorded." And like, you couldn't have found something else? Not that it's not...
[01:12:54] Alison: love it.
[01:12:54] Emily: It's not the right context
[01:12:56] Alison: It's not the
[01:12:57] Mandy: No
[01:12:57] Alison: It didn't hit for
[01:12:58] Emily: The organ music is [01:13:00] beautiful. Like the music is nice. The lyrics aren't right. Not yet. I don't know. It's- I think it's because Ryan Murphy has, like, a collection of songs he really likes, and he just,
[01:13:10] Alison: Yeah
[01:13:10] Emily: he just grabs them every time. So Bobby is getting ready for his date. Chimney... This is, like, the first time where I was like, "Okay, maybe Chim could fuck Bobby."
[01:13:20] Alison: Yes, maybe Chim could fuck Bobby.
[01:13:22] Emily: 'Cause he was like, "You are looking handsome." And he fixes his collar for him
[01:13:27] Alison: adjusts his collar, like unbuttons him a
[01:13:29] Emily: and buttons that top button. I was like, "Oh, okay. Maybe I will see it in this one scene."
[01:13:34] Alison: Thank you.
[01:13:35] Emily: You're welcome.
[01:13:35] Mandy: Is that a popular ship or an Allison ship?
[01:13:40] Alison: It's an Alicent
[01:13:41] Mandy: Okay. I can see it
[01:13:43] Alison: yeah, it does-- We do get spikes of it from time to time, but I'm not-- the scholars do not
[01:13:47] Mandy: Okay.
[01:13:48] Emily: No, it's not a popular, it's an Alison.
[01:13:51] Mandy: Okay
[01:13:52] Emily: There's...
[01:13:53] Alison: you're calling me unpopular, Emily?
[01:13:55] Emily: I'm calling you deeply imaginative
[01:13:58] Alison: I'm [01:14:00] happy for you, almost as sad as I am for me
[01:14:02] Emily: I'm not sad for me. I'm very happy for you. I wish I had more ships to play with
[01:14:09] Alison: You do. Chimney and Bobby are right
[01:14:11] Emily: I, Bobby and Athena. I, you, you know how my brain works. I just pick.
[01:14:15] Alison: Chimney, Bobby, Bobby, Athena, Chimney, Bobby, and Athena
[01:14:19] Emily: I don't think Athena's double-dipping. Maybe
[01:14:22] Alison: I think Athena would put Chimney in the cuck
[01:14:25] Emily: Yeah, I was gonna say, I think
[01:14:26] Mandy: Yeah
[01:14:26] Emily: "You sit there and you watch."
[01:14:28] Alison: I think she would put him in the
[01:14:29] Emily: Yeah.
[01:14:29] Alison: I think he would like it.
[01:14:30] Emily: Okay, this is not the tone of this scene
[01:14:32] Alison: is not what you put to the background of, Florence and the
[01:14:35] Emily: No.
[01:14:36] Alison: Shake It
[01:14:36] Emily: No. okay, but there's a line of the voiceover. Or no, no, no, it's not the voiceover. It's Bobby says, "Once you get out of your own way, you start to see everything and everyone in a new light." Now, I would like this line to come back when Buddy goes canon
[01:14:53] Alison: Once you get out of your own
[01:14:54] Emily: Once you get out of your own way. I would like this to be Eddie getting out of his own way.[01:15:00]
[01:15:00] Alison: Yeah, and Chim has to say it,
[01:15:02] Emily: Right.
[01:15:03] Alison: 'cause Chim has to bring it from
[01:15:04] Emily: Yep.
[01:15:04] Alison: It's, you
[01:15:05] Emily: This is
[01:15:05] Alison: Bobby once told me, like-
[01:15:07] Emily: is a 10-year callback.
[01:15:09] Alison: It's a 10-year callback,
[01:15:10] Emily: Now, does anyone remember what people tell them 10 years ago? No, but it's a TV show, so we bring this back.
[01:15:15] Alison: Somebody watched this episode.
[01:15:17] Emily: Somebody re-watch this episode. and then as Bobby's walking off, he throws this little black book into the trash
[01:15:23] Alison: RIP little black
[01:15:24] Emily: Rip. Now imagine there's a garbage man cleaning up and he's like, "What is this?"
[01:15:28] Alison: What is
[01:15:29] Emily: there's like a list of 148 names and he thinks there's a serial killer in the midst.
[01:15:33] Alison: how many names did Bobby actually get to before he threw the book
[01:15:37] Emily: I think he was in like the 50s or 60s.
[01:15:41] Alison: Amazing.
[01:15:41] Emily: He did-
[01:15:42] Alison: actually get to his 148?
[01:15:45] Emily: Well, he's saving babies' lives, so yes.
[01:15:48] Alison: Babies.
[01:15:49] Emily: Babies.
[01:15:50] Alison: Babies. forgot for a minute that babies were people
[01:15:53] Emily: That same.
[01:15:54] Alison: Babies are people.
[01:15:55] Emily: they?
[01:15:55] Alison: are people.
[01:15:56] Emily: Are they? I
[01:15:57] Alison: Babies are
[01:15:58] Emily: mean...
[01:15:59] Alison: [01:16:00] Legally, babies are people.
[01:16:01] Emily: Debatable
[01:16:02] Alison: And well, okay, in Bobby Nash's heart, babies count as lives
[01:16:07] Emily: They do. so, we see Hen and Karen, and Karen comes home.
[01:16:12] Alison: Yay, Karen comes home. Don't make me regret this. Like, yeah, Henrietta, you better work
[01:16:18] Emily: you
[01:16:18] Alison: because
[01:16:19] Mandy: She better not fuck this up.
[01:16:21] Alison: Don't
[01:16:21] Mandy: D- don't fuck this up
[01:16:23] Alison: in. You better apologize. You better correct your behavior because you are married to the most beautiful woman on earth,
[01:16:28] Emily: Mm-hmm.
[01:16:29] Alison: and you love her. Now show it.
[01:16:32] Emily: Yeah.
[01:16:32] Alison: it
[01:16:33] Emily: it. Chim's little montage is that he's got a, like a game night with some, like a lot of people
[01:16:40] Alison: He has so many friends. Where did they all come
[01:16:43] Emily: I, I don't know. one of the catfished girls is there, and then we never see her again, so...
[01:16:50] Alison: No, we don't ever see her again, but they do share a very cute little,
[01:16:55] Emily: Yeah.
[01:16:56] Alison: Beer moment.
[01:16:57] Emily: maybe he
[01:16:57] Mandy: It was cute
[01:16:58] Alison: Yeah, I hope he has a great [01:17:00] night.
[01:17:00] Emily: And then Buck takes Abby to the airport
[01:17:03] Alison: I've been there, my man
[01:17:04] Emily: And they are holding hands standing in front of the glass doors of the airport, and she's like: "You're not coming in?" And he's like: "I learned you never go beyond the glass doors." And there he is setting some boundaries
[01:17:18] Mandy: Good for him,
[01:17:20] Mandy: but sad
[01:17:21] Emily: "You're not leaving anything behind, you're moving towards, and I'm gonna be right here when you come back."
[01:17:26] Mandy: Boy, I can't wait to start season two with their reunion. It's gonna be so good.
[01:17:30] Emily: And I was like- Tell him
[01:17:33] Mandy: Yeah.
[01:17:34] Alison: literally. And that's why I get mad at
[01:17:36] Emily: Me too.
[01:17:36] Alison: scene, is
[01:17:38] Mandy: Yeah
[01:17:38] Alison: knows at this point that she's not coming back to
[01:17:41] Emily: Mm-hmm
[01:17:42] Mandy: I, to play devil's advocate for Abby, I would probably think she planned this all very impulsively, and she isn't actually sure. Like, I feel like between her mom dying, presumably quitting her job, we don't really hear anything about that, but I'm assuming she did, and then, [01:18:00] like, booking a ticket that she's like, "I don't know if this is gonna feel good.
[01:18:03] Mandy: Am I gonna miss my life? Am I gonna miss Buck? Like, maybe I'll be back in a month." Yeah. I don't know, just, like, not wanting to close a door entirely, but it's not really nice to Buck
[01:18:14] Alison: No, I, it's 'cause for me, she's been trying to close this door for episodes now.
[01:18:20] Mandy: Yeah.
[01:18:21] Emily: one f- he's got a foot in there like, "No."
[01:18:23] Mandy: Yeah
[01:18:23] Alison: she has been trying to close this door for several episodes now, about the like, "I'm just, I'm letting you off the hook. I just, you know, you don't need to be here in my mess," and like, you know, "You don't need to be here for this.
[01:18:35] Alison: This was just kind of a fun whatever." And he's the one going like, "No, no, no, no, no. I'm here. I'm solid." And in, for me, I think that she had been planning to just this die.
[01:18:53] Mandy: Probably.
[01:18:54] Alison: this was a thing that she had intended to come back to.
[01:18:56] Mandy: But I-
[01:18:57] Alison: course, yeah, everything happens and she wasn't actively thinking about
[01:18:59] Mandy: [01:19:00] Yeah, I think she just had a lot going on. He was not a priority for her, for sure, and that kinda says a lot, even if she wasn't consciously thinking, "I'm gonna try to break his heart."
[01:19:10] Alison: Yeah.
[01:19:11] Emily: I also think,
[01:19:11] Alison: of the things,
[01:19:12] Emily: yeah
[01:19:13] Alison: was just very, you're
[01:19:14] Mandy: Yeah
[01:19:14] Alison: clearly not a priority for
[01:19:16] Emily: And I think she does not realize because he's not a priority, how much she is a priority to him.
[01:19:22] Mandy: Yes, definitely agree with that
[01:19:24] Emily: they are just not on the same wavelength, and she's not thinking that he's gonna wait. Like, I think she does still have this, like, a little bit of that fuckboy image where she's like, "Okay, I'm
[01:19:37] Mandy: Mm-hmm.
[01:19:37] Emily: He's gonna move on. It's gonna be fine."
[01:19:40] Mandy: I mean, and this is his first serious relationship, so I also kinda don't blame her for thinking that. She was like, "Yeah, I was something different for him, but, like, he's not gonna have a problem getting over me." And it turns out he does, I'm assuming. But
[01:19:53] Alison: Yeah. This very much messes him
[01:19:56] Mandy: Yeah
[01:19:57] Alison: future
[01:19:58] Emily: Yep.
[01:19:59] Alison: This [01:20:00] very much messes him up for the foreseeable future.
[01:20:02] Emily: We love a broken boy
[01:20:04] Alison: Poor guy
[01:20:05] Emily: and there are, you know, no I love yous exchanged. There's a beautiful little shot of the doors closing him. And then,
[01:20:12] Alison: I must, I must be crazy to be leaving you behind. Like,
[01:20:15] Emily: and someone else will take him. Well, not yet
[01:20:18] Alison: love interest out, love
[01:20:21] Emily: Yep.
[01:20:22] Alison: all I'm saying.
[01:20:23] Emily: One out, one in.
[01:20:24] Alison: Mandy, I'm very sorry. We'll get there next,
[01:20:27] Mandy: No, no, that's
[01:20:29] Emily: We will not forget Abigail Clark. She lives on in our hearts and minds and in our Season 1 re-watches
[01:20:35] Alison: And in our season one rewatches
[01:20:37] Emily: And in, I'm going to force, some gift making from Allison.
[01:20:42] Alison: Okay.
[01:20:43] Emily: I think you owe Mandy some Buck Abbey gifts.
[01:20:47] Mandy: Ooh. Or even just Abby. It doesn't have to be Buck Abby.
[01:20:50] Emily: straight
[01:20:50] Mandy: Just Abby.
[01:20:51] Alison: Just some,
[01:20:52] Mandy: Give me a, an Abby's hair gift set.
[01:20:55] Alison: gifts.
[01:20:56] Emily: Yeah, we could do that. Okay, it's on the docket. and then [01:21:00] we end this episode and this season our, I mean, they're not our couple yet, but they will be our A couple, Bobbi and Athena at a very romantic restaurant with Athena looking hot as shit
[01:21:14] Mandy: She looks amazing
[01:21:15] Emily: dress,
[01:21:16] Alison: Oh my God.
[01:21:17] Emily: arms popping, delts looking fly. Gorgeous
[01:21:22] Alison: Those are our parents.
[01:21:24] Emily: and dad u-
[01:21:25] Alison: Those are our
[01:21:25] Emily: united, to be broken.
[01:21:27] Alison: they're the hottest couple in the entire universe. Nothing bad will ever happen to them, ever.
[01:21:33] Emily: Ever, never.
[01:21:35] Alison: Never, ever.
[01:21:36] Emily: Bethena to the rescue.
[01:21:38] Alison: Bathina to the rescue
[01:21:40] Emily: They have arrived
[01:21:41] Mandy: I have to say, I remembered, and maybe this story belongs in, like, the next episode, but I remembered watching the first episode of season two, and there's something about them in a parking lot. But I remember thinking, "Oh, that's weird. They got together between seasons." Like, my brain just [01:22:00] blocked out this whole date thing, even though I did watch season one, and I did remember everything about Buck and Abby, in this episode.
[01:22:05] Mandy: I just like... As I was watching it, I was like, "Wait, they went on a date in, like, season one?"
[01:22:11] Emily: I mean, I can tell you what I remember from what happens from Season 2, Episode 1,
[01:22:16] Mandy: Well, I'm-- Yeah.
[01:22:16] Emily: remember what happens
[01:22:18] Alison: Let me tell you what I don't remember from season two, episode one. Most, by the way, of season two, episode one
[01:22:24] Emily: But yeah.
[01:22:25] Alison: Good times.
[01:22:26] Emily: Well,
[01:22:27] Closing Thoughts
[01:22:27] Emily: this is a long episode, but we did it. This is season
[01:22:30] Mandy: did it
[01:22:30] Emily: of "911: On the Rocks."
[01:22:33] Alison: Mandy, what are your closing thoughts on this season and of your beloved Abigail Clarke?
[01:22:40] Mandy: I'm sad to see her go, and I honestly wish that she had- she came back. Like, I've said before, I've, I've seen, like, the one episode she comes back, or at least the relevant clips on YouTube. But, like, I wish I could've followed her more. I would like to see more of what she does with her life after leaving.
[01:22:57] Mandy: Like, and I definitely, as I was watching, I was like, I see how I [01:23:00] finished the season, and was like, I think I'm done with this show, 'cause none of the other characters as of yet are appealing enough to make me want to watch, like, week to week. Bingeing it is a little differently, or watching it in a podcast with, like, you guys.
[01:23:14] Emily: Mm-hmm.
[01:23:14] Mandy: but the, the week-to-week commitment of having to, like, remember storylines between, like, hiatuses and, you know, season breaks, I'm not attached to any of the other characters as much.
[01:23:27] Emily: It's 'cause
[01:23:27] Mandy: I will say,
[01:23:28] Emily: good, right?
[01:23:29] Mandy: yeah, they, it just can't compete. Buck is also more of a main character than I remembered,
[01:23:34] Emily: Mm.
[01:23:35] Mandy: and I do like him.
[01:23:37] Mandy: But
[01:23:38] Mandy: but yeah, that's kind of... I, I miss Abby already. But I am going into Season 2 with an open mind. and I do like Bobby and Athena a lot
[01:23:47] Emily: Yay.
[01:23:48] Mandy: I, I'm really excited for Bobby and Athena. Like, I'm really excited to get to know Chim a little better. Like, 'cause even by the end of this season, Chimney still really hit his stride. No, I have no opinion on Chimney. I just don't feel like I know anything about him. And Hen, I, I don't [01:24:00] really. I mean, I trust that I will come to like her, but man, she just makes bad decision after bad decision in this season. There's not a, you know...
[01:24:09] Alison: season one Hen is making some
[01:24:11] Emily: Yeah. Mm-hmm
[01:24:12] Mandy: really on her side
[01:24:13] Alison: Yeah. It's... I don't know. Season one is just so specific. The vibes of season one are so specific. The visceral, I don't know if viscerality is a word, but, like, the way that things are so visceral with the calls, with
[01:24:27] Mandy: Yeah
[01:24:28] Alison: of the people die on calls, people are actively grieving, people are messy as hell. Like, people are making good decisions and bad decisions and messy decisions and tricky decisions and, like, it's just, it's such a real... It's just a mess, but it's so intriguing, in a way that it gets a little more clean and shiny in later seasons
[01:24:51] Emily: Yeah. People get a little... They're not perfect, but they get a little spruced up
[01:24:56] Alison: Yeah. They make more net [01:25:00] positive decisions than net neutral decisions
[01:25:02] Mandy: Okay. Yeah
[01:25:04] Emily: Well, Edmundo,
[01:25:06] Alison: Oh,
[01:25:07] Emily: he gets,
[01:25:08] Alison: my beloved.
[01:25:08] Emily: he gets like all the bad decisions
[01:25:10] Alison: He his hardest, okay? He's been dealt kind of a rough hand.
[01:25:14] Emily: He does. But he does, there are like whole seasons where it's just like, "You doing okay, bud?"
[01:25:20] Alison: And the answer is usually
[01:25:21] Emily: Like, "Did you, do you mean to do that?" He's like,
[01:25:24] Alison: You, you doing all right there? Like, no.
[01:25:25] Emily: "Nope." Like, "Why, why you do that?"
[01:25:28] Alison: Grief
[01:25:29] Emily: writing.
[01:25:30] Alison: bad writing,
[01:25:31] Emily: Yeah.
[01:25:31] Mandy: That usually explains it
[01:25:32] Alison: inconsistent
[01:25:34] Emily: And consistent storytelling is a big one.
[01:25:36] Alison: inconsistent characterization.
[01:25:37] Emily: Yeah, that is for sure.
[01:25:39] Alison: But, yes, next episode we're gonna meet our pair of big brown eyes
[01:25:46] Emily: Yep, we got new characters rolling in
[01:25:47] Alison: Yep. we got out and we're gonna roll in some new, some new beloveds that are
[01:25:54] Emily: Some new hair.
[01:25:55] Alison: Some new hair.
[01:25:57] Emily: Listen, you're gonna have new hair to gawk over.[01:26:00]
[01:26:00] Alison: Yeah.
[01:26:00] Mandy: I'm, I'm... don't think anyone's gonna replace Abby's hair in my heart, but I'm, like I said, open mind
[01:26:08] Alison: however, Love Hewitt does have notoriously, famously beautiful
[01:26:16] Emily: I was gonna say, are we gonna
[01:26:18] Mandy: This is true.
[01:26:19] Emily: honestly,
[01:26:20] Alison: has legendarily beautiful boobs.
[01:26:22] Emily: they are legendary and we've been looking at them for like 30 years, so
[01:26:27] Alison: For
[01:26:27] Mandy: Yeah.
[01:26:28] Alison: It does add a little
[01:26:30] Emily: It's a nice kick.
[01:26:31] Alison: Nice kick.
[01:26:32] Emily: Yep.
[01:26:33] Alison: Like, don't get me wrong, phenomenal voice, incredible actor, really, really, really fucking good at her job. Great face. Like, by all reports, a wonderful person. I've never, we've never spoken,
[01:26:43] Emily: each other.
[01:26:44] Alison: like, we do not know each other. I hope she's as lovely as she seems. but also a babe
[01:26:49] Emily: Mm-hmm. And season two is 18 episodes,
[01:26:52] Mandy: Okay.
[01:26:53] Emily: we get
[01:26:53] Mandy: That's good
[01:26:54] Emily: bit more.
[01:26:55] Alison: Yeah.
[01:26:55] Emily: Yep. most seasons are 18 [01:27:00] episodes.
[01:27:00] Alison: they
[01:27:01] Emily: We never get a 20...
[01:27:02] Alison: for
[01:27:02] Emily: Yeah, four is shortened for COVID. but most seasons are 18 episodes
[01:27:07] Alison: Yeah, I think seven is also truncated.
[01:27:09] Emily: Oh, that's right. Yeah, seven is a 10-episode season.
[01:27:12] Alison: is that the writer's
[01:27:13] Mandy: I was about to ask, did the writers strike impact it?
[01:27:16] Emily: Yeah.
[01:27:16] Alison: Yeah, I think that was
[01:27:17] Mandy: Mm.
[01:27:17] Alison: I think that was season
[01:27:18] Emily: Yeah. Yep. We got a little more time to stretch our legs, meet some new people, have some weird fun episodes.
[01:27:25] Emily: We get our first begins.
[01:27:27] Alison: Yeah.
[01:27:28] Emily: Which will be a thing you'll start to learn
[01:27:29] Emily: Yep.
[01:27:30] Alison: in season two
[01:27:31] Emily: And, you know, some disasters.
[01:27:33] Alison: Some actual disasters. We might start with an opening arc, we might
[01:27:37] Mandy: Mm-hmm.
[01:27:38] Alison: some lore. Can't wait to hear your thoughts. I can't wait to see you're like, "Hey, I saw that on
[01:27:45] Emily: Mm-hmm. I know that GIF
[01:27:47] Alison: I know that GIF. You sure do
[01:27:50] Emily: And then you will no longer have missed that on Glee. But that is next time on, 911 on the Rocks. So thank you for listening, and thank you for being with us for our first season, [01:28:00] and we'll catch you guys on, on the next season
